I find myself continually reaching for '6th' gear... Unfortunately, it is not there. I've put a little over 7k on my 04 since November. I was wondering when am I going to stop reaching for '6th'? Help me!

If this is a real question ? My answer is take forth up higher and longer ! Fun factor goes way up and your overdrive will feel more an overdrive ! don't feel bad though I still find my self looking for seventh on the ZZR

I still do it occasionaly after 3 1/2 years!
What part of "Muntgummery" are you in?
(Edit - Whoops - just saw the P-Ville tag - you are close to Bama-Rider!)
I lived on the east side off of Vaughn Rd. past Taylor for about 3 years.
GREAT riding up north and in north Georgia!

I sometimes "fish" for 6th. Having ridden low rpm cruisers on and off the last few years I think I got used to listening for the low speed engine sound after the shift to top gear.

Yep... Live in P'ville....Lived near Sturbridge (PepperTree Apts) from 1998 - 2002. Grew up in Chattanooga, TN.... Some REALLY great riding up that way!!! I still make it up that way a couple times/year on the bike for a run of the old roads... Trouble is, I can never get them all in... Too many to count!!! :) From P'ville, I have an hour ride North or North East before the roads even begin to become interesting... :( Oh, well... That's what I get for falling for a P'ville girl... :D

P.S. Yes, this is a real question...

I agree totally, heck, I used to forget I had a 5th gear on the ST, especially in the fun stuff...
60 mph (indicated) and about 3.1-3.2K,,,we're in 5.th. :D

Mine has a 6th gear. It's there you just have to keep searching for it! :D :D :D

It's OK to search for 6th - the problems start when you find it  .

Earplugs.

I still look for #6 from time to time. However, I like the idea about staying in 4th longer...

Finally paid real close attention to speedo and tach and the relationship between each while in 5th (mostly I ride based on the speed of the vehicles around me - gets me in trouble if there are no other vehicles - man, this bike wants to go fast!). Things I noticed:
1) the tach seems to be about 30 degrees lower than the speedo (if you overlayed the indicators). I don't know if this is the same for all models (i.e. PanEuropean) of ST1300.
2) When the tach (mine, at least) is on the exact 0's & 5's (30,35,40,45etc), the speedo is on 5's as well(55,65,75,85,etc). For every 5k increase in RPM, I get a 10mph increase. This won't help the chaps in the UK or the blokes down under, but for my fellow US riders, it might work. Or is everybody's ST different? :D

Doesn't matter, I would look for 7th if I had 6
Then again I reach for the clutch pedal in my automatic truck :D

I seem to have problems in both directions. I find myself running in 4th for a few miles and suddenly discover it (make embarrassing shift up). Then while in 5th I look for 6th. Aaarggh.
It would be nice to have wider-ratio gears and a reverse, tho. Does anybody make different gearing?

After similar miscues... 5 months into my Quick-n-Quiet '03...
I have learned to quickly scan speedo & tach for comparison....
At or just above 50mph.... and making +/- 3000 turns... I am in 5th....
Noticeably higher turns at that speed..... 3400... or so....
I am still in 4th...
When I try to rely on feel & sound alone..... I also go fishing...
Great day.... Ride safe!
