My post WeStoc ride is shaping up nicely. A little tourist run around the Southwest with the wife and a few other couples. Thanks to a member here (thanks again Chris), we found a great Mom/Pop motel in Montrose that's reasonably priced and fairly central. Our preferred lodgings are those that are central enough to allow some site seeing/dining/shopping within walking distance. With this in mind, does anyone have any recommendations for the Durango area or Taos NM? Sante Fe is an option as well but there's a festival that weekend which usually means no deals.....not that there usually are any in Santa Fe. Any and all (even negative) suggestions welcome.

See ya in Golden

Steve,

Just so happens I spent the night in Santa Fe and Durango last trip. Neither is exactly great for different reasons.

Durango

I spent the night at the Super 8. Extremely clean, has a Laundry room, Very comfortable Nicest room I had all trip....and the 2nd most expensive place I stayed. About $80 plus TT&L for one night and they would not dicker at all. Parking lot does not adjoin rooms. Lots of eating spots across highway. Coord N37 14.604 West 107 58.370

Santa Fe

Stayed at the Days Inn. OK on the clean part, very old furniture in rooms but acceptable. Is fenced and you can park directly outside door of ground floor rooms. The Motel 6 across the street looked like a better deal but no vacancy when I got into town. Very close to lots of eating spots and the Indian family running where very nice and helpful.

If you stay in Taos...

A tip from a friend to get a coupon book at Denney’s had gotten me a room for $49/night in a town where the going rate in the summer is twice that. I was able to find it easily as it is the closest lodging to the Plaza available. It is two blocks south of the Plaza and is a charming Southwest style (what else) building. I was offered an upgrade to a king-size bed for free and allowed to park the bike in the grass in front of the room. That turned out to be a mixed blessing because it had rained and the grass was slippery. I later asked to park near the room on the concrete and they agreed.

I was surprised at the size of the room. It is very nice, furnished nicely with a table and two chairs, Internet access (somewhat sporadic), and a comfortable bed.

Everything in Taos is either within walking distance or no more than 5 minutes away by bike.

See ya in GoldenSteve,

Where in Montrose? I'm thinking of the same ride post WeSTOC, through Gunnison & Montrose, down to Durango, and then start heading back west on my way home - maybe out to Monument Valley and Grand Canyon North Rim. I just haven't quite planned out my stops yet...

Do you remember the name of it Fred? We're trying to nail everything down in advance as we'll be there Saturday night. After checking around a bit I'm sure it will be Taos. Sounds like Santa Fe is going to be a busy place that weekend. THX.

When you young whippersnappers get to the age, AARP has a very good discount rate for most motels/hotels. You can become a card carrying old phart at the young age of 49 (if you have the cajones to admit to it!!;<)

I'd qualify if I lived in the US, ;) but I've found that the AAA rate is about the same and is available both sides of the border. I'm amazed how many people don't even ask if there are any discounts available when they travel. It's always my first question.

Sorry about that - I cut and pasted from another post and edited the name out. The name of the place is Indian Hills.

On my last long rode, a nice lady in the Las Cruces Days Inn said she'd give me a good discount if I told her I was a government employee. She then gave me the discount AND upgraded the room to one with a Jacuzzi tub. I usually ask for the "sore butt discount".

I sent an e-mail to Patty at Canyon Trails. They offer a discount if you are on a bike. She just gave me a great rate on a 2 queen sized bed room for the Saturday before WESTOC. She also knows that others from the board may be calling and is happy to oblige.

When I talked to her she was pretty hesitant about admiting that she was the one responsible for letting Chris have a room. Smart lady!
