View Full Version : Unexpected redline & brief 'miss'

I had read that the front end could be pulled up on the ST if you go to 7000 in second then whack the throttle. So, I just had to try it the other day. My results were rather unexpected - when I whacked the throttle I felt a brief increase in acceleration then I heard the rev limiter kick in. I looked down at the tach and she was spinning around 9500. I quickly let off (was there for maybe a second). I was pretty confused about what had happened. Had my back wheel broke loose? I don't think so. Had I accelerated from the 7k mark to redline in just that short time and not noticed the increase in speed? I don't think so. Had the tranny/clutch slipped? I think that's what may have happened. Anyone have other theories or similar experiences?
Then, I noticed a second unexpected happening. I parked the bike the other day then spent about 30-40 minutes waxing it. I get back on it and I'm rolling along at about 2k in first and I hear 2-3 loud 'knocks/clanks' and the engine acts like it's missing. I couldn't tell if the clank was the driveline lashing (I believe so but when I first heard it I thought a gear tooth had dropped), but can't for the life of me figure out why a new bike (less than 1k) would be missing (a little water in the tank maybe). It hasn't done it again.
I know these two things are probably isolated incidents but I'm just curious if anyone else has experienced the same thing...

I would never dump the clutch on a heavy bike like the ST.

If you want the front end to come up, just snatch the thottle in first gear, it will come up.

NCrider - I didn't dump the clutch. If I had done that then I would have most definitely diagnosed the occurance as a slipping clutch.
I think maybe I've stumbled upon a good theory having just read another post:
"The bike is equipted with a Knock sensor. Its supposed operate this way.Every time you start the bike,, its supposed to advance the spark curve until it notices detonation and then, retards the Ignition timing to match your fuel.. Its silent and you never know its doing this.. Welcome to the magic of Honda fuel injection.."

Having read this I think maybe the bike was just going thru some initialization of the FI and the noise I heard was detonation or pinging. I think it's going to take me a while to get used to the FI and a computer controlling fuel flow!

The throttle can be twitchy, that's why many install TurboCity Tom's Fuel Pressure Regulator - many say this solves that problem. Since you were in 1st and doing 2k, this might have just been a twitchy throttle as, when it does that, you feel the driveline jerk.

1st gear with those rpms does take a gentle hand to keep the bike from being so twitchy. At least, that's what I seem to recall... from my ST days..

It might be bad gas too, only time will tell on that one.

Ah sorry, misread that.

...of course I have to add that this usually causes a different sort of unexpected noise
