Question re: Anti-Fogging my visor.
Any decent products that prevent the dreaded visor fogging?

I have a Shoei RF1000 with a breath & chin guard but it still fogs up on cold mornings. I have been riding with it just barely open to keep it somewhat clear but I need to sit up into the windstream to get air movement through.

I have checked the Shoei site without any success, as well as searching this forum. Closest mention was about a different brand helmet with antifog shields.
I have come across some wipe on products a few times, but have no idea if this stuff is snake oil or not.

Been riding with clear safety glasses to keep the cold wind out of my eyes!

Pinloc (pinlock?) visors are by far the very best antifog system I've found. The whole of the single glazed area of the visor can be fogged solid, but the double glazed pinloc area stays crystal clear. I believe these were a Shoei invention and it came standard with my Raid II. I know you can buy after market kits too. Just a couple of small holes in your visor to put the pins in, then slip in the insert and away you go.

In fact without such a system your chin guard is probably adding to your fogging problem. Fogged visors clear better with air circulation.

Thank you both for the very fast reply.

Burger, I can see where using the chin guard might be some of my trouble. I started using the full face helmet last year after using an open face with a full shield. It never fogged over most likely due to all the air movement. Thanks for the mention of the Shoei product. Never ran across that before and I see it's available at NewEnough.

Blfrl, your reply was short but very helpful. Thanks. I'll check this crap out.

Hi Trekker!

We have the same exact helmet, and nearly the same commute too! :) Last year I bought a Foggy Breath Guard (http://www.helmetharbor.com/gear/respro/foggy_opening.htm) and am very happy with how it works. Inexpensive. Effective. Practical. Can't beat it.

Another product similar to Cat Crap is Zook. I have the spray bottle and it is quick and easy to apply. The duration is short, 1 day or less for the spray, but the results are acceptable. I also had a fog city shield insert for awhile but, did not like the need for one for each shield...

Pinlock is the best option. You can get them for Shoei helmets now in the US and Canada and they may add other helmet brands soon. The do it yourself kit is available in Europe for most helmets. Burger how much does the kit sell for there? My wife wants one for her Quantum 2 helmet

+1 on the Pinloc System

I have ridden with the Nolan X-Lite helemts for years, and the internal Pinloc system is brilliant.

I can sit at traffic lights in the pouring rain with my visor down. The only area that mists is the outer edges of the internal visor, which is the Pinloc, the area of vision in front of me is mist free.

There are other choices such as the Foggy System which is a piece of thin plastic of some sort that you actually glue inside of the visor. I am told this works until the glue wears off and then the insert begins to unwind across the inside of the visor. Not a good thing to happen when travelling at speed!

If you are in the market for a new safety helmet, then take a look at the Pinloc system helmets, I will definitly recommend them to anyone and everyone.

I have tried different spray stuff over th years and in my opinion it was just a waist of time and money, all of the stuff ended in the bin. The Pinloc will take some beating and I dont care what anyone tells me, my opinion, but I have used it and still am using it.

The cheapest and most plentiful anti fog I've used is dish washing liquid. Just smear a little on the inside of the visor and wipe off the excess and no more fog.

You won't be disappointed, I'm sure of it. Assuming this is a DIY kit and you're going to drill your visor, just make sure you position the pins to get a good seal between the visor and the insert.

Beats me why anyone is still talking about smearing stuff on their visors :D

Not a DIY kit. I purchased both the parts that make up the system. The new clear visor already has the pins installed, and the Pinlock shield attaches to that. The Pinlock shield is available in different tints, while the main shield is clear. Makes for an adaptable system.

Unless I'm mistaken, the DIY pinlock kits are for any visor on any helmet... the kits come with a drill, two pins and the insert. I'll have a check on the web, but I'm pretty sure that's meant to be the case.

Rob, didn't see anything there for Scorpion. PinLock is the product name so some googling should get you your answers.

OK, the answer is YES :D The European Pinlock site lists a universal kit for all helmets not specifically listed. This (http://www.pinlock.com/3steps.asp) will take you to a page... just select 'other' as the helmet make and you'll see what I mean.

