OK... that's the known world in 1004 AD. Had to go to St. Anthony area of Newfoundland for a couple of days - work related. First longish trip, 560 km
(350 miles) from home - talk about that elsewhere, but this is at Lanse-aux-Meadows (or on the way) where the Vikings made the first and only varifiable settlement in the New World between 1000-04 AD +/- a few years. There's also a few pics with icebergs in the distance - quite a distance - had a good weekend - trip back was mostly in rain - but still fine.

Nice photos. Cool to see an iceberg without an accompanying image of the Titanic for a change.

Seeing an iceberg when it's 113 here in the shade....ahhhhh, very cool.

Newfies can jump in, but here's my take on this ....
"Very cool...I want to move there perhaps!! "
are you sure ??? ... you hafta learn a new language :)
"Can a guy make a decent living there? "
not judging by the numbers of expatriate Newfies in Alberta and B.C !
"How are the housing prices?"
... as per the above ... DIRT CHEAP !
:D :D :D
Lord Jesus boy, she be some nice looking ride.

10486Newfoundland is full of contradictions. There is a lack of traditional jobs in the fishery, lumbering, papermaking, the trades... but there are lots of other opportunities. I'm a C.F.A. - Come-From-Away who's been teaching at a small College for the past ten years. There are lots of mainlanders (and Statesiders) who have come here "for a few years" and are still here many years later. A lot of people have to leave to get experiance or apprenticeship jobs - but they all try to come back. Gas high - many food stuffs high - except I pay $4.50-$5.00 per pound of lobster right off the boat, 20 min. after it was hauled from the trap. Housing is much cheaper than on the mainland, although a lot of houses are going to tourists looking for "summer places".
Roads - I'll do a report - traffic - well, there's not much. Everytime I come to the mainland, I am amazed by traffic. Get my Toronto/Montreal fix every couple of years and it just makes me want to hightail it back here. Scenery is second to none - I live between ocean and mountians. I count on May 1 to mid-Oct. as bike time, although I got out April 11 this year and last year rode til Nov. 1 and then got one day, Dec. 1 in.
Logging off to go into rehearsals for Dinner Theatre - my summer "job". Oh, this picture is my view from my "back bridge", i.e. deck.

Sounds nice. I want to leave California when I retire but not sure I want to go that far. Beautiful country if the rest looks like your pictures.

Jim, I'm one of those. Came under a 2 year contract and 20 years later...:-D
Good Pics and looks like you avoided the rain in Lanse-aux-Meadows.
FYI, the TransCanada Hwy out our way is getting resurfaced to take care of the tire grooves. You'll find some good roads coming here.

thanks for the story, Jim !
was not aware of many people moving there, because, like I said, the numbers of Newfoundlanders and other maritimers in BC and AB is truly staggering ... but as you say, the economy has changed.
now for my story ... in the early 80's BC was a tough job market so I headed 'up north' for work (came back to BC 2 years later). While up there, met literally hundreds of newfies and have to say, friendly folk who KNOW HOW THROW A HOUSE PARTY, EH ??? ... yes and flown in lobster too, and PEI potatoes to go with :)

Horst, t'anks much fer invitin' us Newfies to jump in, 'cas yer right, ya knows, 'bout some tings but maybe don't know 'bout udder tings, so maybe I can help ya with some stuff. Da arse surely was out of er fer a time, folks packin up, movin on, but dem mainlainders, ya see, dey finds oil and fore ya knows wats 'appening, wallets open hup, and tings get good agin. Ders word a maybe haf ov Canada's conventional oil is now comin from da Rock (now, course we ain considrin 'at tar sand stuff out your way). An dat's from jus t'ree ov doze offshore platforms. Long may yer big jib draw, dey says, cuz now we gots lots ov engineers 'n oil people 'n IT guys all over da place. And ya knows dey just keeps findin more of 'at oil. And dat's good, right? Well, maybe he says, caz I 'ear lately dat some folk's furder sout tinks our county's an 'aven fer terrorists, er some such nonsense. Well lord suf'rin jesus, next ting ya know dis Bush feller's gonna start convincin folks down der dat we Newfoundlanders, ya sees, we got weapons ov mass destruction, er some such, an 'fore ya knows it we'll have more visitors, 'n she's gonna get real busy wit folks lookin everywhere fer what we don't have, ya knows - nucular stuff he calls it, 'n such. But supose dat's hokay, 'cause no harm in a few more folks to party wit. Ya knows yer all welcome on da rock and we sure wants to give ya some ov our Newfoundland 'ospitality!
And the language...well it's also changing on the "right coast".

"You mean "Lord Thunderin' Jesus" don't you..."
yes, that's what he meant .... :)
"Long may you run, long may you run ... "
- Neil Young ...
There truly is some great scenery, variety of climate, and a unique cultural experience "to be had" in Newfoundland. I retired from the corporate working world two weeks ago, and, with more free time for riding, etc., can perhaps offer some ideas if you are planning a trip here. PM me if I can be of help with "what's on the go". As of this Friday I'll on an ST road trip for about three weeks. :)
For info on icebergs and locations, check out http://www.icebergfinder.com/. Most of the ones around Newfoundland are presently in the area Jim visited.
And if you are stuggling with "thunderin'" and Newfoundland expressions, the Dictionary of Newfoundland English might help http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Newfoundland_English
