First, I want to thank those of you who have written of your LD rides, equipment suggestions, etc. You've educated me and inspired me!

For my first LD ride, I thought Salisbury NC to Cleveland OH and back might be good. Mapquest indicates the ride at a little over 500 miles. Basically, I would follow Hwy 70 to Statesville, pick up I-77 N, follow it to Cleveland, turn around and come home. I know the scenery at the NC/VA border is nice - not sure about the rest.

I've never been to Cleveland, so I used Lake Shore State Park as the destination in MapQuest - 8701 Lake Shore Blvd. For the starting point, I'm using 936 Jake Alexander Blvd S, Salisbury. (Actually, that's a Waffle House. There's a gas station across the street.)

Another route would be to start at the same point, use I-85N to 52N to I-77 at Mt. Airy. Not sure what that mileage would be.

Weather allowing, I planning on going this Sunday. Current forecast is 30% chance of rain with scattered thunderstorms - I'm hoping for better!

Comments and suggestions would be appreciated!

Check the VA DOT web site before you leave. They were working on the I-77 tunnels between I-81 at Wytheville and the VA/WV state line. It was a real mess when I went through there two weeks ago on my way to Canada. You don't want to be sitting in stopped traffic if you're doing an IBA ride, although you can afford some "down time" on a SS1000. Good luck, and if this is your first, plan carefully and pace yourself -- remember, you can use the full 24 hours if you need it. Let us know how you make out.

I live in the Cleveland area and have done that run a few times. Scenery will be pretty nice right up to about Canton, Oh. It gets pretty much metro all the way to Cleveland.
Good luck,
Paul B

At work I'm not much help here, internet is somewhat resticted...but if you follow 534 north and stay north till you hit the lake you will be at Geneva on the Lake state park lodge(which by the way is almost brand new and a great place to spend a night or two) at the point the road goes right(east) to the strip ...Eddies is on the north side or your left...this is a covered open air place with the charm of the old Euclid beach park...you can even pick songs for a dime at your table while you eat the area is shared with a nice Dairy Queen....(don't tell mellow)....(just kidding)....looking up the DQ is how I will search later today at home..one last note If you like really good lemon aid get the food at Eddies and the drink from DQ...the root beer at Eddies is real good though!

:) I will post the address later today:)

The bike only parking is on the left of the building and in the back ...it is located on the Geneva on the lake strip lots of little shops, old rides, and has been like this for many years ....sitting next to the lake for probably 50 years plus!...when I was in my teens we would go down to cruise the strip...with all the little shops and things and people speeds on the strip goes between 10 to 15 mph...

Thanks for the offer! Tomorrow, I'm going to Knoxville to visit Mom in the hospital. Depending on how she is, I'll stay with her an hour or so, or go on with the route I posted. Won't know till I get there.

I definitely want to do more rides, though. I'll post here when I can fix a definite date/time!
