Hey there,

If you have ever had the desire to try an endurance rally then come to Tomah, WI on August 26th. It will be a 6 hour rally and should be lots of fun. It's my first attempt at running a rally also. This is not a rally for people that have run a rally. This is for people who usually do poker runs on Saturdays. $10 for one up $15 for two up. One rally pack per vehicle. We will also be allowing cars to run this too since this is in conjunction with the car and bike show. All the proceeds go the Tomah VA Hospital Recreation Fund.

I'll attach a PDF of the flyer. They don't get any easier than this.

Email me if you have any questions.

The Texas attorney general has deemed this type activity illegal and he will hunt down any and all Texas residents that participate is these illegal activities.

It may sound funny but it's true Texas has outlawed Poker Runs/Rallies/anything that involves a prize at the end. Your gambling and we don't like it so cut it out.

When I was a kid the guy across the street from me did these things in a Triumph TR3 sports car. You think some of the rally bikes run gear they look like armatures to what the dash of this TR3 looked like. I went on several with him it was taken seriously but it was a lot of fun.

Can't cut into the blue haired ladies bingo profits  It just amazes me how backwards this state is sometimes... I still remember when we had Blue laws in effect... could buy a hammer, but not nails on Sunday... stupid stuff like that

So if you have an easter egg hunt with a chocolate bunny as a prize to the child who finds the most eggs that is illegal too? How is a rally considered gambling? It's a competition. Are chess tournaments illegal?

Crap! I've hijacked my own thead. ARRRRRRG! :th1:

When we had Blue Laws!!! We still do.

At least I can buy cloth kitchen towels on Sunday now

As far as the Easter egg hunt it is my understanding of the law that if you pay an entrance fee and there is a "prize of value" at the end it is illegal. The phrase "prize of value" was not addressed by the Attorney General but he gave fair warning he would pursue anyone charity or not that violated the law.

Ok, well all you get is a worthless plaque. So I think we're good. ;)

Gotta agree Paul, one guy I knew had LORAN and everything else set up
in his TR-3... They took their Rallys very seriously...

I'm still doing everything I can to make it to this rally, but I'm wondering if someone can fill me in on the elements of an endurance rally?

Not only am I considered a beginner, but I'm an ignorant newb as well. How does an endurance rally work? :shrug2:

Might be able to make this, so don't be suprised if Dan and I show up. This could be lots of fun.

Well since this one is so short in duration I wouldn't call it endurance but here's the general way it runs down.

You show up and register. Then there's usually a riders meeting to go over the rules etc. We will most likely be handing out a copy to everyone as well as cover them while everyone is there.

You will then be given a packet with bonus locations listed in the packet. Each one will have a point value. You evaluate all the bonuses and then decide on a route that will net you the most points for the time alloted. You must be back on time or you are out.

Pretty simple concept but you want to follow the rules. Does that answer your questions?

Actually, it answers them very well, thanks!

So...I show up at the rally, I get a packet, I analyze said packet, and pick my destinations in a manner that nets me the most points within the least time.

I assume there is something at each destination to prove that we arrived there? Do we need cameras or something? :shrug2:

Each bonus location will require you to answer a question correctly not only proving you were there but also that you have reading comprehension skills. :) We are not requiring cameras for this one because this is for people that want a taste of a rally. If we required cameras my fear would be that a lot of people would bail and we want as many people as we can get.

I hope to see a few guys come. This one should be a lot of fun.

Curt,

Not going to make this since I'm heading west on the 30th, hope you have a great turn out.

Also, its a bit late, but ya did good on Butt Lite. If I were 15 years younger, I would be trying it just to challenge myself. Be proud of what you did. Now, I want to hear the Waffle House story sometime. :D

"THANK YOU" goes out to Curt & Robecca for setting this thing up!!:yr1:
For anyone out there who has never done a rally,I highly recomend that you try one sometime,(this was a perfect one to start with;I hope there are more for beginners like me...)
First off, if you go riding and it gets a little boring after about 4 hours +... (this happens to me alot...) then a rally is the cure for that! This was a 6 hour rally. It could have easily gone to eight or more for me! it was alot of fun!:p:

Second,this a learning experience, (I learned that I'm an IDIOT!:o: )
aside from planning the route your gonna take...it usually helps if you make sure you don't miss any along the way! This is a little hard to explain....but out of the 30 + possible stops to choose from, it helps if you double check the entire list of all of them..., I rode right past a couple of stops and didnt even realize it till later (I could have used another 30 min. to read & plan more, Probley a little brain damage from all the alcohol abuse from my younger years...)
oh well...like I said, it was fun! Thats all I was looking for! It was my first but definitley not the last! the roads this rally were some of the best wisconsin has to offer! I've been on them many times before, and this type of ride gives new life to riding!
Thanks again to everyone who helped in puting this thing together!:bow1:
looking forward to the next one!

Hey there forgitaboutut - Curt and GARY deserve all of the credit. I was just a shameless rally groupie! :)

I am so glad to hear that you had fun. It is a mystery to me why more people don't ride rallies. CONGRATS on your great finish! :hotpepper

More rallies are listed on this site and it is updated all year long:

I was absolutely floored at how much fun the rally was. You all did a wonderful job at setting up a first rate event. As another newb who had never, ever done anything on this level (I'm ashamed to admit that I still haven't done a single IBA ride yet), this was such a great even to break into that I wouldn't have missed it for anything.

Marcus and I were having so much fun that we were, literally, giggling at ourselves as we went from point to point. We are definitely in for future events! The day was totally flying by, and the constant map-work really kept our minds into it.

Sadly, you may or may not know that I had to drop from the rally by about 1:00pm when Marcus' Gold Wing blew a head-gasket. We were up in Waupun, on our way to cleaning up the EASt ;) side waypoints and finishing the receipt collections for "PLATOON" when the gasket blew. He ended up staying overnightthere, while I turned the ST back to St. Paul to get a truck and trailer to bring his bike home for him.

To top it all off, Gary phoned me at home tonight just to check in on us and see that we got home alright! What a class act.

Thanks again. It was good to meet everyone, and you can count on seeing me again at future rallys. This one was enough to get me wanting more. :capwin:

Side note: Crazykz has a starfighter, not an ST1300. Boxergrrlie's BMW has "Cool" leaking out of it.

Thanks. We're both in one piece, but sitting in a truck for 8 hours with a motorcycle in the trailer behind it was a bit embarassing.

I'm glad you had time to make it to the rally. I wish we could have had a better turn out but I think everyone still had a great time. We all learned something about running a rally and so maybe the lower numbers was better for us.

I think everyone handle the planning well. Yes, Rich, even you. Plan your ride and ride you plan is something that is said quite a bit in rallies. Everyone needs to learn a system to process all of the bonuses.

Right now I believe we will do it again but it's up to Gary. We may move the weekend because of other events but other than that we'll leave it as is.

If you have any comments or suggestions let me know and we'll take them into consideration. If you had any problems with directions on any of the bonuses let me know that also and I'll make the corrections.

Thanks again to everyone that came. I had a great time also. We'll work on more rally groupies for next year. ;) I think there's a Hooters somewhere near by. :D
