For me personally, the following will be my route.....well most likely but this is going to be my vacation so I reserve the right to change my mind at any time..

Ride through the Texas Hill country and join 281 to Wichata Falls then 287 - 87 - 385 - 87 to clayton, NM (I will be meeting G-Man there for the rest of the way....I may stop in Amarillo for the night first...just depends on how the day is going) from clayton most likely 64 to 25 into the Denver metro area unless another route looks better on day two....gotta have fun

Departing Saturday morning and plan on arriving in Golden Sunday afternoon to evening time frame.

Doesn't help you much coming from California....but you asked

My route is pretty set, of course always subject to change. I am not sure yet which day I am leaving...I'd like to get in early to ride Mt. Evans before they close it.

Route from Phoenix area:

I-17 North to
89 to
160 into Kayenta (Reservation), then
163 through Mexican Hat/Monument Valley area, then
407 or 41 (Colorado)
160 to
550 into Ouray for an overnight
50 East to
285 (through Fairplay) and
into Golden

I'm at work so I don't have maps...just going from memory.
Don't forget to order your t-shirts before the deadline !!!!

This will be my first excursion to the East on the ST and not even sure if I can get away but would like to hook up with someone from the So CA area and talk about what their plans are and perhaps I can hitch along with them.
If I was able to get away, I would likely be continuing on to TN before returning home. Don't know if anyone is coming from that area that I could ride with on to TN.
Lemme know.
Thanks

Haven't really decided on a route to WESTOC yet, but would like to head basically north, do some WY/MT, then drop back down into CO. Did the catty-corner route from Kingman to Avon laST month, so sump'in different would be good.

Also, how about the route from WESTOC to NatSTOC? I haven't even looked at a map yet.

One of my favorite route plans is to draw a STraight line between 2 points then try to STay as close to that line as pavement and prudence will allow. I've gotten into some unique spots following this plan.

We are looking at taking I-80 to I-40. Slab the first day with a little fun on the second day.

We're looking forward to riding the roads of the area. That should be some good fun.

Just a heads up on MT Evans... serious pavement damage a Summit Lake. the rangers warned us of it last month but it was worse than expexted. 1-2 foot heaves and the edges are broken up. One of the guys at our HSTA ride lost control and side swiped a car :( (what I heard). The view from the top is worth it though.

Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't heard the reports on road conditions up there but sounds like I may be scrapping the idea of Mt. Evans.

This will assist my decision of when to leave. Appreciate it.

I-10, turn Left.....El Paso turn Left again :D

Just kiddin....

I am thinking I am going to leave on the 31th from lafayette and head towards Amarillo via Dallas on 287. Pick up I-40 to Santa Rosa NM and then see how I feel. (921 mile day)

On the 1st pickup 550 through Durango to Ouray to Montrose. (Yes I know I know I passed up Golden but I want to get back to the West side of CO for a day kick around some more.) 435 mile day

I will be staying at the Canyon Trails Inn again, great place to base in Montrose.

Spend the second riding either 141 again or up into the passes. Spend night in Montrose again.

Rob has the room reservation for Westoc and has planned to get there Sunday so I am thinking leaving Montrose in AM, and some route that heads East again to the meet, maybe towards Leadville and then cut over to the Springs.

post meet I am Gonna head to AR. for Natstock over 2 days, probably through Tulsa and see my sister.

Which road did you take from the 15? I see that you leave the freeway for a while..I'll probably go out 14 to Mojave, then over to Barstow on 58. Anything to avoid as much of the 15 traffic as I reasonably can. My last Death Valley trip I came back on 15, and cut over to Palmdale via 138. I didn't appreciate 15!;)

In Utah - pick a road - any road - off of 15 and I'm sure I won't be disappointed.

Now that I-27 from the south side of Lubbock to the north is usable, getting thru that gosh awful red light every block, all synchronized to be sure you can never "make" more than 2, is history if going up across the "big nothing" on US 84. There's a loop completely around the town, going NW, take I-27 on the south side of town, go north to the loop on the north side, then west back to US 84...

My.. If I get to go will be, U-190 LivTX to Huntsville, TX 30 to Brian, TX 21 to Bastrop, TX 71 to Brady, US87 to Eden, US83 to Ballinger,TX 153/70 to Sweetwater, I-20 to Roscoe, US 84 Lubbock (bypass town) US 85 all the way to Santa Rosa, NM, from there... unsure.. Used to live in Las Vegas, NM want to call on some friends there and some in Albuquerque.(But Steve and Linda will be at WeSTOC)...but just getting out of Texas is the major part of the trip... "The sun is riz, soon the sun will set, and we ain't outta Texas yet." It may be, according to the old song, "A long way to Tippawarrii (sp?)" but it's further from SE TX to NM for sure.

When I lived Las Vegas and Albuquerque, this is the route I found to be the best between the Houston area and points northwest. Mostly very rural, good roads, well maintained, little traffic, Tax Collectors rare.

