I was thinking of trading in my 06 St next year for a Goldwing, has anyone owned a newer Goldwing and what did you like - dislike about it.

Thanks

I had an '05 Gold Wing.

Likes:
GL1800 very quick for the Wings
-Smooth sailing
-Built in FM Radio, may also be a negative if that isn't what you need...I don't need it now since I changed my XM Radios to NOT require an FM radio.
-Comfortable for my wife
-Cruise Control built in (paid for with cost if you will)
-Easy open saddle bags (and trunk)...one key opens all
-Large output alternator

Dislikes:
-OVERHEATING at slow speeds. If I didn't change over to the ST1300 I was going to reverse the fans to fix that problem.
-Can't remove Top Box...something required for one of my hobbies.
-Can't fit my fullface helmet in any thing but top box. I like being able to put helmets in the saddle bags of the ST1300.
-Not as nimble as the ST1300

Those are some off the top of my head, I think this was covered a few posts down, and Mellow put in a lot of good comments (both ways). I'm very happy with the ST1300!

Yo Ken... did you notice where he posted this? LOL.. .and they say I'm old for getting the Wing.. LOL

I know of one person that has an '06 with the full package, ABS, Audio, navigation and comfort. I think he had an '03 prior to that or maybe it was an '01, I can't remember.

Anyway, he said it was pretty much the same basic bike other than the audio, comfort and nav upgrades. He did say the radiators are larger and the fans kick in sooner which shoule reduce if not eliminate the tendency for the temp guage to start climbing in very slow traffic. Both of my Wings, 01 and 05 have had the temp guage climb in slow traffic conditions but never had an actual overheat situation.

The only negative I've heard is the pricing issue and the fact that the gps can't be changed while riding, other than a zoom in/out type function.

I just rode a 2006 Wing with 20 miles on it other day.

1. Front wheel shimmy on deacceleration from about 50 mph to 30mph with hands off bars. This is a known issue and problem for many. But on a brand new wing with 20 miles? COme on Honda! Not a tank slapper, just a shake back and forth of the bars about 1/2 inch. Hmmm, this was a concern of mine BEFORE I test rode the bike.

2. Could feet the front wheel shimmy with hands on the bars while accelerating through the 30 to 50mph range. The mphs are approximate. Not bad, very slight, but shoot, I shouldnt feel anything but smooth on this bike. When I asked the dealer, what are you going to do to fix my new Wing if it does this, he just looked at me. The service department at 2 honda dealers wouldnt admit that many wings have this problem. The one dealer was going to call Honda and call me back with an answer...that was 2 days ago. Guess they dont want to sell a Wing...LOL

3. Suspension sucks...more so that the stock ST1300 suspension. There are fixes for the Wing suspension, but add some $$$$. Seems like Honda is skimping on suspensions on their bikes, other than sport, in recent years and that's a shame.

4. Radio was unimpressive. You could hear it while travelling, but not the way I would consider it acceptable for quality audio. You will need headset speakers IMO so the difference between the 2001 -2005 with the 2 speaker setup vs. the 2006 with the six speaker and 80 watt amp is not worth it IMO. You will be using headseats if you wear a helmet.

5. Motor is incredibly smooth. A bit slow for me, but smooth as silk.

6. Brakes were not impressive. Maybe due to only 20 miles on the bike (as most seem to say brakes on the Wing are great) but it wasnt any better than my old GL1500.

Nope, I wont be getting Wing! I thought about it, but after that test ride, no Wing.

If you are going to ride two up the wing is the only way to go, solo stick to the ST:biker:

It depends what kind of riding you are going to do. The GoldWing is the best touring bike ever built.

I would have to say the ST is the sport tourer ever built. It will easily outperform the GW in all performance aspects including tank to tank distance. Long distance touring comfort goes to the GW.

We actually found the ST to suit us much better for 2-up riding. The GW was just too impersonal and missing the fun factor.

Wife says we're not "mature" enough for an Oldwing....

The ST stays. :)

I had an 01 1800 and it did everything good, like a new vacuum cleaner, and about as exciting. I put 51K on it in 22 months and then got a ST13. Will never go back. Nothing bad on Wing except lack of ground clearance, but Titanium peg feelers were fun to ground in corners........ :) just my 2 cents

I have both. They are both very reliable motorcycles. The Wing is my 5th. The ST is my 1st. I have had two Wings that I put over 100,000 miles on. An '88 and an '01. Yeah they shake their heads on decel from 50-35, yeah they are like vanilla, but if I could only have one bike it would be the Wing. They are like the energizer bunny and keep on going and going and ...........
