OK,

It's official....I am cleared to leave on vacaton after a few last minute scares. First Ernesto, Then FEMA wanting support for evac in Florida. Whew!

When I heard that we had a tropical depression closing in and then saw the early predictions I had a panic attack:eek:

I am leaving Thursday afternoon and will make a run north to Dallas and camp out (hotel) that night. I dunno if the North Dallas group still meets Thursday nites but if they do , I may run by there.

Friday I am going to run up to Santa Rosa and meet Rob and Doobage.

So after all that, it now looks good. Al, on the other hand was going east to West Virgina then running back to meet at NATSTOC, he may be a little wet now. Maybe all those storms where following him last year, not me:rolleyes:

So West Bound and Down , Roll em up and trucking, we gonna do what they say can't be done, We gotta long way to go and a short time to get there,,,,,

Got my trunk attached to the cookie sheet last night and crammed it full of 60% of my gear. Set up the new tent in the garage so I knew what to expect and so I could repack it in the trunk.

AZST: What time do you think you'll be in Durango? I'm guessing will be there sometime right after noon on Saturday. So far as I know, you are the missing color (I'm silver, Rob's red, and Chris is black, IIRC). I was most likely going to camp at the Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Montrose on Saturday night. Very cool canyon.

Noon might be a bit early for me to get to Durango. I will probably be meeting Mark and Chris in Ouray some time between 3-5. Of course, things may change. I have Clmixon's cell and will give him a ring if I am anywhere near you guys at that time.

(By the way, Clmixon's "Maxwell Smart" thread title was not lost on me.)

Note of warning: 550 north of Ouray to Montrose has many deer (more than average). I have an Aunt and Uncle that live on the south side of Montrose and last year it was insane the number of dead deer that were laying along side the road. These are mule deer as well, so be extremely careful. (not a good place to speed, as a matter of fact, it might be wise to slow down a bit, so long as you aren't getting any tailgaters.

I've been trying to decide whether or not I should camp in Ouray and go to the hot springs (very nice if you've never done it) or go up to Black Canyon.

So many decisions.

Good news for YOU:D

After two cat. 2's and a cat 3 directly on my house the last two years.
Ernesto is just a South FL thunderstorm (only expecting 7-10" of rain in 24 hrs):wind1:

Spencer,

You have my sympathy. I have been a Gulf coast resident all my adult life. I wish it would have just curved off into the Atlantic and avoided everybody but two years in a row would have been too much, not from a Here it comes type feeling but from the fact that my workload triples during an Evac and my vacation becomes non-existant.

Thanks, we know what your talking about
Tina is a disaster relief coordinator for the power company down here.
2004 season she was gone for about 6 weeks total
2005 season about 8 weeks
At least this one looks like the eye isn't going to go right over me like the
last three.
(That little spot of FL coastline that made hurricane history....my house:D )
Important thing.....all seats have shipped back by 10 am today and the bikes
are secure. I can relax and enjoy the storm now.

Ride safe, Spencer

Ouray hot springs for me, our next-door-neighbors bought a home, so we've got a place to use as a base of ops...

Which day(s) are you going to be in Ouray Mark? I've always used a motel there, but this time if I stay there I'll camp. Any recommended camp grounds?

I have the official NASA decision making hardware. Heads it's Ouray and tails it's Gunnison. It's Gunnison according to my official NASA flipping device. That'll be $285mill for my consulting work. Doob you gotta start travelling with better company...Mixon and Hughes are kind of strange. No offense fellas! LOL!!

I haven't ever been there; so, I can't help you this time...
I the neighbors said there was a KOA near them and I found this:
http://www.koa.com/where/co/06158/

After this trip I'll know more...

As a general rule I only use KOA's as a last resort unless they are highly recommended/scenic. I remember that the information booth in town is right next to the hotspring/pool, so I'll probably stop and ask.

But if your high-powered NASA decision flipping device says Gunnison, well, it might just be Gunnison.

Mark: Do you know what route you are taking to Golden after Montrose? Would it be odd for me to switch groups mid route (or combine the two groups into one)?

I just like being difficult.

And how would that be any different. :D

I left Bryan my cell # since he Mark and Chris would be so close Saturday night, If you are gonna go out and camp rather than stay with Rob and I at Canyon Trails I would think BC NP would be your better bet since it is much closer to where we are stopping.

I have a tenative ride out 141 to Gateway and then through Delta to Aspen to Indy pass to Golden laid out but it is a long un for Sunday. We can look at several alternatives. I will e-mail you the Gramin files tomorrow during the day for Santa Rosa to Montrose and then one possible route to Golden.

BC NP...For Gunnison, I meant, Black Canyon of the Gunnison (river)...sorry about the confusion. I think that's where I'll stay.

The long trip on Sunday sounds good. I wouldn't want to get to Golden too early since we'll be there for 3 more days.

Can't wait to get going now!

Mark

BC of the G is our route to Golden from Ouray.

You'd be welcome if you want to go through the gunnison... my 1ST time this way and I don't want to miss it.

We will start monday (don't know what time as long as we don't get to Golden too early)... actually getting to Golden is fun because you get to greet people who ride in... and get a face on the name/handle you've known for years...

later,
Mark