I suggest you drop an email to thevisorshop@crossan.co.uk who are main dealers for Pinlock in the UK. They ship internationally and I'm sure they'll be able to help you.

I don't know about other's experience but I have a Scorpion 700 helmet, well two, same graphics but different colors, and the anti-fog shields supplied with them work very well. It never fogs in high humidity or in rain. Scorpion says the coatings should last about two years in normal use.

Latest review- I received the Shoei Pinlock shield & insert last Friday. It is not a kit to add the pins to my existing shield, but a full shield with the pins installed made just for my Shoei RF-1000 helmet. The Pinlock antifog insert just fits into the pins and seals against the inside of the shield. These are Shoei products.

Rode to work this morning in a light rain & temp around 45 degrees F. Perfect conditions for fogging my visor.

Results- This thing works!!! Absolutely, without a doubt, a fantastic product! And easy to replace the insert if I ever need to. I love it. Highly recommended for safety & comfort. Safe because I can see. Comfort because I can ride in cold weather with the visor down (no more cold wind on my eyeballs). And I would bet the kit to retrofit other brand shields is fairly easy to install. It would only be two holes for the pins.

My rating: 5 out of 5 smilies :D :D :D :D :D

Fogging drives me crazy.

Question - I have two regular shields now, one clear and one dark (smoke). I carry them both with me and swap between them depending on whether I'm riding in day or night (don't like sun glasses).

Is it easy to swap the Shoei RF-1000 insert between a clear and dark one? That way I could get one shield with pins and two inserts (one clear and one dark). Or would it be better to get two complete sets, one with clear shield/clear insert and one with clear shield/smoke insert and swap the entire set?

There is an alternative to the pinlock system, although I haven't tried it as I have pinlock already. It's the same principal though so I can't imagine it doesn't work. These are stick on inserts made by Fog City and I've just seen that they now make a photochromatic one which might save you even having to switch visors.

I use a clear visor with the pinloc system, and I have two inserts. It is easier to change the inserts than the visor, and cheaper of course.

When carrying the spare insert, I just make sure it is on some sort of protective cover to stop scratching. Just takes a few seconds to change them over. I would go for the two inserts.

I carry my spare shield in a felt sleeve from RideGear, the insert is smaller so it would fit so I don't scratch it up.

Test drove the pinlock system this morning - agree with you guys, this is great stuff. This is the first time I have been able to ride in the morning with the visor completely closed. The "unprotected" edge around the outside of the shield fogged a bit, which I expected, but the protected area where the insert covered was CRYSTAL clear. I even purposely tried making it fog up, but couldn't.

I must be missing the "trick" though, how are you changing the insert without removing the visor? You have to lay the visor nearly flat to put the insert in, and you can't do that with the visor mounted. Still seems easier to me to swap out the visor/insert combination if you want switch between a dark and clear insert.

Either way, this is the solution for me. Thanks for the recommendations. :bow1:

How well does this work while wearing glasses? Having to wear glasses all the time has been a pain in the a$$ anyway, and with a helmet it gets no easier.
My sunglasses are prescription and have cable ears, so I can't wear them with my helmet (can't get 'em on). I have a dark visor instead.
Is there room inside for glasses with the pinlock installed?

John, I agree. It it easier to just swap out the entire visor and to leave the pinlock insert in place. Those things are not as scratch resistant as the shield so leaving it attached keeps it a little more protected.

I'm thinking of getting a tinted or reflective shield for daytime use and to use the pinlock antifog setup for mornings, rain & night.

The pinlock insert is an extra shield mounted on the inside of the existing shield. It is thin (approx. 1/16" thick) but doesn't protrude in any noticable distance.

Regards,

I just bought the Fog City insert last week and it works! With the visor down you can breathe all you want and the insert will not fog, although the outer portion of your visor will. I got to test mine in the rain the other day and it works fantastic. FWIW, the FG is an adhesive insert. Once you put it on it's not going anywhere. I know some are leary of the glue type but this one seems strong, very strong