Like Rob said! I am leaving the morning of the first and going up i-49 to I-20, then cut up to Amarillo , finish up the Friday at Santa Rosa NM.

Gonna meet Rob in Santa Rosa NM on Saturday AM.
Haul up 550 through Durango to Silverton to Montrose. Black Canyon of the Gunnison that afternoon.
Trying to get a reservation at Canyon Trails Inn for Saturday night.

Sunday AM out of Montrose up 141 through Gateway and up to Delta. The across the state to Golden via some cool route, maybe I-70, maybe Aspen through Independence Pass and across to Colorado Springs. Rob set up the rooms in Golden starting Sunday.

I want high mountain passes and such for the rides out of Golden....Depart Golden on the 7th and head east for Eureka Springs. Probably go to Tulsa, spend the night with my sister and then meet Al in AR on the 8th.

Al set us up at the Hotel in Eureka Springs so I will not be camping...:)

Louie,

You had asked earlier about a town to stay in Utah, but I did not know where in general you were going. I just looked at your map, and I would have recommended Torrey.

But now I see you want to stay in St. George and hit Zion. Fine plan. St. George is probably going to be as hot as Palm Springs, though. If you want to find a place that's a bit cooler, I'd recommed staying in Cedar City. And that would enable you to hit Cedar Breaks and go thru Panguitch and hit Zion and Bryce, etc.

Plenty of decent places to stay in both St. George and Cedar City. If you do spend the night in Torrey, I like the Chuck Wagon Inn, and I highly recommend the Cafe Diablo. You can get rattlesnake there! Details on both places can be found here (http://www.torreyutah.com/eatsleep.phtml).

See you in Golden!

BTW, according to http://www.nps.gov/zion/pphtml/planyourvisit.html you'll have to park and take a shuttle bus to see Zion Canyon, although the Route 9 highway is open to thru-traffic. They don't mention exceptions for motorcycles.

I'm a little more inclined to skip Zion Canyon and visit the Kolob Canyon end off of 15. Avoid the RV traffic.

Then on to Cedar Breaks, Bryce, Escalante, Burr Trail (pavement section only!), Torrey, etc. My only trouble is figuring out where to stop - I might have to do that little mom&pop Circle-D Motel in Escalante if I can't get up to Torrey in that first day past Saint George (or Cedar City). It's not so much the miles as the time for stopping and taking pictures.;)

I stayed in Cedar City before heading up to Cedar Breaks two summers ago. I could not believe how nice the people in Cedar City & most of Utah are. Hotel, restaurant, gas station & even convenience store workers collectively, were the nicest, most helpful people with the best attitudes that I have encountered while traveling.

The view from the visitor center at Cedar Breaks is just awesome! There are quite a few roads & sites in Brice, Last visit I was sad that I did not plan enough time to ride & see all of them. The ride through Capital Reef is also very inspiring.... Riding Utah is almost spiritual.

You might check out the I40 route. Even though there might be more traffic, moving trucks are much better than stopped trucks. I've noticed a new game for truckers when they come to a constution zone they block the right and left lanes so no car traffic can get thru. One area had traffic backed up 10 miles. Good luck.

UTAH Heads up for those of you travelling through ...

A couple of you are heading through northern UT via I-80 and then Hwy 40 into CO. If you're planning to find a hotel in Vernal UT (thats on the east side) make your reservatinos now as you're likely NOT to find a hotel there. Lots of oil exploration and drilling going on there and the workers have all the hotels tied up. Damn near immpossible to get a hotel room in Vernal. You can stay in SLC, Park City, or Heber City ... which are about the only places to stay other than Vernal. Roosevelt has some small hotels but can be iffy.

If your route is I-80 and Hwy 40, and you're into a small detour that will give you a FUN ride and only take you a little out of your way ... Take I-80 up Parley's Canyon and past Park City. Exit onto Hwy 40. At Exit 4 go east toward Kamas. In Kamas, make a right toward Francis (about 1-2 miles). Make a left onto Hwy 35, more commonly referred to as Wolf Creek Pass. Nice fun twisty road, gets you up nice and high, GREAT sweepers. ONce you come down and pass the town of Tabiona you'll go another 10-20 miles, make a right onto Hwy 208 and you'll be back on Hwy 40 after about 10 or so miles. it's a nice little detour since the rest of 40 until you hit Steamboat is BORING. Then again, I-80 from Reno till Elko is deadly boring ...

If you're coming I-80 let me know, I may be able to hook up with you and ride with you for a while. I am unable to make WESTOC but live just south of SLC and would gladly give some company.

For those of you taking the southern route through UT ... you can take I-15 to I-70 if time/speed is your goal. It's boring slab and you'll run into construction periodically ... then again, this IS summer and the season of orange cones so ... anyway ... if you're up for an alternate more scenic ride, as already suggested head to Cedar City and take Hwy 148 up to Cedar Breaks NM. FUN road, 10,000 feet high, clear air, great scenery. Take 143 from there toward Panguitch (Best Western Hotel there is decent). From Panguitch, head south 7 miles and take Hwy 12 to Torrey UT. VERY scenic and wickedly FUN road!!! From Torrey you can head north east and pick up I-70.

