Do my HT over mesh pants offer more protection than blue jeans? I am interested in opinions on the topic but I am more interested in factual based studies. I know that there are lots of riding pants that offer more protection than jeans or the over mesh but I am interested in comparing the two. Now that it’s hot I sometimes where my over mesh with shorts and Under Armor. I am wondering if I would be just as well off with Levis.
Thanks,
Mike

I wear mesh overpants with cotton pants underneath...with this combination I don't feel as much heat coming off the bike as when just wearing shorts under the mesh.

I wear Levis to work... or shorts with mesh over. I have a pair of Duluth Trading denim w/ kevlar that are supposed to be 6x stonger than denim alone for abrasion. I think denim alone is better than nothing... mesh a step above... then you get into cords and kevlar

Depends on if you have any armor in the mesh over-pants? I don't wear my Olympia Moto Sports Airglide 2 Mesh Pants on my commute to work but I do wear them on the long weekend rides. I wear them with jeans under them so I have the armor in the mesh and the extra skin protection of the levis.
Good reading from the FWIW dept.......

Well, since jeans offer basically no protection, I think anything must be an improvement... (Bad news for the jeans & leather jacket crowd, I know!)

Think of it this way...
Take a 4inch grinder... Rap it out to 20,000 rpm... Now,,, which would you rather in an accident apply the grinding wheel to???
# 1 ~~~ A pair of Levis right on the knee cap...
# 2 ~~~ A pair of Hein Gericke Cargo mesh Pants with armor on the Knee cap...
Go ahead,,, take your time,,, and then decide...

Terry, do you have any feedback on how these compare to the Firstgear HT Air Overpants or Tourmaster "Air Overpant"? Thanks!

Terry,
No disrespect, but I doubt ANY riding pants would survive a 4" grinder @ 20,000rpm. Why? Because it work out to about 238MPH.

I was told at the Experienced Rider Course that regular (not kevlar) jeans are good for about 50 inches of sliding. hmmmmm.
So if 60 MPH is about 88 feet per second, then the levis will go in how much time? ..... ok, about .0473484 second.

I got a pair a couple of months ago....I love 'em. I wear them over my jeans every time I ride.....they seem a little more sturdy than my friends Joe Rocket "phoenix" pants....of course YYMV.
I wore them on a recent trip to VA/WV from CT, in 96 degrees with high humidity and it wasn't so bad. "I'd rather sweat than bleed."
Oh, BTW, I got them at new enough.com

Hi,
Got mine at Newenough also, wear them over shorts, a little cooler than jeans, alot more protection, however with same boots, feel the ankle heat more, just slide that right foot out to the end of the peg.
