How not ride!
Another good reason to avoid deals gap.
Listen to the people in the van, funny stuff.

I don’t know why people try maneuvers that they and their bike aren't capable of. I could hear him accelerating hard going around the van, was he totally unaware of the sharp corner coming up next?
I feel sorry for the van driver, he’s feeling guilty about an accident that was in no way his responsibility.
Also, curious that he thought the other bikers would blame him for the accident and want to “kick their a**”
I hope the guy is ok and has learned something about his and his bike’s limits.

That was simply a stupid move on the part of the guy on the bike. Seems as though people will go to all lengths to prove their stupidity. Also pretty funny of how the stereotypical "biker attitude" label is applied to those on Hardleys.

Since first seeing this yesterday I've watched it over and over in amazement.
The rider just GAVE UP!!!
Shame the people in the vehicle just drove on.

I agree he simply gave up (or maybe got fixated on the woods - its that ol' visual directional control thing) Based on the video there seems to be no reason why he couldn't have completed that manuever (not agreeing with pass, but if you're going to do it....)
If you look his partner almost followed him down the hill - again not riding his own ride but following the leader :bump
Of course it funny that the people are afraid of getting beat up by what look like a group real bad biker duds:D

Can't believe that anyone could get zoned in twisties like that to not make the turn. And then there is the "lemming" effect - maybe it's a wonder they didn't all go over the edge. Hope that egos were the main thing bruised or battered. The van should have stopped - but can understand some of the sterotypical fears about people on bikes - and there really isn't much room on those shoulders is there?

I didn't see anyway for the van to let them pass  let alone pull over to help without obstructing traffic
I'm sorry to say this, but my wife laughed her but off when I watched this... "you don't pass on double lines... you don't pass on those kinda roads ... on blind curves."
Simply way to hot for the pass or the turn!

also seemed pretty stupid that so many of his buddies continued to pass the van and then slow or stop in the middle of the road.....I can picture a logging truck barrelling down on the van and biker road kill in the road and leaving only hair, teeth, and eyeballs behind.....I like how MSF says there is no such thing as an accident....all crashes are preventable.......

I was on that road in late June and the same thing happened to sport biker in all racing leather. I was behind an SUV traveling the speed limit. A squid comes out of nowhere and passes both of us. Remember this is all double yellow along this road. About 3 minutes later we came up on the same guy, he was on the side of the road trying to keep his bike from sliding down the cliff. The bike snagged on a small tree which was the only thing keeping it from going all the way down to the bottom. He must have skidded by the looks of the rashes on his leather jacket. His buddies finally caught up when we stopped to check on him. A guy in the Deals Gap gas station says it happens everyday of the week there in the summer.

Makes you wonder why so many want to ride the dragon.
The quality of that road looks pretty awesome though.
Rider quality, well....

I like how MSF says there is no such thing as an accident....all crashes are preventable.......
I agree all crashes are preventable but I still wonder where MSF gets the idea that the term "accident" means not preventable.
Definition of accident by www.dictionary.com = An unexpected and undesirable event, especially one resulting in damage or harm: car accidents on icy roads.
Sorry, just a peeve of mine. Definitions of words being rewritten by well-intentioned people (MSF). I've spent quite a few years as an "accident reconstructionist". Funny how most of us in the collision, or accident, business refer to them as accidents with the complete understanding that they are preventable, but MSF seems to think that the label "accident" makes them non-preventable.
Of course, California's Office of Traffic Safety has jumped on the bandwagon as well.
Sorry, folks. I now return you to your regularly scheduled programming after my basically non-essential rant.
Thanks for your attention, or complete lack thereof...
Ride safe,

pretty funny
pretty dumb riders
no fault of the van people, if it was me in the van, I would have stopped to film the carnage, for sure.

A couple of us at work were looking at the video the other day, and I don't think it's target fixation at all. The rider of the first bike was on the brakes when the taillight first became visible, and if you watch the back tire carefully, it gets a little squirelly.

Not much to say about either their judgment or riding ability. I agree that it looks like the lead rider just gave up.

Not the vans fault for sure. They do have the right to drive their prefered speed. It does upset me they stereo typed the Riders as Dangerous though.

