I just finished the spring oil & filter change. When I pushed on the filter socket I was quite surprised to find it loose. I thought the socket might be too larger, but no, the filter was loose. Not sure if it was not torqued down on previous oil change (bought the bike last fall), or the filter got loose by vibration. Anyway, I was lucky, might have been a big bad problem if the filter turned another 1/4 turn it would have squirted oil on the back tire. So, it may be worth checking your filter once and a while to be sure it is still tight.

This is one reason why I do 90% of my own work. It is easy to think the filter is tight especially if you don't lightly lube the o-ring. It feels tight when that dry ring is rubbing, but it is not. There is a Honda torque spec but even if it was torqued to the spec, and it was dry, it would not be tight.

I usually lube the o-ring, screw on the partially filled filter until hand tight. After that I try and turn it another 1/2 turn. This is my tried and true method over the years. I have heard of many other "sequences" and have this one works for me. I have not had a filter loosen up in over 47,000 miles on the ST and over 150,000 miles on my Buells.
