I'm trying to find out what jacket is best for me, by learning what is best for you.

Tell me why you like the style that you have, please.

I am trying to avoid buying one style, then finding out all the reasons why I should have bought the other. I'd rather know those reasons now. :)

For clarification, I have attached pics of a "half length" jacket (blue) and "3/4 length" jacket (red).

I have a Joe Rocket textile 1/2 length. I'm 5'9" medium build. Fit, form and function are perfect. 3/4 length would be too long for me. I think that it would bunch up on my lap in a normal riding position.

My $0.02.

Since we're all different, that's going to be a challenge.

I like the shorter length jackets myself. Makes it easier to get into my pockets and I don't wind up sitting on it. But lots of other guys like the longer jackets, and they have additional pockets.

I can't afford leather - so I'm using textile (which my wife says we can't afford, either!). I don't worry about it getting wet or messed up as much as I would leather. I've got a mesh jacket for warm days and a heavier jacket for cold.

Cortech GX Air w/Leather for the summer.

Best mesh jacket I've used and I would highly recommend it.

JR Phoenix 3.0 for temps down to about 50 degrees or so.

For anything below that, I'm still hunting. Will prolly look for a 3/4 length touring jacket (tourmaster or something)

Hard to vote since I have FOUR (4) jackets! LOL Not counting my rain gear.

I ahve an Olympia 3/4 length wind/water proof jacket that is my cool/cold weather jacket.

I have an Olympia Airglide jacket (with wind/waterproof insulated liner) for cool/warm weather.

I have a Firstgear Meshtex II jacket for hot weather.

My wife now claims ownership of my JR Atomic Textile jacket, and wears the FG jacket if we're 2-up and it's hot out.

The FG jacket is all meshtex, so all open and silver, thus it is my 85+ degree jacket. THe Olympia Airglide (which I love) is black and has some textile on it, thus not as airy as the FG so it is my 85 and under jacket.

You cn never just have ONE of any MC related gear! LOL

I like wearing waist length solid leather (Joe Rocket). I also wear perforated waist leather (Vanson). And, I also have waist length textile with matching pants, mostly Frank Thomas. Currently I have five jackets and three pants (searching for the right size for another pair of pants). One style/type just doesn’t seem to get it. Leather offers the best protection, textile offers better ventilation!

Clearing throat...... My name is Steve and I'm a jacket addict. I have to answer yes to all of the above except the chaps..........:o: Seriously though, it depends on why/where/when/how long/weather/etc. I wear a short Mesh jacket around town when it's hot, one piece leather on the track, 3/4 lightly padded textile in the dirt, 3/4 length HG Timbuctu Mesh or FG Kili on tour, 3/4 FG leather in the fall........ Well you get the picture. In my defence, some of these are decades old. I can never throw anything out that still works but I still need that new purchase rush every once in a while. :)

Firstgear Kili on longer trips, FG Fuel for other shorter trips/commute, and if it gets over about 95, a Joe Rocket Phoenix. Any other times, when there is a chance of precip: FG Kili.

My first and only jacket so far is the Aerostich Darien jacket - 3/4.....and I love it! It cuts throught the wind incredibly well, has plenty of storage pockets, and vents well in summer or buttons up well in winter.

I added the Darien pants a couple of years ago but don't wear them as frequently.

They're pricey but well worth the investment in my opinion.

Aerostich Darien for 99.9% of my riding. Wet/dry/hot/cold or any combination thereof. Always stylish Hi-Vis color, accented with bug guts in strategic locations. Not fashionable in some circles but it just flat works :bow1:

For the other .1% I have a Honda (Intersport) mesh jacket that's a little more on the sporty side. It rarely sees the light of day.

I've also got a 3/4 length black leather touring coat I never wear.

I have a RoadGear jacket and pants, textile, which are 100% waterproof, and also have thinsolate (sp?) liners for the really cold days here in chicago. fine gear with some flow through for hot days. They have built in reflectors for nite in the fabric and good quality overall. I would order a size larger. In my case when I received my order the jacket was too small, and when I called they sent a larger one and a label for ups to ship the small jacket back! And did this on their nickel! I will like the tourmaster jackets that can convert to a mesh lining, and may get one as well. Also, consider the whether you want a color that stands out!

