I'm embarassed to say that I never served, while many of my generation served and sacrificed in Vietnam. However, I'm very much in awe and appreciative of our brave young men and women who are now serving our country during these turbulent times.
(I was a Navy brat who at 10 years old was dragged off to live in Turkey, where my Dad was likely involved in cold war era activities for the government. Different type of service though.)

Yep, I eventually volunteered for world wide duty also. Could have gone anywhere there was an airstrip. I also volunteered for all the unaccompanied tours - Thule, the Aleutians, Vietnam, etc. (you had to know my ex-wife to understand why) and was turned down.
Good old 702nd Tactical Air Support Sqdn (FAC) was a good place to work if you had to spend four years somewhere.

The 'Dream Sheet' treated me pretty well.
Out of tech school in 89, I had the usual first choice of Hawaii, second England, third Europe. I landed at Ramstein AB, Germany. I now highly recommend Ramstein as an assignment.
After 2 years in Germany, my Dream Sheet still listed Hawaii, then Williams AFB in Mesa, Arizona, followed by Arizona in general. I landed at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson, Arizona. Met my wife and had our children there.
The USAF has been good to me. But members also need to look after themselves, their families, and their careers.

US Navy - '65 to '93. My son is currently a USMC senior drill instructor at Parris Island, SC after serving as a helicopter crew chief in Columbia (drug war), Somalia, Afghanistan, and Iraq. I'm kinda proud of him.
And you should be....nothing like a Crew Chief to mold the recruits and I have a special love for any of the chopper crews, Marine/Army, they more then once snatched my butt from harms way (of course they were also the transportation that put me in the thick of it, but no matter!).
Also, Thank You, for your service. 65-93, if you had sea duty you probably were off the coast in the gulf. You were either pressing the fire release button or one of the thousands of sailors supporting those who were. The only artillery I trusted to call "fire-for-effect" without a spotter round came from the sea....Thank You and Thank All the Sailors.

Draft number in 1973 was #327. I did not go, but was raised in Bremerton, Washington where the Puget Sound Navel Shipyard, Keyport Underwater Warfare, and Trident Missile Base are all located. I worked at PSNS for several years and got a sincere appreciation for the folks that served.
When I grew up in the 60s there was a siren that blew every Wednesday at 11am to commence the infamous air raid warning. Given that we were one of the top three targets for the soviets on the west coast we knew we had no chance of survival.

Actually, I know it's a long shot, but is there anyone here (or does anyone know anyone in your life) who is both a Vietnam Vet, and an Iraq vet?
I bumped into a Master Gunnery Sergeant who served in both wars, but I never got to ask him about the parallels (if any) between the two conflicts.

Y'all still had split ends in 69 and 70? Alot of the new guys in 68 had the new suppressors, but they were probably issued in Okinawa. I have a 4 pack of Pall Mall left from 1967. Remember trying to cover all the holes in the paper so you could light those old cigarettes? LOL!! There was only one guy in my company that carried a gas mask and he used it to brew coffee under his poncho in the middle of the night. Man, that smelled good.

I served 20 years and 9 days active duty. From Sep 1959 to Sep 1979 and loved every minute of it. I would go back tomorrow if it were possible. Vietnam 1967 to 1968. Glad to see our servicemen and women returning safely from their tour abroad and I won't forget those who could not return safely.

Us Navy 1948 to 1950. Served on a destroyer DD 870. I got out just before Korea I had a kid and it changed my classification from 1A to 3a. I missed the war that a lot of my friends didn't. My ship hit a mine in the Engine & fire Room off of Korea. They limped back to Japan.

I was a dit chasin Radioman in the US Coast Guard from 1968 through 1975. Stationed on the Bering Straits of Alaska for a year, 18 months at sea aboard Cutter Sebago doing North Atlantic Ocean Stations, and several other exotic places in and around the nation where there are piers and people to pull from the water.
For those of you that may believe we Coasties are all sweetwater sailors... visit this page
http://www.roadsandriders.com/memorials/MI/CGCEscanaba.html
and then please pause a moment to remember 103 men from the Cutter Escanaba who did not return from their Atlantic patrol in 1943.
We all served and gave something - while others served and gave all.

I was exempt with some back thing while applying for OCS
in 1969...and have always felt grateful to the ones of you
who did serve.
I feel the same way about most public servants
with the exception of most of the AO's in DC for whom as a collective body I have the utmost contempt.....
Afraid I have read too many books.
reminds me of a quote....
If you are not a liberal in your twenties,
then you don't have a heart,
and if your not a conservative by your forties
you don't have a brain.....
Anyway...THANKS GUYS.
