View Full Version : Bent bar ends making throttle stick?

During the middle of yesterday's ride, the throttle of my recently acquired 1999 ST1100 began not springing back to 0-throttle position, forcing me to complete the ride by twisting the throttle manually back and forth while shifting, accelerating, decelerating, etc. (A bit unnerving, but I made it home.)

The previous owner (who admits once dropping the bike on the throttle side), had installed the NEP (plastic, simple) cruise control (aka throttle lock). I thought that was the problem, but upon inspection it turns out that the ST's bar end weights (both sides) are screwed in at a slight angle, almost as if they're cross-threaded.

When I loosened the flat-head screw in the center of the throttle-side bar-end weight (while holding the bar end from rotating) the throttle snapped back perfectly. BUT...the bar end weight is now not only still a bit crooked, but it's loose! Probably won't fall off, but I'm worried.

Any advice? What am I overlooking here?

Thanks for your help.

Lee,
not too sure I can help much, but, I'm guessing the weight inside the bar end may be the issue. But it's odd both sides would be askew, because the left side doesnt have a weight...

anyway, the bar ends do turn a bit normally, the procedure is to hold them while you tighten the screw, but they never become so tight that they wont turn a little.

do be sure the NEP isnt causing the problem. We st owners must not rate much with NEP and VistaCruise as we have to modify one of them to make them work, so sometimes the modification may not be so great.

good luck and regards,

Hank,
Thanks for the reply. You know, you may have a point about the NEP Cruise. It was immediately after disengaging the NEP (@ 50mph) that the throttle stuck (forcing manual twist backward to decelerate). After loosening the right bar end weight at home in my garage, the throttle released, which made me a-s-s-u-m-e the bar end weight was the problem. Maybe I should look harder at the NEP Cruise...
Best,
Lee