If you're going to be in Cedar City, then I'll recommend Cedar Breaks Nat'l Monument as a Must See. Fun road, great site. Then down to panguitch and over to Bryce. Can easily be done in a day, 2 if you're into hiking. travel East past Bryce, down the hill (fun hill) for a nice little scenic hike. Make sure you ride Hwy 12 when you're heading out, fantastic road.

Well, I finally figured out a round trip route to WeSTOC and return. At least it doesn't have any freeway riding involved except a little bit on the way home in Utah where it pretty much can't be avoided. It is, of course, subject to change.

If anyone's interested in hooking up along the way, give me a holler. I'm leaving here on Thursday morning, will be in Cedar City Utah Thursday night. I have a guest room for anyone who wants to stay at my place Wednesday night.

Hey Louie, I'm staying at the Econo Lodge, I think it's on the other side of Denny's. Carlton Inn didn't have any non-smoking rooms left.

Maybe we can get together for dinner Thurs eve?

I gotta work Thu and Fri, otherwise I'd ride down to meet you two ... bummer really. Damn this state for not having a Lotto or Powerball ...

Make sure to visit Cedar Breaks NM, I really like it htere. IT hits 10,000 feet so if you do it on a cool morning, be prepared for the temps to drop some.

Are you taking Hwy 12 east???

Don-STOC237
08-28-2006, 10:22 PM
Looking at my mapsource routing, it appears I'm starting from Cedar City by taking 14 to the east, then hitting every twisty road I can find to Durango and then to Gunnison via a bunch of backroads, and whatever other trouble I can get into on the way to arrive in Golden on Sunday afternoon. Should be interesting.

Why don't you just blow off work and join up? Frankly, I hear you've been feeling a little under the weather. :D

WeSTOC is gonna be great this year!

yup, it's on the schedule.

Put on new tars today with only a moderate amount of cussing and swearing and no back spasms.

Also bought a new tankbag, I was long overdue for one. So, I'm about ready to go!

See you there!

Don, be aware that SR-90 is several miles of graded gravel, ungraded gravel, and just plain dirt over the top. Doable but slow.

Worth it for the views, in my opinion.

not going to WeSTOC ....

it was always a bit of a gamble, but I've decided shorter rides w/o the bags is the thing for me ... you all have fun now ... and there's no way I'm doing any gravel, no sirree bob.

(pssst ... the Victoria Blues Festival is on that weekend ... shhhhhhh! )

:D

yes, I've started to play guitar too ...

No, I can't bring mine since it would require an amp as well. (Although an acoustic bass is on my list). And I'm merely annoying on an acoustic 6 string.

But I'll probably bring some samples of my bands recordings for camp fire stuff or hotel, or whatever.

STPilot needs to bring his stuff so I can play on it. :)

Just an FYI - I've listened to a couple of recordings of Doob and his band. First rate stuff! Give it a listen. They're good!

hey, Doob !

is that short for Doobie Bros. ... ??

picked up a nice used Epiphone nylon sting acoustic .... new strings going on soon but the ones it had are still pretty good !

I tend to like (for my playing) some Neil Young, some Johnny Cash, some other older acoustic rock stuff, 3 or 4 chords if possible ... :D

I just mastered the intro riff to Heart of Gold ! ... piece of cake, Em and a D at the end .... yeah baby !!!!

You all have fun at the SToc ... looks like my time off is gone ... :( ... oh well there's a TON of Rock and Blues waiting to be played .... :D

Not quite, but close. I love this thread.

http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=4026&page=3&highlight=handle

I need to go see the new additions.

I'm in about the same boat with the Acoustic guitar, just enough to support a campfire song (as long as someone tells me the progression).

Bass guitar is a different story...anything by Rush is fun to play. The crazier the time signature and rhythm, the more fun it seems to be. Other bands I like to listen to are a bit weird, but the music is intense: Dream Theater, Gordian Knot, Queensryche, Pink Floyd, etc... Progressive Rock tends to appeal to musicians mostly.

Saturday:
Rain likely. High near 70F. Winds NNE at 10 to 15 mph. Chance of rain 80%. Rainfall around a quarter of an inch.

Well, I'm officially out of here for WeSTOC - first stop Amarillo.

Last night I tried to run the Garmin 2610 cable under the tank and must have pinched someting as the GPS doesn't work. So much for all the rooute planning. I'm taking it and the cable in the off chance there is a cable genius at WeSTOC who might be reading this.

BTW, i checked out the 2610 with my cage cable and it is working - has to be the motorcycle cable (probably; I could have missed something).

Anyway, see y'all at WeSTOC, assuming I can find it on a paper map. :D
