With the summer disappearing fast I had to jump on the last weekend of the summer that the state wasn't blanketed by rain (we've had steady rains since and major flooding of the rivers, fall is here, summer is over). I've always wanted to do a documented SS and the acquisition of my '04 ST this year was the ticket.

I do have to say that riding in Alaska is much different than riding the big roads down states. My wife and I came across the country last year on my '98 Triumph Trophy 1200 and did an 850 mile day with relative ease... understandable with many highway speed limits at 75mph and traffic flowing at almost 90mph... anyway roads are different up here and anyone who has ridden the Alcan or in the Yukon in Canada can attest to it.

I started my trip in Wasilla then road north to Fairbanks, SE to Delta Junction, S to Paxson, W to Tangle Lakes, E back to Paxson, S to Valdez, N to Glennallen and SW back to Wasilla for 1050 miles in 22hrs. Mostly the speed limits are 55 with rough winding roads. Some of the views are spectacular and some of the streaches are very lonely.

Weather was overcast most of the way except it rained like cats and dogs on me to Vadez and from Glennallen back to Wasilla... that was the worst. It was a very windy road, raining, in the dark.. yuk.

I rode the stock seat which before the addition of a custom made Alaska Leather Sheepskin Buttpad was limited to 400 miles before butt-burn... after the sheepskin, no problem.

I had zero mechanicals and had a total of a little over 4 hrs of stops along the route.

I have to say I love this ST, it is all Honda superior engineering.

Here's a few photos of the trip.

Thanks!

If you do come to Alaska there are three routes that are the most spectacular. Two of which I did on my trip. Those are the stretches between Delta Junction and Paxson on the Richardson Highway, past Donnely Dome and Summit Lake.... no one hardly travels that road at all, no trucks, no tourists, no locals... it is a great Alaska secret (and the side trip to Tangle lakes from Paxson is 21 miles of splendor also, but it can be busy during weekends). Then the leg from Glennallen to Valdez through Thompson Pass and Keystone Canyon (rainy photos).. again, WOW....

The third road to visit is the Seward Highway along Turnagain arm from Anchorage to Seward... definitely it WILL be busy, lots of traffic, but that route is on the national register for scenic highways for good reason.

If you didn't notice, the first picture has McKinnley in the background... its been rainy this year, so seeing the mountain was a ride bonus.

As for the antenae mount, I made that. It is REALLY simple, but requires you drill your rack/passenger handle to mount it (which by the way is made of stinking PLASTIC). Works wonderfully. I'll probably use the same holes but make a slightly more sculpted shape this winter. It is 3/16 aluminum stock just a flat piece.. I'll take some photos and show you on the Farkle thread in a couple days...

Hey, AZT - I'll be in AZ (Mesa) on the 14th next month and will ride to Vegas (for some training the following week) that weekend through Utah.. hit some canyon sight seeing on my Triumph. If you're interested in a ride for a day, let me know..

Sounds like a great ride, John.

The wet road pic (fourth one) would be great on next year's calendar (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14169).