Living in So. Cal I don't have to contend with extreme weather so I tried to select something that covered the range I would be traveling in the most. I went with the Olympia Moto Sport Bushwhacker (http://www.olympiamotosports.com/bushwacker/bushwacker.htm)¾ Mesh Tech Jacket and a pair of Airglide 2 Mesh Tech Pants. Being mesh meant I would be cooler in the summer and with the liners I would be toasty in the fall. Other reasons I went with this brand and style were the CE approved Motion Flex armor, Removable Utility/Fanny Pack for extra storage on the road, Eight storage pockets in the jacket, and 3/4 length to keep the draft out at the waist.

P.S. - This isn't me I borrowed it from their site. Actually, I'm better looking :D .

I went with half length mesh. I prefer riding in 100+ temps (California Gold Country and the Southwest Deserts) and the mesh jacket is the only way to go. I went half length because it felt the most comfortable.

In the winter I wear a 3/4 length leather jacket. If the temp goes below 50 I wear a gerbing liner beneath it.

I voted for 3/4 but in the summer I wear a 1/2 mesh. There was no option for this. But there it is. :03biker:

Very expensive!

I started off with the Rukka trousers (pants) and they are an excellent fit, there is also a lot of back up from the company should you have any complaints or problems. The ones that I have are the snuggest fitting I have ever had.

I have had Revitt gear, what a load of rubbish and thank goodness I did not have to pay full wack for them, in fact the jacket was free for evaluation.

I had Revitt trousers and jacket and I was told by the rep that it was all the best on the market. They leak in wet weather and as far as I am concerned, they do not live up to what they advertise, one word springs to mind and that is crap!

Spada gear, reported to be one of the best in the UK according to the polls in the motorcycle magazines. I have found they still let water in on heavy downfalls so I still have to put a waterproof plastic jacket over the top of it to remain dry. Again one word comment and that is Crap!

The Rukka gear, so far I have been out in torrential rain and only had water seep into the pockets on the jacket. I can go along with that so long as my body and legs stay dry, that matters to me.

The Rukka trousers feel as though I have been to a tailors shop and they have been made to measure, the jacket is a bit cumbersome because it feels as though you are putting a heavy canvas tent over your shoulders.

However, from the extensive tests I have done in all sorts of weather, so far, the Rukka gear comes out on top.

I know it is very expensive clothing, but if you ride all year round you want the protection for both waterproofing and body protection. My comments may change as time goes on as I have only had the Rukka gear for a few months. I feel that I have been sponsored in a way by these companies because of the price I paid for them, but what I did tell them on the outset, I will always give an honest opinion to my findings.

To date, Rukka is winning hands down and it is worth paying that little extra knowing that you have full protection. The gear is warranteed for 5 years and that cant be bad!

I didn't hit the vote button since I wasn't sure that "other" was the best choice.

I'm new to the ST, so I'm still on the fence perhaps, coming from the Wing, I'm use to a more air shielding. I would say that during the summer I would wear the Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket most of the time (is it 1/2 or 3/4 since it comes down to my waist). However, since I do feel more wind on the ST than on the Wing, I have been wearing my Aerostitch Darian jacket most of the time. Once the temp. is in the 90's ALL DAY LONG, INCLUDING NIGHT TIME, then I will probably leave the house with my mesh jacket.

I NEVER ride without protection on my uppers and lowers (jacket and pants). Helmet is a given.

For summer I have use JR Phoenix jacket (1/2) and pant setup that zips in the rear. For other seasons (CA has 2 - summer and everything else) I use a JR Super Ego (1/2) jacket that zips to the JR Blaster 2.0 pant. The JR Super Ego jacket is nice in that the leather outer shell can zip away and turn into a mesh jacket for when it warms up.

The temps are moderate in Florida are rarely dip below 30 degrees so I wear a Tourmaster Flex 1/2 length jacket in "winter" and the rest of the year a Tourmaster Intake mesh 1/2 jacket. Both have zip-in windproof liners and thermal liners. With the Flex you can zip in windproof textile panels that cover the mesh front and back so with the liners it is 3 layers thick. As the day warms up I can remove linings or the outer panels. Now that it is 88-95 degrees I wear the mesh intake jacket with no liners. For pants Joe Rocket mesh. I think they are 2.0's. Some days I'll wear a pair of Joe Rocket Steel Jeans with a type of woven steel wire cloth sewn into the knees and butt. In "winter" I wear a pair of Tourmaster overpants over jeans.

