How many ST owners have added a trunk?

I don't think I ever will. I thought about the smuggler....but just can't justify the expense. As for a top box, again, to me it's an expensive farkle and not having it forces me to pack light.

So far, I've been ok without it.

I ride 2-up 50% of the time. It serves as a backrest for the SO and also holds lots of stuff she brings along :D You know how that goes. I rarely take it off even when riding solo. IMHO the Givi is a good lower priced alternative to the Honda trunk. Considering the Pirates Lair Backrest alone will set you back $325. My 2 cents.

Day trips, no top case.
Overnight or longer, top case.
(8 day trip depicted in my avatar; top case in use.)

I use it for two things:
1) When my wife comes along (I added a small Corbin backrest to it). She says it makes her feel more secure.
2) When I'm doing multiday trips to carry all the stuff.

I really like having one for that, but don't have it on most of the time because most of my rides are shorter solo rides.

Add me to the "two up only" group. Maybe 10% of my miles.

Relatively new owner (March of this year). Waiting to see if need Heli risers and/or a replacement seat before I spend the bucks on a top box. I rarely have a passenger, so I am not pressed for time to get any type of backrest. On trips I suspect I can get as much if not more in a duffel bag that straddles the back seat and luggage rack.

However, the top box would be nice to hold my jacket and or helmet when stopping to eat somewhere, and I could use a smaller duffle bag on the back seat that would double as a backrest for me. Will probably get one in a year or two. When I do I anticipate leaving it on all of the time. But since you don't have a category for: Don't have one, may in the future, and will probably leave it on......I didn't vote.

I use the Givi v46 every time I take the bike out. Mainly for storing the helmet when I get to work or at stops.

My notebook PC case fits perfectly in the Givi box, and then I can drop the helmet in there when I get to work. Makes commuting easy. I only take it off if I'm going for a short ride locally.

I only put the trunk on for long trips. The bike just looks so much better without it.

Thought about buying one, my wife only rides occaisionally couldn't bring myself to spend the cash. I ordered a TCT rack with 6" rail instead of the 3" and will fabricate a pad for it that is removable when she does ride.

I am an old boy scout. The trunk is on 100% of the time and it allows me to carry the items I would need in just about any situation. I use the bags as well. I have a waterproof Cabela's duffel (Thanks Joe) I take along as well on trips.

I can't live with out it AND it is on for day-to-day riding.

The Hondaline box was the very first farkle I ordered for the bike. First and foremost it was as a backrest for the wife but the convenience of having things "right there" instead of tumbling out of the saddlebags makes the trunk indespensible.

I use mine occasionally - longer trips and when Diane joins me. It's the same "Give Me Monkey" E460 box I was using on my 1100. I tend to use it more often with the 1300 than I did with the 1100 mostly because my company issue laptop doesn't fit into the 1300's bags as easily as it did into the 11's. The 13 has longer narrower (shorter top to bottom) bags.

Have a 91 ST, use my Givi E 46 on all my various bikes but only use it on the ST when I expect to carry some articles I leave home without.

I prefer my rack (aka The Cookie Sheet), mostly because I have a stealth back rest for the wife. But being able to attach large payloads on the cookie sheet makes a huge difference in the versatility of hauling junk. I plan on making some modifications (different attachments for basic needs). So hopefully I'll have a camping attachment, music attachment, dry goods attachment, and grocery attachment.

While I enjoy packing "efficiently", it's nice to be a little more spontaneous and have the room to accomodate that spontanaety.

There wasn't a choice for "Only on trips" I have a Givi E-55 and use it on over night trips since I all I have to do is push a button and carry it into the motel like a suitcase. In town I rarely have it on.

I added the Honda trunk primarily as a backrest for my wife, who rides with me over 75% of the time. As others have stated, it makes her feel more secure. I assumed that it would be handy to store stuff on long rides as well. I've only had the bike about 6 months and have only managed to get in about 2K miles so far. Last weekend I went on a 325 mile ride solo and noticed about a 4 - 5 MPG increase in my mileage and wonder if it was because I left the box home.

I'm planning a ride to the Grand Canyon with her in about a month, so I'm going to do a test run with the all the bags loaded one of these days, so I can see how I do with the extra weight. Being inseam challanged my footing is not as secure as I'd like it to be. I'll probably limit or only place light items.

One final point is that the Honda top box looks awesome on the bike!

I use it much more than the side bags. For day-to-day riding, I could probably get along without the side bags much easier than the topbox.

I purchased the Honda Top Box a year ago and I use daily. For me, it seems easier to access than the side bags. It also makes my wife feel more secure when she's riding with me compared to the corbin back rest that I purchased to match the corbin seat. On long trips, I can pack the kitchen sink!

The biggest plus is that it looks great and matches the bike perfectly.

Use my Givi V46 for vacations and/or when riding a passenger for a long trip. Other than that, it stays off.

I have a Givi E-52 and a Pirate's Lair back rest. Depends on the trip which gets used. For most of my everyday riding and day trips with the misses, we use the Pirate's Lair with different T-Bags, duffle or nothing at all. When using the Pirate's Lair with the Givi top box mount, you end up with a large base for soft bags. The Givi is great for the overnights and bad weather, we like the one button and take it to the room convience.

I have been trying to find out where I can get a Hondaline Top BOX??

I am not all that fond of the look of a Givi

Bacon
05-13-2006, 12:13 PM
to be honest, for the price we pay for the box, the quality just isn't up to it in my opinion. I did ask the question of the group but had very few replies so I'm perhaps in the minority. I will use it when I travel far or with a pillion but otherwise it will be in a box in my garage. To add insult to injury, it doesn't even sit 'Square' on my bike. No big deal but it's nothing special for the price.

I find the trunk much easier to deal with for day-to-day activities. I find it easier to put items "in" rather than fight with the side cases & have stuff falling out.

If I really got to use my bike as a ST then I would use it more often. For day trips and around town I leave it at home.

i put the trunk on and will never take it off. Need it to put a laptop in for my commute. I notice the pic of the guy with his knee on the ground a few posts up has a trunk and it doesnt seem to be slowing him down

Really don't much care for them. Will be doing a two week ride this summer and while tempted to add one to the new ST have decided to try and manage with a soft tail bag instead.

DannyC, I wonder if you'd like a top case better if they came in Holstein Cow?

I use mine for overnight trips, leave it home otherwise. This answer wasn't a poll option.

I leave it on all the time. I have the lights hooked up as extra brake lights and use a Tailblazer. These are right at the cagers' eye level and it has become a very effective "Back Off" light.
Also, 2 helmets fit in the Givi. For packing, packing light is very hard for us. Packing light used to mean not folding the rear seat down in the Jeep for more luggage space.
Cheers,
Cliff.

I put my trunk on when I will have passengers and / or if I am going to be carrying more things than the side bags will hold. It is very convient to have a different key for opening and works great as a backrest with passengers on board. I would say it is on about 50/50.
