does anyone know why you couldn't use the 160/60 on the rear instead of the 160/70?? what difference would it make? is it safe?

No reason at all. The better fit would be the 170/60 (160/70 stock size) instead of the 160/60. I have run that size in a Z6 for over a year with no issues (because the 160/70 wasn't available until just recently).

The STOCK 160/70 is 25.819" tall
The 170/60 is 25.031" tall
The 160/60 is 24.559" tall

When you divide the tire height by 2 (remember, half is below the axle and half is above the axle) you get the value of ride height the different tire size will give or take away. In this case:

The 170/60 will lower the ride height by .394" (just over 3/8")
The 160/60 will lower the ride height by .630" (just over 5/8")

The 170/60 is just a tick wider tire and there is plenty of room for width - the width difference is so small it is not even a concern. The height on the 170/60 is closest to stock, so the RPM's will raise a little (maybe 100-200rpm) and you may notice a touch difference in getting the bike on the centerstand.

The 160/60 with it's .630" lower ride height will require more effort to get the bike on the centerstand and you will notice increase in RPM's over the stock size.
