Where is the starter motor on the ST1300

Well it wouldn't start today. I did wash it yesterday, and also this morning was cold. So wondered if something had got wet (never had a problem before thought). But with sudden cold weather I suspected the battery. So, first checked the battery, all OK. F1 light was on so not start kill switch. Fuel ump makes usual noise. Starter make horrible grinding noise - but it always has, though I don't think the engine is firing - not sure if it is turning over.
So I wondered where the starter motor is. just thinking about giving it a little tap with a hammer in case it is stuck.

It's on the back of the engine, about halfway up.

I was able to get to the starter and remove it, but still cannot instal the new one. Any recommendations?

Why and what are you trying to do with the starter?

What are you having trouble with?
It will help if you have some good quality 1/4 inch ratchets, swivel sockets, and a mirror or bore scope.
Do you have the service manual?
