View Full Version : Stewart-Cassiar highway
Have any of you traveled this highway in the last year or two? Is it in good enough condition to take a 04 ST up there? How far apart are the Gas stations? Do you think I will need to take a 3 gallon gas can with me? I was planning to go to Alaska mid July on the Alaska highway but it looks like it is mostly flat and baren landscape. I want to see the mountains and valleys and the Stewart-Cassier Highway looks like it has much nicer scenery.

I was there last July in a car and approximately 70-75 miles of the road was still graded dirt/gravel. There will probably be less rock/dirt road this year because I think the goal is to pave it all. You could easily ride the ST1300 on the road up to the Alaskan Hwy from the Yellowhead, but it sure will be dirty!! Slow down and get off to the road's edge when you see some idiot coming at you on the rocked portion at 60 mph in an old beat up pickup truck because they kick off some mighty big rocks. Three of us plan on riding up the same way in July...........two of us will be on 1000 VStroms and the third on a BMW K1200LT. I rode it in 1999 on a KLR650 and it was hard to tell how much was actually paved because it rained on us for 400 miles and was 45 degrees.....................I was shivering too much to see clearly.

You will be able to get the gas without carrying a gas can and it is definitely a pretty ride..........much better than most of of the Alaskan Hwy. I would say there are three to four places to gas up.

This info is about a week and a half old.
The one lane bridge that connects Meziadin Junction to Stewart is being rebuilt , it is closed all day Monday - Friday after 6 am - 5am except for 2 hours at noon.
On the Cassiar there was only about 25 miles that was not paved. And with the coal mine at Mount Bell going into production in a few years the rest will be paved. There was some road construction south of Dease Lake.
I consider 16 from Prince George to 37 to Watson Lake a must do if in the area.
And I consider it ST friendy.
Thanks Dave. The valuable info is mush appreciated. I was considering taking the ferry from the northern tip of the Island (Port Hardy) to Prince Rupert and then up the Cassier but I don't want to miss any nice rides so I think I will scip the ferry. Maybe I will take it home.
