View Full Version : Undergarments - Whats most comfortable?

I'm doing my first long ride since acquiring my ST. I'm most interested in learning what others think is the most comfortable thing to where under their riding pants. I have some First Gear pants that I love but am concerned about the comfort over a 400 mile trip. Do any of you wear biking shorts or padded shorts of some sort. My expectations are that the weather will be warm and so shorts of some sort will be appropriate.

For longer rides I use the LD riding shorts from this company. http://ldcomfort.com/ Can't say enough good about them. Took a little getting used to, was not used to snug fitting "under garments" but now I don't ride without them.

This was a big topic over on the MTF Forum ( http://forums.delphiforums.com/MCTourer/start ) awhile back and most swore by the Long distance Comfort Shorts http://www.ldcomfort.com/ bicycle shorts probably came in 2nd place. Unfortunatley for me I am a big guy and can't find a set to fit. I use a pair of Swim Trunks with the netting cut out and that seems to work ok.

Basically look for something that isn't seamed across your butt and gives your boys some breathing room :D

+1 on the LD comfort shorts. They are a little pricey but well worth it.

check out underarmour the stuff works really good. Snug fit but not to tight on the important parts and doesn't seem to bunch up or twist when riding ang great for every day

Underarmour all the way around. No matter what the temp I wear the long sleeve loose fitting shirts and the hot weather leggings. The long sleeves and leggings helps keep the sweat off my stitch. The Stitch slides over this materal so it nevers binds. It is easy to wash in the sink while on the road and it dries fast.

These are what I wear under riding pants. The boxers are not as good as the longs due to seams across the butt.....the longs have no seams. I called and asked thm why they didn't make the boxers the same way and they told me they have a version coming out in about a month called the bikerboxer that is cut the same as the longs.

Serious

I use long cut off sweat pants. Not very pretty, but I can go long in them. As Yogi said, no seams on the butt, room for the boys.

The KLR guys swear by Underarmour. I haven't tried it, I probably will for this summer...for a mere 4-500 miler, I wear the everyday FOL knit boxers.

I agree with Charlie but would add that you need something that doesn't cramp the huevos. The LD shorts can be tight on the thighs as well - get them big.

BTW - jest = funny (gist maybe?)

+1 for the Underarmour. I can vouch for the washing too - last year at BearSTOC, Jeff and I were doing laundry. His Underarmour gear was dry before my cotton stuff was even warm!

Good for long distance? 27 hours straight so far, no monkey butt.

Walmart has a generic version of the UA gear, about 1/3rd the price.

Just picked up a short sleeve shirt and underwear. Not sure how they'll work out. Plan to check composition against the real stuff.

I went ahead and purchased both items, the under armor and the LD shorts. The LD looks a lot like the underarmor stuff.

Which is better between these two.? I know its subjective but thought I would ask.

Thanks for your help..I am in quest of the perfect bike, as always!

I use New Balance 'Spandex' tights under First Gear summer pants. The New Balance has the same material as UnderArmour, but about 1/2 price - try Academy sports stores. Also have the bicycle shorts with padding, problem with them is my sweaty knees stick to the pants. WalMart sell a cool gear shirt (Spandex) called Starter for $10-15, could not tell difference between UnderArmour's long sleeved shirt.

I wear Under Armour shorts (both compression type and boxers depending on how I feel) and UA shirts in the Loose Gear flavor. I have also picked up a few of the Starter (I think) brand quick-dry shirts at Walmart and have been happy with their performance - and they were only like $7.

I also wear Columbia quick-dry convertable pants under my Cycleport pants - talk about comfy :D . As an added bonus, it lightens the packing because they can be used as shorts & pants. Wash them in the sink and hang them on the shower rod to dry over night and you are good to go. Here is a link to the pants - not the exact model, but very much like them http://www.campmor.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=39199912&memberId=12500226 I got mine at Dick's Sporting Goods.

Also, try the Sidi Monza socks http://www.newenough.com/sidi_coolmax_monza_socks_page.htm - these are the GREATEST socks I have ever worn on a motorycle. The keep your feet cool and dry and don't slip down your calf - ever. I have 3 pair that are over 2 years old and they still don't slip down - at all. :bow1:

These are really expensive but they are really great because the Outlast fabric really does provide hi-tech climate control. They're warm when it's cold out and they're cooler in the summer. Don't know how it works but it does. I've worn these under riding gear in temps ranging from 30° to 120° and been comfortable.

I'm still laughing at the "Manties"...oh, geez, it's hard to type when I'm shaking uncontrollably.

Personally, I used yarn and old beer cans to stitch together a pair of briefs that allow air to move around, and provide a degree of protection against road-rash.

I have all three, UA, LD and Walmart:o: I like the LD best, it stays more comfortable for a longer time, it is thicker than the others, and it doesn't slide around like the others do. I may even get their longer version.

$20 each vs. $60 each (Rokka's) is a steal and the temp regulation really does work!

I've learned years ago to avoid seams. I've been using LD shorts and plan to introduce my wife to them this summer for a southern jaunt. Hey, we live nearby! Wanna play when it loses this 30" of snow? jim

Wal-mart has reasonable clones of much of this stuff. I really like the New Balance long running tights (?) to keep warm in cold weather. A good seat on the bike with no seams across your bottom will go a long way, too; and, I like my beads, since they keep any pressure points from building up.

I wear Pearl Izumi bicycle shorts. If they can make a bicycle seat feel ok, think at what they do for the stock ST seat. Pricey, but worth the money on my cross country rides. Thick, soft padding, chamios style, made of the best materials. Buy them at bicycle shops.
