View Full Version : Do You Forget About Your Turn Signals?

I catch myself far too many times riding along and glance down to find my turn signal flashing away. I hate when that happens  as it can be dangerous. Anyone else have this problem?

I've only got 1,200 miles so far and I certainly have the problem of forgetting to punch my turn signal off. I'm practicing including a sweep of my dashboard and turn signals when I check my mirrors, which I try to do every 5 to 10 seconds.

PS: Rode at night for the first time yesterday and noticed the cute lit ST1300 over by the blue bright lites indicator. Nice touch. ;-)

I seem to forget once or twice a ride, doesn't matter the length.

Funny, it doesn't bother me as much as it seems to bother those I ride with.

They get over it eventually. ;-)

Dennis is always complaining about my turn signals being on when he's in back. When he's in front I'm frequently catching him. I think it happens to almost every biker sometime. To reduce it, I make a habit of pressing my cancel button every time I shift. :)

Never happens to me in commuter traffic.

However, always seems to happen to me when I pull into a parking lot. I am usually so overfocused on cars, spots, hot chicks, etc. that I always forget.

Usually scream at myself inside my Shoei....because I usually ***** about others forgetting....

Everyone forgets once in a while. All it takes is for that one time to be the time when a cager sees your signal and figures, "Oh, that bike's turning so I'll pull out NOW."

Look out for your riding buddies and signal them if their signal isn't canceled. My crew has long signaled by holding out a hand with fingers extended, then closing fingertips together, then extending fingers, then closing, etc. -- your fingers are "flashing" just like your turn signal.

Most times when I'm turning, there's a spot midway through the turn where I have a split second to turn it off. But there's this one left turn I make on my commute where more times than not, the person in front of me slows down just before that spot. Adjusting for it loses me my usual shut-off-the-signal moment, and maybe one time in ten I forget to go back and clean up after myself. (When that one happens is heavily influenced by whether ot not I think the driver ahead of me is paying enough attention.)

Making the signal indicators a regular quick-glance item helps, too.

When I first had the bike it had self cancelling indicators fitted

I hated them due to several reasons eventually i removed them and now I forget much too often to turn them off

I can't see the stock indicators unless I'm sittin down or back so I'm adding a second set into the vents. I used Goldwing leds on my Valkyrie and they are perfect ....... bright enough but not too bright.

I voted "never", but actually it's "almost never". I try to keep my thumb on the button until I complete the turn. Also, since I always use the signals, it's become part of my turn routine to turn them off.

I used to push the button frequently while riding just to be sure that I didn't have a signal on, but that annoyed my logical side and I came up with my current method.

I do remember following a girl in a nice red Mustang, and she left her turn signal on. As I mentally criticized her for having a such a nice car but looking like a dumb driver, I happened to glance down at my own instrument panel. Yep - I had my signal on too! I felt like such a idiot hypocrite!

I voted "Sometmes" but it's very rare, and never at night since adding the LED's to the mirrors.

I hardly ever forget and agree with Bryan. Just as I pull into a parking area where there is alot of activity either auto or walkers, that's when I pull up into a parking position to find the signal still on. I do a look down visual when I make turns as I clear an intersection as a habit, don't know why, just have always done it, and on the 1100 my cancelation is easier on the left signal than the right, don't know why that is either, ride safe

Rarely forget, but does anybody else ever hit the horn button instead of the signal switch? (Is that an 1100-only "feature?")

I occasionally hit the horn button as my thumb moves to the signal switch...

As for the topic at hand, I forget my signals far more frequently when using my cage. I tend to be much more attentive on the motorcycle than in my cage.

I forget once in a while
why don't they put an auto shut-off signal
I was used to have this on my lovely virago.

My turn sequence is pretty regular but once in a while something in the road will distract me and I'll forget the signal. It bothers me when I forget. I've been trying to get in the habit of checking my signals every time I look in the mirrors. And yes, I occasionally hit the horn by mistake. And since I installed a Stebel horn this year, that's a scary mistake!

It used to be a strict habit on my ST1100 to turn off the signals, but on the ST1300 I seem to leave them on more often.
On another note, I took my neighbors HD Ultra Classic for a drive last weekend, and the one nice thing that stood out about the bike was the self-cancelling turn signals. They work great!!

My 78 cb550k beeped when the blinkers were on. It sounded geeky but it worked great. I miss that bike.

I've gotten much better about checking to be sure my turn signals have been turned off. A while back I installed one of those electronic turn signal cancellers, but I don't rely on it that much.

This is a very good question on a very important subject. I am afraid one day it may kill me. I will forget to turn them off and some cager in a hurry will turn / jump in front of me. I really don't know why almost 40 years after we've been to the moon we can't make a turn signal cancel gadget.:(

After 25 years of riding Yamahas equipped with self-cancelling turn signals, I'm having to retrain myself. I leave them on far too often.

Having said that I think I prefer the non-cancelling signals now. The self-cancelling ones were always resetting too soon if I signaled a turn early as in a long left turn lane. I just have to reintegrate the habit of turning them off.
