Can anyone recommend some nice roads to take in MO? We are coming in from the North (Lincoln, NE) and heading for St Louis area. I was figuring or hoping to start heading east in MO at St Joe's, and bypass Kansas City. Would prefer to avoid the interstate if possible.
We are not familiar with the highways in MO, so though someone could make some suggestions.
:)

I've been watching this, as I intended to make the same runs, but doesn't appear to be a lot of response yet. :(

There are a lot of GREAT roads - they just aren't in the area you've listed (you are staying pretty much north of the Ozarks). Those of us that live and ride in the Ozarks have seen what good advertising has done to the Smokies and prefer the Ozarks remain a secret! :)
There are some good roads north of I-44 but the area is too populated for my tastes! Further south, all roads in the Ozarks are twisty and up and down, it would be easier to list the straight roads (5 south of Mansfield to Gainesville and 63 south from Rolla to West Plains:( )
South of Springfield is 125 and 14 and 7 from Harrison to Russelville with countless twistie roads in between ..... but way south and west of the St Louis area. 160 along the entire length of the Arkansas border is also fun. Few bad, read straight, roads in southern Mo./ northern Arkansas. Further east but still south of St. Louis, around the Current river / National Scenic River, using 67 and 63 as east west borders is nothing but twisty roads. Bixby at the intersection of 32 and 49 is a popular destination putting you in the middle of good roads.
GREATLY COMPLICATING matters in Missouri is the road naming system of paved county roads being named by letters and double letters (A to ZZ). The problem is each county names the road at the county border so ZZ can suddenly become BB, a US highway, or a numbered (read unpaved) county road (County Road 234). These roads are often the most scenic and fun but a GPS is recommended :) !

The reason I have not spoke up is,,, I never seem to ride much in Missouri... I have no idea why,,, I just always blast through heading to Canada/West Coast it seems... :o:
The only recommendation I can give you is,,, RT 36 from St Joseph to Hannibal... Then,,, take Rt 79 South... Very cool road on the North end with little traffic,,, and views of the Mississippi...

Thanks. When I was a kid we used to vacation in Branson , long before Branson was what it is today. I recall there were some great roads through Missouri, but wow, that was many years ago.
The last time I went down there (From Chicago Area) when I was still in College. Branson was just beginning to start developing, though there was still nothing there to speak of....I still remember thinking how great it would be to be on a bike riding down those highways.
Brad, your route would take you through a lot of those twisties.
Your right Tom! Keep it a secret.

Let me know if you get in the Bull Shoals area and need a place to stay - our cabin at Theodosia Marina might be available - it's free for bikers.

STumpy,
There is not much north of Hwy 70. Can you give me any dates of when you will be down St. Louis way?, and which way will you be heading from St. Louis? If I know a few more details I might be able to help.
Right now NewsMag is in town on business and is headed for Hannibal on Saturday.
Next weekend 07/15/2006 I will be taking him on one of my more favorite day rides into southern Missouri to a town called Bixby. If any one is in the area and wants to join us let me know and I will fill in the blanks.

Last week I came down from Council Bluffs to STL. We traveled US 36 vs. I-70. Not much there to say the least. Most of the better roads are south of at least I70 and more are south of I44. Mark Twain Nat'l Forest and such is great. Actually the roads b/t I70 and I44 are pretty good. If you want to take US36 to US63 south and then head down to Jefferson City and then East through Herman and such to STL are pretty nice. That area is thick with Wineries, some pretty good wine too.

Not sure if we will be near that area, but it might be closer to Brad's Route. I have to look at a map of MO and figure out how we plan to get to our destination. So far I have only briefly looked at some of the roads.

Actually our final destination is St Charles, MO, which I believe is near St Louis. We need to be there by 8-31. So we would probably be traveling through MO the week of the 28th in August. A lot depends on how fast we want to get there.... IT would be nice to take a liesurely route and enjoy some of those southern route roads.

I agree that most good Missouri riding in south of US 50 or along the Mississippi, but.....
From Rulo, Ne take Hwy 7 south to Troy, Ks. Great ride along the Missouri River. Hwy 36 to St Joseph. East out of St Joe to US 65 South-cross the Missouri River again at Waverly. At Marshall, Mo take Hwy 41 East to Boonville. Good ride along the river through historic towns such as Arrow Rock. Just East of Boonville take Hwy 179 South to Jefferson City. Again, great ride along the MIssouri River. At Jeff City take Hwy 94 on the North side of the Missouri River. great pavement, sweeping curves, etc. ENJOY

Thanks for the info. This was a GREAT RIDE! Booneville on to St. Louis especially! Like a roller coaster. Beautiful area. Had a few deer jump out in front of me but got slowed down in time. Stopped at a winery in Augusta and picked up a few bottles of wine then hit the brewery for lunch.
You left out the casino at Booneville. We found it tho....
Thanks so much for your help!

How'd y'all do at CSA?
What's CSA ? :hyp1:
Not great. We ended up with 3rd place for Osbtacle in heavyweight class.
It was a pretty quiet CSA. The banquet was held in an ICE RINK. Nice and cold, though the ladies were all complaining it was too cold.
BTW- Next CSA is in Kansas City, MO and not Oklahoma like we originally thought. 2008 will be in Oklahoma.
The route to St Charles was exceptional. Sink was like a kid in a candy shop. Lots of great roads. At times you felt like you were on a Wild Mouse roller coaster ride. Deer were the only real hazard, but fortunately they crossed way ahead of us .....
We saw a few ST's on Hwy's 94 and 179 as well.
Hat's off to Idee for the route. IT was GREAT!

We wish we could, but our time was limited and the northern route was the only way we could do it. I agree, I have been in that area many times in the past, but always in a car. Still, MO is one of those hidden secrets for great rides. Hope it stays that way. Dont want too much traffic spoiling those great rides !! :)
