View Full Version : Northeast?

Every year a life-long buddy of mine and I take a 4 or 5 day trip, usually south. This year he's going out west for 3 weeks with his brothers, so I am going it alone this year. Thought I would head in another direction.
I'd like to do a 1600ish mile loop from Pittsburgh PA to possibly include Vermont and New Hampshire. Just wondering if anyone had any recommendations on roads etc. Not sure when I am going, sometime between now and September.
On the bike, I'm anti-tourist, I'd much rather take the road less traveled and don't really intend to see any tourist spots. Wouldn't mind stopping to see some moose though.
Any recommendations?

John, PM me your # and a good time to call when you will have 20-30 minutes with some maps in hand... lots of less traveled roads to point you to :D

Lots of great ideas for the Northeast! For starters, check out this article (written by your humble scribe Bones) which give you a good route through Western Massachusetts
http://webpages.charter.net/scottawilliams/westmass.htm
If you get Rider magazine, there's another of my articles on Vermont in the July issue (on newstands now!)
You'll find lots of great riding in New Hampshire especially from the White Mountains regions and north. Ride the Kancamagus Highway (NH112), NH16 north through Berlin and NH26 through Dixville Notch. Once GRN picks up on this thread I'm sure he'll offer you more ideas on NH.
Carl_T will have some ideas on the Adirondacks region of NY. Search the DackSTOC thread for Carl's route suggestion, which we did most of during the rally in May.
Let us know when you're coming this way and maybe we can hook up for a section of your ride.
P.S. Well, GRN beat me to the draw!
P.P.S. If you're coming from Pittsburgh, see if you can drag STeelerFan along with you !

Alright guys, don't say it unless you mean it :D
Bones, I'll read your web page and grab a copy of rider magazine.
GRN, I will PM you, but I need to get state maps first. I have ordered some, but haven't received them yet. Maybe over the weekend. And thank you for the offer.
I will definately let you guys know when I am coming through. When is the best time of year anyway? Better to wait until fall (less vacationers)? Otherwise, I was thinking of late July/Early August.
It would be nice to hook up. I have not met anyone on this board yet.

PS - STeelerFan, ya listening?
John, fall is the best up here IMO... fall in the NE is what has brought me back twice. Why not consider coming up for NNESTOC, it alone will likely cover some of NH & VT's finest, and in very good company. Just don't bring your wife, Bones will put all kinds of crazy ideas in her head... instant slavery for you! If you don't believe me, just ask STeve :p:
If you're ordering maps, throw Maine in the mix too.

144 and/or 44 in central PA, they run mostly north/south. That whole area is great. 287 is just east of the other two routes, and is great if you like higher speed sweepers. 144/44 are tighter, and have almost zero traffic (and police).
Once you get beyond PA, running anywhere around the Catskill or Adirondack mountain regions are both great areas.

John,
Welcome! We are only 60 miles from each other (Practically next door neighbors on the ST). We need to try and meet sometime. I get to Pittsburgh quite often, and almost always on the ST. Bob, from Kittanning also has an St (blue 2004, the fastest:duck:), maybe we can get him to meet up with us also.
Greg and Bones gave you some great advice. I would recommend the fall, and you should try and make CT-STOC or NNESTOC. You will not find a nicer group of riders and you will definitely have a great time. If you do CT-STOC, you can take a few extra days and see the rest of New England. And you can probably convince some of the guys to be your personal tour guide. Maybe you can follow Greg to New Hampshire on the way to his home. I have never seen a moose in the wild, but I understand Greg sees them in his backyard.
I hope to do CT-STOC again this year (I will not be bringing any Yuengling since it is available locally:) ), but can't commit until the last minute. My work schedule is hectic, and I am spending a lot of time in Chicago.
There is chance that I will be in northern New Jersey during the days before CT-STOC. If so, I hope to meet up with Steve and ride up to CT-STOC (It's still too early to tell).
And, if my schedule works, I would be willing to take a few extra days and tour some other areas of New England. Bones just had an article published in "Rider" magazine about Vermont covered bridges. It sounds like a great ride and I would sure like to do that ride sometime.
Send me an email. I am tied up through the next two weeks, but could meet in Pittsburgh in the second half of July if you are interested.

And all of this right in my back yard!
Lots of good roads in the area, but do be careful of deer, anytime, day or night. I really wouldn't recommend this area at night. Other thing, if at all possible, avoid it on week-ends, especially holiday week-ends. Too many flatlanders with their ATV-boat-camper hooked to the pickup clogging up the roads. Let me know if you need more roads.

Hey Bruce, a lot the same here... work, facelift on new home in progress, and my soon to be 3 yr. old little girl leave little time for the bikes and flyrods. Won't be long and I'll probably have a change in the work scene, house will be done, and the little one won't be so little that she can join me in some of the other things... but I'm not in a hurry man, I like her just the way she is :D
I doubt I'll be able to do the CT gathering... with some luck I'll be doing my MSF Instructor training. Any chance you'll bless us with BLUE for NNESTOC?
Oh, and Moose... when was the last time you saw a small Moose? I think they are born as a size L, and work their way up to 11XL! I have seen more than I care to... none too close though - just knocked on wood.
Be good Brother

Starting to put my trip together. I've read the article posted above, and read the "White Mountain Notches" thread by Meister, and Carl_T's New York suggestions as well as some others. Putting all this together, I think I'll have a nice 5-day loop from Pittsburgh, PA.
Quick question - I was thinking maybe I should head up to Pittsburg NH to take a run up "Moose Alley" (sure like to see a moose). Is it worth it, or should I just stay and hit more roads around the White Mountain area?
-John
John,
That run up through the lakes on rte 3 to the border is real nice man - likely to see all kinds of things as long as you're not in mid day high sun. From 2nd CT lake up to the border, be mellow. Moose don't look like they are running fast, and sometimes the math/realization that their legs are 5' long can come a bit late. The road signs say "Break for Moose, it could save your life!"... there's little fiction to that :22yikes:
Let me know when you're planning on being up... maybe able to hook up for a few miles.

AAHHH Mosse Alley...Remember that Greg??? What a great time..
John, worth it..
Greg and I did that and camped out there...The STARS were so incredible.!!! It was so romantic Hee hee :scared2: :box1: :a13: :Chair1: (Sorry Could not help it LOL)
Seriously though..take Greg's advice and go at a snails pace up there..
We did see a moose when we made a run to the border. WE went in the evening on a Sat night and the cars were crawling along looking for moose (I guess there is nothing better to do in Pittsburgh NH on a Sat Night:eek: ) so just settle yourself into the same pace..You'll know there is a moose when there a bunch of cars pulled over..
Bring the camera and enjoy..
Let us know when you are going.

Thanks Guys.
I got lucky and beat a deer on the ST, I really doubt I could come out on top with a moose. I just want to see one, I don't want to taste it :D
Right now I am figuring for the end of August/Beginning of September (The end of September is not working out). Trying to figure out how many days I will need to go where I want to go, and exactly where I want to go. Lot's of great suggestions to sort through.....
I'll let you guys know.
