Has anyone tried using one of those cervical collars the sprint car drivers and dirt bike riders sometimes wear? I saw some in a bike shop and wondered if it would cut down on wind noise.

There are two types of collars. The collars worn by sprint drivers will severely cut down on the range of motion you will have with your head/neck. It's made to prevent the head from moving when the car hits something solid. As a motorcyclist, you have to keep the ability to rotate your head, plus, on a bike you aren't sitting perfectly perpendicular. Therefore, you have to rotate you head at a certain angle. The collar will prevent various angular rotation.
The collars made for dirt bikers aren't as thick/tall...but wouldn't block windnoise, either.

Back in the early 80's I used to wear something called a Throat Coat. It was like a dicky that had an elastic top to it that would wrap around the bottom of a full face helmet, the other end you would tuck in your shirt/jacket. It definitely kept the wind out and kept you nice and warm. If wind noise is your bane that might be a solution... when you're not riding in the southwest.