I use a BMW Rallye 2 suit - a 3/4 jacket with lots of pockets, vents and waterproof liner for the pants, as well. The sleeves zip off to leave a vest for when I'm off the bike. This is my touring suit for most times of the year - not winter in cold areas. For that I have a Fox leather "racing" jacket with liner - this has good venting, weighs a ton and I love it! BTW, the people at Fox are great to buy from. They spend time with you (on the phone) to get a good fit and they stand buy their word. When it's hot and I am not traveling, I use my Rev-it mesh 1/2 jacket with my BMW summer pants (the legs zip off to make shorts when you stop riding). Except for the Fox, everything has armour for elbows, shoulders, knees and spine. Don't leave home without it.

I always wanted a stable of great bikes but instead I seem to have acquired one great bike ('03 ST13) and a collection of great riding gear!

Joe Rocket SpeedMaster leather jacket and pants. Removable liner. Vented in the sleeves, waist, and in the pants' crotch area. Use the jacket's front zipper to control the ventilation. Can get hot when stopped in 90 degree plus weather. Almost never cold with the liner in, even at 30 degrees F. Heavy weight. Best protection in a fall. Pricey, but worth it to me.

Right now I use a one-piece fabric riding suit which I got CHEAP on ebay ($20 or so). Made by Moto Wear International and I think it was originally made for motocross, I'm not sure. But it is very good for general riding in moderate temperatures. It has seen some LIGHT rain with no problem leaking. It has a liner and velcro closures at the wrists, ankles, over the front zipper, and the collar. 2 VERY SMALL pockets, velcro closure. It is working very well for my daily commute (100 miles a day).

I carry my accoutrama in a fanny pack.

I also have a traditional police-style leather jacket which I can wear by itself or over the one-piece for cold and wet conditions.

I am glad to see this thread because I want some new stuff for SWAMBO and I. I saw Byron's Olympia jacket and it looks good to both of us. I like the utilitarian features. There are some other competitive jackets I think. I plan some research.

Unfortunately I don't look as good as he does. I look like 40 miles of bad road! The jacket's not going to improve that.

I wear plain 'ol leather jacket when it's decent. But if it's cold or rainy I have an Alpinestars Jet Road Jacket and Alpinestars Jet Road Overpant. Both have a GorTex liner and both are very waterproof. 12 degrees outside at 70 miles an hour no prob. The coat is longer but when you have a shoter jacket and it's cold you can surely find every little bit of cold air that is leaking into your jacket. Even if it's 50 degrees and raining. I really like the longer jacket for that reason. Good luck.

I have an AlpineStars 3/4 textile with Gore-tex protection. This jacket is warm even without the isolation, there is no ventilation.
So for the warmer (dry) weather, I've bought a Cortech jeans jacket

I have a 1/2 Joe Rocket Alter Ego. This is a very nice textile "all weather" jacket, wind protection with outer shell in place. About 80 percent of the outer shell zips off very easily to leave a mesh jacket, and there is a removable liner for rainy rides. Of coarse there is adjustable/removable padding in arms, shoulders and back. Cost? It is I believe the most expensive textile by JR but it has been well worth the money. I ride every day except when I just have to haul something with the Ol truck, and have been using the jacket on every ride. No problems at all. Joe Rocket did a great job in design and construction on this one. I also have the AE pants but I do not wear them very often. If you want to cover all the bases jacket wise, this is a great one. Uh No, you can't have mine!

For the wamer weather 70+ I have a Gericke Aero X that has armor and air intake in the right places.

http://www.helmetharbor.com/streetclothing/gericke/opening.htm

I also have a Firstgear Z Pilot that will comfortably take me to freezing temps with nothing more than a turtle neck on underneath. I have never seen another coat more durably built, both in quality of leather and armor.

Unfortunately as most coats go, they don't make them anymore. They are available online at many places for a discounted price. I supplied one link above.

JR Pheonix 4 most of the year as living in texas you can wear this jacket with a heavy weight shirt under if it gets chilly. I have to say it does fit me better than most. I do plan on buying a TM Advanced for the coming colder temps though.

The JR comes with a rain liner that works well but doenst really allow any breathing from the body out so it tends to get "sticky" underneath.

Anyway, there are so many options that I believe you have to go to a shop and try on as many styles as you like then decide and find it on the internet for cheaper. Just make sure it has quality armour for those just in case times.

That my nickel worth

From a previous post:

Textile Protective Options (part 2)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I took the plunge this weekend and purchased my new gear.

After much deliberation from all forum memeber input and hands-on evaluation, I went with the Olympia gear (AST jacket in neon yellow/black (high vis) and the Ranger 2 pants).

Purchased at the the BMW shop in Grand Rapids, MI. The folks there were very helpful and patient. They have about 4 product lines there if you want to compare or more importantly, try the stuff on for actual size. They worked with me on price. That's all I will say on that part(!).

