My current lid is a KBC VR-1.

My response to the poll was honest--both DOT and Snell--but I'm not sure it addressed the core question. You see, if it were DOT only, I would've bought the same, especially after the June 2005 Motorcyclist article.

This helmet was the most affordable with the features I required: DOT, interchangeable (inc. tinted) shields, and removable/washable liner.

I know plenty of people think that they aren't worth anything, but if you go down on your head, I'd rather have it than not. I love the fact that I can wear it all season, and even in traffic I don't get too hot.

In colder months I'll wear a HJC 3/4 with a full shield. Not a big fan of full face, as I chew gum a lot, and it's hard to do with the full face on.

Go ahead, flame away. I've got my fire proof underware on.

I'd go with yes. That's the class that industry testing puts them in.
I rock a HJC Symax daily. I will always have a flip face helmet in my line-up.

if you ride with the flip up, "flipped up", then it's a 3/4....if you ride with it flipped down, then it's a full face.....thoughts?

So about 97% of us ride with a full face helmet. Sounds like a pretty smart crowd here.

Hmm, those numbers add up to more than 100%. That's interesting. I suppose some people use more than 1 helmet type, but I still wonder about the math.

Great lid.
Given the poll options, I placed this under full face DOT, since Snell has not tested flip ups.

Didn't really see a category for my modular (flip-face) helmets?!?

I have an older HJC Symax --
and a brand new Caberg Justissimo.

By design -- I am informed... The modulars may be DOT rated, but none of them meet the frontal impact criteria for the SNELL sticker.

Thanks... Ride safe!

HJC SYMAX in Pearl white
HJC 1/2 with leather neck and ear covers.
The Symax is very noisy, but nice for quick stops, the half skid is much more quiet.
I've been shopping Shoei and Arai. Can't decide!
Hey, none of the avitars have skid lids!

I currently have 4 helmets, always wear one. I buy a new HJC or ZR about once a year, and throw away the oldeST one. I'd rather wear a new $160 helmet than an old $500 helmet.

I have an HJC Symax. But I understand that they are not Snell approved because it is a flip up. Not that it matters to me. DOT is sufficient.

NEXL Sports 1/2 for around town and longer days (it's VERY light and keeps the arthritis flare-ups in neck and back to a minimum - also fits very well and doesn't parachute)

Pearl White Shoei Syncrotec - great helmet but after about three hours my neck starts to complain

I know, I know, 1/2 helmets don't offer as much protection but the NEXL is so comfortable I forget I have it on. More importantly (being in Arizona - no helmet required), it's comfortable enough to wear no matter what and no matter how short the trip.

I've also had the misfortune to crash test one of these in a 45 mph crash (infamous left turner - in this case the cager ignored a fully dressed police motor with lights and siren - their excuse was that they were in a hurry and didn't want to wait for the funeral to pass by). So, my duty helmet got a work out while I played crash-test dummy. The paint got scraped but the shell was unscathed and the foam core did it's job.

Caberg Justissimo Flip-up.

Between the flip-up feature and the integral sunshield, I'll never go back to a regular helmet.

Icon Alliance Primary, silver over black. Bought new in '03, but have recently noticed on longer rides (anything over an hour) that helmet begins to take on characteristics of very effective wood clamp. Which brings me to:

Q: How often do you/we replace our lids? How often should we? (yeah, I know, if it hurts your noggin, get a new one now!)

Thanks,

Shoei Z-II, which wears (fortunately) the only scars from my wife dumping my bike in the driveway by backing into it with her car :spank1:

It was about 3 weeks ago, and I screamed NOOOOOO as she put her car in reverse and I saw the bike fall over. Fortunately it skidded down the fence and came to a gentle rest, but did so on my helmet which is perennially perched on the sissy bar on my pristine '82 Suzuki GS850GL. I waxed it out the best I could, but I just tell myself rather that than the bike.

No other damage than a broken mirror, but I was not very pleased that day......

I had a KBC and now a Caberg Justissimo ( aka Jarow ). I really like KBC's, both KBC and the Justissimo meet the European ECE 22-05 standards. This is something I now prefer over Snell. Oh yeah, the most KBC models meet all three standards, have better than average quality, and aren't a lot of money.
