Avon 3D XM - 14,000 mile report

Hi All, I'm running Avon 3D XM's on my '95 ST1100. I've been very happy with them wet or dry. The bike just passed the 80,000 mile mark yesterday so I looked up when I put the tires on. They will have 14,000 miles on them on my next tank of gas and so far the rear tire does not show a flattened strip around it. At this rate I think I *might* be able to get 20,000 miles from these.

Thanks guys, I have a new rear tire I bought this summer but haven't mounted yet, after I plugged the rear from a puncture. The old rear is still holding strong, so I haven't swapped it out yet. I'll send along a comparison of the new vs old in a side-by-side comparison. I try to keep them at 42psi.

Here's a photo which is a closeup of the old and new tires for comparison. I just noticed I have a cut in the tread on the old one, so I need to go take a look at that. In the largest grooves I can see a difference in tread height, but I think I still have plenty on the old. And I checked the Avon website, these tires are rated with 15,000 mile warranties with professional installation and 1mm is the minimum tread depth, but they don't recommend going that far.

I just ordered a set of these. Your image of the tire at 14,000 miles (about 22,500 km) vs. new is amazing. I've used the reiniforced 160/70 Storm in the past and it was a good tire. All give these a shot as I'm only getting about 10,000 km on my Bridgestone T30 Evo's.

I'm running a Avon cobra 190/60 r17 on the rear. 6k on the tire and it still gooks great. At 6k my T30 was at the end of its life. Avon claims the Cobra to last 15k. Go AVON

Due so injuries from Afghanistan, I haven't been on my 2006 ST1300 ABS for 5 years. I need new tires and want to go with the Avon 3d XMs. My knowledge base has decreasesed, so I'm asking for very specific info. Honda specs put my front tire at 120/70 ZR-18 and the rear at 170/60 ZR-18. Why is it so hard to find the 3D XMs in those sizes? Or am I doing it wrong? Help?

I have gotten 15,000 miles on rear and 19,000 on fronts of the Avon 3D XMs. I will shortly be switching to their replacements - the Spirit STs, and hope to get similar mileage.

Are these the sizes you go with? front tire at 120/70 ZR-18 and the rear at 170/60 ZR-18

Be sure you are comparing 1100's to 1100's and 1300's to 1300's.

Looks like Straymond is on an 1100. TexasRain is riding a 1300.

The correct sizes for an 1100 are 120/70-18 front and 160/70-17 rear. Not sure what the 1300 size tires are. Guys run various sizes differing from Honda for many reasons.

120/70-18 may work, but it's not the correct ST1100 stock size. (110/80/18)

Ray, are you using that 120/70-18 Avon? Without any problem.

Welcome to the forum.
Good luck with your tire search.

I'm running Avon 3D Storms and they feel good after the BT023s I took off. But, I need to change over the rear soon to fix a leak from a corroded rim.....

I'm at @ 9000 miles and just reached the center wear bars on the rear. Left side rear wear is more than the right (into wear bars). Over all been a really good performing tire. Good traction on wet roads. Hope the replacement Spirit ST's are just as good.

Dan:

Thanks very much for posting that report. I've been using Metzelers on my ST 1100 for years, I like the tires but they just don't last very long.

Based on your report, I will buy Avons next time I need a set of tires.

Michael