I thought it was a great piece of video and it shows just how stupid some riders are and can be!
Like it has been posted, I take it the double yellow lines on the road mean that you do not cross or straddle them, over here in the UK, those lines would be painted white instead of yellow.
So, in the video, the simpleton decides he is going to overtake on those lines, or he has overcooked the bend and has to go round the obstruction in front of him which is the camper van who was doing nothing wrong whatsoever. So, why does the Lemming follow him?
I think the clip was very funny because I take it that everyone got out okay. However, a simple thing like that can lead to the death of a motorcyclist, I would have had no sympathy with the biker at all, my thoughts would be with the van driver and passengers, and the bikers family.
Silly, but that is how deaths occur but I dont want to go down the morbid line of things because it is so funny.
I have a couple of still photographs of bikers taking a bend and one of them over cooks it, the expression on the other bikers face coming toward him is really funny and you can imagine the eventual consequences. I will dig them out from the archives here and post them for viewing on this thread. A picture paints a thousand words and you can imagine the riders thoughts seeing the biker coming across the road towards him.......'Ohhhhh Sh1T' LOL

All these pics happened on the same road. There are better places to pass than where the first Harleys passed the van. There are some folks that will never cross a double yellow but if you won't on the Dragon you will be behind the slower vehicle for up to 11 miles.
In the second set of shots I think the fellow's ego got the best of him. Killboy the photographer often sets up on that curve and we try to show our best side.

Guess I'll leave it up since maybe there are others that didn't see it... :D

Hey Mick,
those are a couple of great pics... makes one wonder... what would you do?
On another board, a guy confessed he didn't know what to say to another motorcyclist he had just injured. The guy had blown his corner, just like in your pics.
It was on the Cherohala Skyway, his bike side swipped the other bike, and sadly, cut the other guys leg off.
Some of the other board members were like "buy him a trike" and "hey he has to know motorcycling is dangerous, dont feel guilty". I dont know what happened to the guy, probably got his a** sued off.
If you don't already know, blowing a corner is a very very very bad thing to do. If you dont know how to ride without blowing a corner, pls take the msf class, we'll help you.
regards,

What's really sad in the second picture is that BOTH these idiot Hardley riders have their feet off the pegs. Looks almost like the future hittee is getting ready to fend off the hitters bike with his foot.
Are these pics of the same accident as the guy getting his leg cut off?

Don,
no, I dont know of any pics of that accident, probably some the police took afterwards I'd bet, but I wouldn't want to see those.
I agree, this type of reaction is very typical, stick yer foot out, etc. It's just instinctual, but as you say, it doesn't help. I'd say the only thing that could've helped there was for the guy in the correct lane to have swerved to his left, he would have had to assumed the HD rider wasn't going to recover and get back in his own lane. We're talkin some nerve here.

Hope the guy's okay, but that was funny as hell. :D
I might run my bike off in the woods tomorrow, but how boring it must be to never cross a double yellow...

Your first responsibility when you ride or drive is to the other people on the road! If you screw up and hurt someone else you had better figure that you own it. If I was ridding over my head and cut some guys leg off I don't think I could ride again. But then thats just ME. I don't cheat on my taxes ether.

Hi, I am new to this forum and this is my first post. Two weeks ago myself and three friend were going home from work on a hot friday. The full dress Harley jumped to the lead and was way out front in a straight away. When the 30 mph turn appeard all too soon he lost it in the turn just like the video. His front wheel went down in the dirt ditch and the bike bucked him approx. 30 yards. Then the bike came violenty following after ending up about two feet from him. I was coming down the straight on my newly purchased 2000 st1100. My parifial vision took in the hidious sight. He looked like he was dead when I got there. He blew it. Thank God he is ok with just a broken shoulder blade. It made me sick to my stomach for awhile but I still like to ride my st1100. It is dangerous though to ride fast, forsure.

Sorry for any spelling errors.
It appeared to me the guy on first bike was being "pressed" by the guy on the second bike....seemed to me like 2nd bike was following too close and first bike just took it too "hot"...then either fixated or just forgot to lean...heavy rear braking--rear tire "hunting", then...bloop....down in the weeds.
No humor in that.
I found lots of humor at the comments in the van. Both ends of the spectrum:
"What a f****** idiot"
to
"Just go. They're going to beat us up"
BLAHAHAAHHHAAA :crackup
Hope the rider was ok.

Got to disagree Bryan, all he had to do was wave him on if he felt that the follwoing rider was faster. Simply put, no planning, no observation, no skill. What a complete arsehole, I'm just glad he did not injure someinnocent party as is so often the case with these tossers. There was no way that he coudl tell the pass was safe as at no point was he riding into clear road, he always at somepoint had obscured road. It's not legal, ( slow/tractors/horses/stationary excepted) but there are some points on solids where a bike CAN safely pass due to it's performance, that was not however one of them. What a total toss-pot. It's just a pity that the van driver felt he was in some way responsible for Captain F*ckwits poor riding, and that they felt they may be accused. Personally I'd just have tossed a lit match down and finished the job, that would prevent him from killing someone the next time. Hard but fair I feel.
Toodle Pip
I know it's not time to say anything bad when someone just had an incident but all this was very stupid:
1. You're in the "GAP", you know there's a curve every 100 yards or so
2. You pass a van "blinded"
3. And most important, you're going over a double line. There is a reason they make it a double line...:banghead:

Having seen some pretty violent fixing of guilt by angry people (mob mentallity), I understand the vand drivers fear.
