In the contemplation stage , have been for a while :)

It's about 850 for me so a 2 dayer , and I checked on Ferry schedule , looks good through 9/25.

So, Question is , Would like some input from anyone who's been there, as I would like to try the Cedar Island / Ocracoke run to get there and come up through Hatteras. Is late Sept a good time to Go ? What to look for and place to stay around KDH. Or is there a better time to go , I don't mind post-poning .
Still recuperating from the Tailbone but I'm up to about an hour at a time now.

Oh , and PICTURES would be wonderful, especially any of the TWO ferry crossings required.

TIA

It's a bloody long day ride to Cedar Island from north Atlanta. The last time I did it I had to stay overnight in a motel in Morehead City about 520 miles away from Atlanta. There aren't too many motels north of Morehead City cause it's all condos.

Make sure you book the ferry crossing from Cedar Island. The crossing is normally pretty calm.

The ride back from Hatteras to Manteo then across NC is even bloody further. If you mean 2 days and 850 miles outward bound OK but the total journey will be a long one.

I was there a few months back .... bloody fantastic ride! My buddy and I used the Ocracoke ferry to the lower end, stayed at the first campground (NPS) off the ferry, then rode the next morn to the 30 minute ferry. First ferry was sublime, second was a bit rocky. Not the pilots fault, it's just that the water was a little rough.

We then rode the rest of the trip up to KDH's, stopping at 3 of the lighthouses along the way. Stopped at the Wright Brothers site (good stuff!), then headed west to the Parkway, and the hills.

Altogether, a great trip. No rain, comfortable temps, and good roads. This was in May, so I can't offer advice concerning September. Bring a camera, and a tent. Hotels are a bit pricey, and the campgrounds that we used were quite nice.

Lots of earthy-crunchy types around, so expect some funny looks .....

I rode out to the Wright Brothers site last year. I coulda spent all day there. You'll find a small museum/visitor's center, the site of the first flight itself, and a large hangar building holding more museum pieces.

I don't recall exactly where, but I was on two ferries. Both were a somewhat short trip--30 minutes or so. I had no troubles. Wait in line, get on, go. On one ferry I was called to the front of the line and loaded first, on the other, I got on the boat in line with everyone else, but one of the deck hands directed me to park next to another bike.

On both ferries, I simply used my sidestand, but a hand offered to chock my wheels and/or tie down the bike.

I didn't spend a great deal of time in the area unfortunately. I'd like to go back. You can also check out Lost Colony nearby, which has an interesting history.

Have never been down there but I will be at the end of August. I'll get a new battery for the camera and try to remember to use it. Jeff

At the Wright Brother's site, be sure to attend a ranger presentation. They give a great history of the Wright's experiements and earlier attempts at flight and there is a replica Flyer there that the Ranger uses to show some of the results of the testing.