I had the chance to test the gear out on a 300 mile run this past saturday. Was about 50 degF during the peak of the day and about 35-40 degF on the way home. Fit, form, and function were very good. Comfortable and warm enough with the liners installed. Wore poly long johns (no jeans) in the overpants w/liner and poly top w/lightweight polartech shirt under the jacket.

Firstgear Kilimanjaro and overpant for the past eight years. It has taken me through some incredible down pours dry. And it is vented for the heat. Use BMW riding pants for the summer, but I still wear that jacket!

OK. Occasionally wear my leather jacket and chaps just because I have them. But the day has got to be perfect - not too hot, not too cold.

Recently purchased the Tour Master Transition. The only jacket I own. I don't wear the Thinsulate liner. About the only time it becomes too unbearable is if the temp hits 95+. When this happens, I lower my windshield a bit and let the air flow over/through me. It cools me down.

TourMaster mesh jacket for warm weather and Spidi 3/4 jacket for cooler weather and long rides. The Tourmaster zipper doesn't mate with my JR Alta Ego pants and in cold weather the gap can be considerable. The Spidi is a far better jacket but when the temps are 100F+ the TourMaster is cooler. Both have rain liners. The TourMaster is 2 years old and only now beginning to show some wear and since I wear it about 80% of the time, it's done a great job.

Two sets of FirstGear, mesh short jacket & overpants for summer, short jacket w/liner & lined overpants for winter. Both overpants are seldom worn (pain to get into & out of); Diamond Gusset and Draggin' armored jeans favored. In dry weather, I prefer my Fox Creek Leather 'racer' jacket. Elegant piece of work. Tour Master Transition (Red) and FG overpants. Love em both. 3/4 length works better for my "round-ish" figure (5'10" - 220#) Been riding short distance (commute to work) at 35-40f and very comfortable.

I'll need to get a mesh jacket for summer, though.

ok, my two centavos;
Joe Rocket 1/2 textile for most of the time, has a liner
A mesh 1/2 length for when it's over 80-85*,
an X-pert HEAVY 3/4 leather with quilted liner for cold weather
and some rain gear for you know ...wet
all have armor ('cept the rain gear) and I have a pair of leather chaps that I wear over my draggin jeans when I'm not wearing my textile over pants.
Joe rocket gloves with gauntlets too :D atgatt

now if I can just find some good riding boots in a 8 1/2 4E

I wear an Aerostich Roadcrafter One Piece 80% of the time, when the weather gets cold I have Gerbings heated liners and when the weather gets warmer I wear Vanson leathers, I have perf and regular leather jackets and pants.

I've got 2 half-length textile jackets.

Fieldsheer mesh jacket with removable waterproof liner for mild/warm weather.
Joe Rocket Lightspeed jacket with quilted liner for colder weather.

Leather jackets look nice and have some greater abrasion protection, but my experience with them is they are most comfortable in mild weather.

I've got a Gericke Vento Textile short for most of the year. And a TourMaster Transition Textile when things get brisk. They both fit my tall, skinny frame very well.

Most riders at an ST level will have more than one because there's no perfect all weather jacket. I've got a JR Phoenix mesh for hot weather & an Olympic AST<3/4> for everything else.

I wear a 3/4 JR ballistic which is great in cold weather. I also got a roadcrafter one piece jacket but it sucks in cold weather as it is not 3/4, so air enters from the back unless I cover the jacket ends with my rain pant elastic waist.

I see that the darien is 3/4 but I might just go for a FG Kili for touring as the next jacket.

I have a JR Honda mesh right now that I love. I tried to get away form logo gear since moving from the Harley, however with a 37" sleeve length I have to go with fit first. I need to get a cold weather jacket since I don't want to wear my cruiser leather on the ST and thought about the 3/4 jackets but am concerned about the length being annoying, any feedback on that?

I wear a FG 1/2 length textile when it's really hot weather and a Vanson 1/2 length leather most of the time because I feel like I am protected better in the Vanson. I've had lots of different brands and the Vanson is 1st quality all the way. Just my .02 cents worth.

I voted my 3/4 textile, waterproof with liner (cooler riding), but I also have 1/2 mesh jacket with a goretex liner (warmer riding). I like the 3/4 jacket better, but the temputure dictates that I where the 1/2 more. Both jackets have armor. Ron:06biker:

I wear my Belstaff Merlin for anything up to about 80.. after that it is a Teknic Aquavent mesh jacket, which is ok but not great for protection.. On trips I take both with me. I may go to the bmw santiago or comforshell for hotter weather, or try the motoport kevlar stretch..
I wear draggin jeans all the time.. but again may go to the motoport jeans next..

