I appreciate you asked the question a long time ago... When I asked this question a couple of days ago, the best answer I was given was as attached. Perhaps the most confusing part of the VIN is the model descriptor (characters 4 to 8). I did find the following somewhere on the web...
SC510 = 2003 Non ABS
SC513 = 2003 ABS
SC511 = 2004 Non ABS
SC514 = 2004 ABS
However, I think this only applies to US bikes or doesn't tell the full story because my model descriptor in my VIN is SC51A. A quick check on the ST VIN register told me I'm not the only one with an SC51A.

Interesting , Dosen't the M designator for Assembly plant mean Maryville ??
