View Full Version : I Demand Dunlop Elite 3...

I want a high mileage tire for my goofy 17 inch back rim.

We got our choice of all manor of gummy, grippy, canyon carving, low mileage tires like BattleAxes, Hot Shot Pilots, Road Rage Specials, Snake Bite Venoms, Sneak Attacks, ZZZ-6, Rash Makers, Never-Catch-Me Meats, Track Masterson and many others.
But for those of us that lay down long distances on the interstates are apparently out of options.

I ran the Elite 2 on my other bikes and got great mileage. And now Dunlop has made the Elite 3 better in the wet and corners, and increased the mileage even more. My Goldwing buddies love the tire, and I think we should have the option of running this tire too. Not for everyone of course, but I think there is a market for our size.

What do ya think? Should we flood Dunlop with vaguely threatening emails and phone calls til we get what we want?
Are we gonna let some Corporation simply ignore the ST1300 community?
I say No Way!

Slap on a Metzler ME880 on the rear for mileage.

I called Dunlop's Consumer Affairs Dept and spoke with a very nice gal.

I told her I have an ST1300, and I wanted a high mileage tire. Specifically, the Elite 3 Radial. She took my bike info and my name, and wrote down my comments requesting a high mileage interstate tire for sport/touring bikes.

She said they take comments and requests seriously, and at the end of the month, they present the requests to management and marketing at a meeting in NY City.

If you would like to add your voice to mine, call her at:
1-800-845-8378,
or online at: http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/contact.asp

The dept manager is Allen Wittemeyer, and will be listening to consumers at the Honda HomeComing and elsewhere this summer.

I know from the polls that have been posted here, and all the threads concerning tire wear and prices, that there must be many riders that would like to make their voices heard directly to the people at Dunlop who would be willing to market a mileage tire, if there was a groundswell of interest.

Or do you like buying a new tire every 9 months?
Jefro.

The 1ST year I had this ST I bought an 880 and a front tire every 3 months!

I've been pestering Dunlop with phone calls for a few months now about the high mileage tire they have for the Wing, but don't make for the ST.

Well, I got a call from the dept manager who said "we don't make the Elite 3 for your bike, and we don't have any plans to do so, so stop calling."

Fargin Bastages!!

The 1ST year I had this ST I bought an 880 and a front tire every 3 months! I just put a Z6/880 combo on today replacing the same after 17,000 in 4+ months. I had the OEM Dunlops and didn't replace with Dunlops due to the excessive cupping on the front by 15,000. However, if they'd fix that and get me more miles, I'd switch (and I followed the posted link and told them). Oh, and I wonder if they'll catch that my last name is also Dunlop... (I doubt that it will influence them.:D)

Do what I did and put a GL1500 _wheel_ on the back. Works for the 1100 anyway. I think I have an Elite 3 on there now, would have to go check, tho. Been so long since I put it on that I can't remember. :D

So

I am not the first, but I do not like Dunlops, have not liked them in the past am not likely to like them in the future.

ME880 actually looks like a MC tire, runs about 2/3 of a gazillion miles, and doesn't cup out!

I thought they only made it in the 18 inch rim size. How you getting that on a 17 inch wheel? Then again, maybe the 1100 is a different size.

I have E2s on my Vulcan, and they've been great. Maybe just their sport tires stink?

I'v got the OEM bridgestone tires on my ST. in 9 weeks I'v put on 6200 miles, front tire still looks new, the back tire looks like it may go another 6200, guess. I wouldnt say I baby it, but at the same time I dont dog it either. if I can get 10k or better outa the bridgestones I'l stick with'em

You must be getting different ME880's than I was. I never got more than 10K miles out of any of the three rear ME880's I ran, and I never had one run longer than the Dunlop D220's I was matching with them on the front.

Oh, and did I mention they made the ST1100 handle like a truck, and that they're not ideal in the rain?

I think there's an ME880 that's made especially for the BMW 1200 light truck, maybe that's the one people are getting good mileage out of.

Meanwhile, I'll stick to the Avons, the mileage seems to be the same and they handle and ride way better.

The only way I'd put another ME880 on the bike is if I was going to Alaska again, one thing they do have is a very heavy carcass, better to protect against sharp rock hits.

But the ones I used sure as heck didn't qualify as a higher mileage tire....

Obviously, YMMV...

Should'a said GL 1500 _wheel_. It's a 16 incher and the Elite 3 comes in the correct size. I'll edit my original post.

Thanks,

Did you notice I didn't go into handling? I do feel the ME880 rear is a step up from the Dunlop Elite Series, but not so much.

Rain? I live in Yuma, we are in a severe drought, means we don't even get our <2" anually. I have ridden ME880 in the rain, but on a heavier bike, they did ok by me....

All that said, I have an Avon Storm on the front now, and will match it on the rear sometime after 666SToc. Clearly a superior tire combo.