Let me see,

$190 for leather jacket while on the Harley
$145 for JR Phoenix on the Kawasaki & Shadow
$190 for the TourMaster Flex on the ST1100

That's, $525, I could have bought the Darien. Oh well.

I need an XLT (extra large tall) 3/4 length water / wind proof winter riding jacket and pants.

Any one out there 6"4" with long arms and having good luck finding a brand that fits??? The 2X is to big around the middle and the XL sleeve length is too short. Anyone have a good link to a website for tall riding apparel?

Thanks,

I have a Joe Rocket textile 1/2 length. I'm 5'9" medium build. Fit, form and function are perfect. 3/4 length would be too long for me. I think that it would bunch up on my lap in a normal riding position.

My $0.02.

I own three(3) waist level jacket. Two Titanium mesh and one fully leather. The mesh is the APS brand mesh jackets which is armored and one is black and the other is blue. The leather jacket is all black and has 8 vents, which comes in handy on warmer day. I find that if a like a product with a great fit, I'll purchase a second one in a different color scheme...

I wear a Joe Rocket Alter Ego Jacket. I like it because I can pull of the shell and turn it into a mesh jacket in minutes. I found that when touring out west in the rockies that there can be as much as a 40 degree change in temperature depending on elevation. On my 7200 mile tour this summer out west, I experienced temps from a low of 35 and raining in Utah to a high of 98 in bright sunshine in Nashville. This was in June. I also found that in the cold you can use a heated vest under it and stay very warm. Although it is difficult to find a single jacket for all conditions, the Alter Ego comes close.

Good luck

Terry did you get yours in RED and if so do you think it would clash with the :biker: RED.
I have been looking at this jacket and the only thing holding me up is the size.

After reading Pauls comments I'm kind of leary since I'm an XL with a XXL belly.:D

I didn't have this jacket in the "All Weather" version,,, just the Mesh... I got the mesh in the Black as it was the only one that came in Tall...

I did get a XL tall and it fit more like a XXL... Not a BIG XXL,,, but bigger than most XL I had ever had...

The Red???

Honestly,,, it might just be a shade off IMHO... You can get away with the wrong Red as long as it is a small amount of the wrong Red... This might be a a shade off,,, and a shade to much too...

Im outfitted with "inexpensive" Joe Rocket 1/2 length jacket and pants. The Zip out insulated liner makes it perfect for summer or winter riding here in the great Northwest. Added benefit is that its waterproof.
Having said that- if I had it to do over again, I would go with a 1 piece textile waterproof suit with a removable liner. I've seen some that zip from neck to toe on the left side- making it really easy to put on/ take off. If its not easy to put on then we are less likely to wear it.

You probably don't need any more answers, but, what the hay. Since I started riding again 2 years ago, after a few years off, my only jacket has been an Olympic 3/4 textile/mesh with windproof/waterproof liner. I have matching pants, also with liner. Both the jacket and pants are about half mesh and half solid nylon. As with other outdoor sports, layering is the key. I have been comfy in my jacket at highway speeds down to about 40 degrees. At that temp, I wore a microfleece turtleneck and a fleece vest underneath. I have also worn that jacket sans liner at temps around 90, where I was OK when moving but a bit sweaty when stopped or in slow traffic. So, like the others here, I bought a FirstGear Meshtex 1/2 length, which is total mesh. Now, I am comfy in temps above 85. I have seen the comment that leather offers more protection. I'm not so sure, since these new textile jackets have ballistic pads in the knees, shoulders, elbows and between the shoulder blades. I think the new mesh jackets offer both the best ventilation and the best crash/skid protection. The one thing that mesh jackets don't do is shield you from heat, which leather does, but obviously you must be moving! Protect yourself and ride safe!

I have the Marsee Adventure 3/4 jacket. Worn it everyday for a couple of years now, even crashed it once. Wears well and is very comfortable. When they first came out they were running $360 at the local BMW shop.

Well I almost did it last year but in Mar. I had a reversal of fortune and my back which had been getting steadily better for over a year, laid me right out for a month!:(

I don't want to come right out and say that I am coming this year because I may jinx it and it will start to snow the day before I am to leave. :)

And besides that, given past weather history, I think a large mug of hot chocolate would be required!:D
