I'm interested ( I don't thing regular people can reply to your original post). But I have a question or two. Any idea how this might work on with a K&N? How much has to come apart to install it? And approx cost?
thanks,

Interesting. A friend was over when I was installing the TC fuel regulator. We both commented about the restrictive appearance of the airbox. I'd guess the little shelf works well.

The above posts are referring to this new product annoucement from Turbo Tom.... http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=13970
Tom,
From the pics on the above thread, not sure exactly what you are doing. Any chance there could be more pics that may clear things up? I would be interested in testing your product.

If I'm not mistaken what Tom's modification to the airbox lid does is allow air in the 2 ports that are shown. The air cleaner modification would be to cut the center of the top plate out so that it looks like the bottom. When the engine needs more air than the lower snorkle can provide it is able to draw the additional air from under the tank.
Sounds like a neat idea that I might just be interested in. :D

How does it work with the KnN?
Did you notice a power difference with just the KnN?
Has anyone tried the new air filter on Tom's site?
Thanks

Thanks for all the interest in this modification. I will try to answer most of your questions.
I have been testing this for only a short time (1 week). The modification involves bonding an assembly is side the lid of the stock air clean housing. It seals the front upper portion of the housing. A slot or a series of holes are drilled in the front edge of the housing above the plate, opening the area to the outside. Air is drawn in between the frame and the gas tank. There is a fairly large opening there on each side. It is air about the same temperature as the lower stock inlet as it is not behind the radiator. The air filter is opened up on the top to let the air into the filter.
Rain entering the filter should not be a problem as it is in a well protected area, Water from a hose may be a problem if directed at the openings.
As for performance, I have not had time to do any dyno work, and many of you may know that I don't believe in the results. ( I had a 500 hp chassis dyno that I ran for years, I could give you any number that you wanted to see.)
The biggest change is in the 5000 rpm and up. The engine "transistions" much faster and pulls harder. Recalibration of the fuel regulator may be required to take full advantage of the additional air flow.
I do not have these for sale yet as I am still testing. I will have a couple of them assembled for the SoCalTechSToc on July 1 and want to install them on as many ST's as I can for short testing.
I am looking at a $45.00 price for the plate and $52.00 for the modified filter.
Thanks Tom

I think I'll pass on having dirt, dust, grit etc going thru my engine.
Might as well remove the air filter altogether.

I hate to bother you, but.... I just got my FPR but haven't installed it yet. should I wait until you get this airbox thing done? Also after reading the K&N stuff I am pretty well convinced I will stay with the stock filter. I have had K&N on all my cruisers but never on more than two cyclinders. I am asumming your mod will be with the Honda filters?
thanks...I was going to send you a PM but thought this might be on others minds (at least maybe one)

That makes absolutely no sense what-so-ever.
Tom has offered some top notch accessories and mods for the ST. He takes great care and pride in what he does and wouldn't be offering something that would be potentially harmful to anyone's engine.

The air is 100 % passed thru the filter. We are using our new S&B filters that have additional filtering medium over the K&N.
The stock filter could be modified also, but if we are trying to increase airflow the aftermarket filters do a better job. I have used K&N type filters in all of my motorcycles and have never had an engine failure/damage because of it. (I don"t want to get this debate going again).
Thanks Tom

From looking at this pic It did look like the filter was bypassed all together.

I will try to post some better pictures. The plate that I fabricated seals the top of the filter and creates a closed chamber above the filter

If you want to use the stock filter (modified) in the modified housing, the standard upgrade FPR (58) should work.

I am interested in the modification, but what absolutely needs to be done is some exhaust gas monitoring before and after the modification. Even if seat of the pants stuff feels good, you gotta have documentation when messing with the air intake that you are not running the motor too lean. Spark plug checks...yeah good idea, but still not the data I would be seeking.
Tom, I would hope you do get a some exhaust gas data and correlate it to your modified fuel pressure regulators. Again, while I like the idea of the modification, without seeing exhaust gas data, I will pass on the modification even if others just love the seat of the pants feel. Just my .02

The air is different out here on the east coast Tom... you had better let me test the box for you so we can make sure it works correctly ;).
I am interested - big time! So make 'em, I'll buy one. Seriously, I will put one in if you need a tester...
Thanks for everything you provide to us Tom. :bow1:

I have been able to run a couple of tanks of gas with the modification. It is hard to guage the fuel eccomomy as I think I am driving a little harder than normal. It appears to be very slightly better. (normal 235-240 mile before reserve- now 245-250 on the last 2 tanks) Will probebly increase once I get back to my normal mode of riding.
With more riding, it appears that the modification really showes itself in 2nd,3rd, and 4th gears- 5000-9000 rpm. I think in 1st gear the rpm climb so fast that it is hard to feel much improvement. In 5th, the rpm's climb slower and the effect is less noticable. For the spirited rider, this works really well. The other gear transitions pull harder.
I will have a better idea of the potental after this Saturdays meeting here.
I have a couple of these made up and we are going to test them on as many different ST's as we can. Will report the results.
Thanks for your interest. Tom
If it's like the FPR testing last year Tom, you'll have no shortage of volunteers -- I'll be a willing test subject once again! :)
