Sorry for the post for a different bike. If this is the wrong section for an off topic technical issue, please let me know.

I have been lurking for a while and should be joining the ranks soon. I have finally made the decsion to go with the ST-1300 (over the BMW 1150rt) almost sole based on reading info in forums.

Interestingly, in the BMW forums everone seems to complain about failed trannys, electrical problems, shaft splines, etc. Here, the only consistant complaint seems to be the Heat Issues, "right side drift" and (laugh) paint options (or lack there of..).

Nothing, seemingly, negative about reliability.

This alone has sold me on this bike as my sport tourer of choice.

I am (realatively speaking) young, it seems, to be looking at one of these bikes. I have owned 3 crotch rockets and while all my buddys are still trying to go "fast", I am more interested in going "long".... want to start travelling a bit. Looking forward to an STeed soon...

Anyway... to my immediate problem. 1997 VFR 750. Bad Stator / reg-rectifier. Common problem.

I have all of the parts to do the stator swap and instructions.

My only question is: Do I need to drain the oil on the bike BEFORE I pull the cover off to pull the stator?

May seem obvious, but none of the repair guides or write ups on the net discuss this simple fact.

Thanks for any info.

From what I've seen, yes you need to drain the oil before doing a stator swap... this was on a different bike, but how much different can it be ;)

However, the stator is rarely the problem...

Thanks guys. Yeah, its a love hate relationship...outside of the electrics, the bike is bullitproof... but man it sucks to break down on the side of a freeway in the middle of california traffic and summer heat because a $100 R/R failes...

I am actually trying to get this thing worked out for my brother... the goal is to purchase an ST over the next month or two and have my brother ride the VFR... :)

It's also a daily commuter...

Thanks again for the info!
