Just curious as to what levels of insurance coverages folks run with. It's come up for me since I'm doing some comparision shoping for new coverage for the ST and I've had insurance sales people try and talk me down from the high coverage I prefer since I learned the hard way what happens when the other guy carries the minimum (100K out of my pocket :no1:).

I have the same liability as my auto policy 100/300/something - too lazy to check. Nothing else - I can't figure this stuff out, so cheapskate-ness wins in the end.

I'm an insurance broker and I see what can happen to "thrifty" people that only want to be legal. I carry a combined single limit, uninsured (underinsured same thing) motorist, medical, comp, coll, and a roadside assistance program that beats HRCA. Higher the limits the better, you just never know what can happen. Also, I read a thread about health insurance not covering dangerous hobbies not that long ago. Believe it or not, motorcycling falls under many companies fine print. So call your company if you don't want to read. Always be in the know.

Claims Analyst here.

15/30 Bodily Injury Liability coverage on the bike policy.
Theory: chances are, car v. my ST, the car drvr/passengers will not be harmed that much. Also, my auto liability coverage (100/300) acts as a secondary policy in case I really do hurt someone badly while on the bike.

Collision/comprehensive carried $500 deduct/$250 deduct
Theory: covers my bike if I collide with something. covers my bike if stolen/vandalized, etc.

No med pay.
Fact: My health insurance carrier WILL carry me if I am hurt on the bike. I checked it out. Health Insurance provisions vary though...check yours by making a phone call or reading the very enthralling policy wording (zzzzzzz)

No Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist Coverage.
Fact: The UM/UIM coverage that I carry on my cars is "portable"...meaning that if I get injured while on the bike due to a hit and run driver or a driver that does not have enough coverage to take care of my injuries/pain & suffering, then my auto policy (100/300) steps up and covers the incident...even though neither of my cars are involved...it covers me while on the bike. This provision may vary from state to state. In Arizona, UM and UIM coverage is portable.

I also have a funeral benefit on the bike policy. No more needs to be said.

HRCA and Progressive (my bike ins carrier) both have me covered for roadside assistance.

Almost forgot:

Property Damage Liability coverage: $25,000.
Theory: should cover the bills if I rear end a Porsche/Viper/Mercedes as well as most other vehicles. However, it would not come close to covering the Lambo Murcielago that I was following the other day...but that rarely happens AND I just backed off the rear of the guy just in case !!!

My 2 pesos.

Wow... you guys have what is possibly the *most* confusing insurance system in the known Universe!!!!

Here we have basic insurance, which is required to be legal and only covers the other party if you're at fault, or, Comprehensive insurance which covers you, your pillion, your bike *and* anyone you may injure irrespective of who's at fault.

The only caveat for comprehensive insurance is whether you insure your ride for market or agreed value. Market value would be what the current "2nd hand price" is and Agreed value is a dollar figure that the insuance company agrees to pay you irrespective of what the market value is.
