Coming up from the southeast along I95, heading all the way to Maine, what would be the best way to totally avoid the quagmire in New York City? I have no desire whatsoever to go through New York City on 95 or other roads on a motorcycle, or a car, for that matter (no I've got nothing against New Yorkers). Riding in traffic among 8-10 million cagers just isn’t my cup of tea. So I am looking for a good route that will take me around and away from it.

If you want to go around NYC just a little bit, switch over to the Garden State Parkway and cross the Hudson River on the Tappen Zee Bridge on 87/287 and pick up I95N at the Conn border.
If you want to go around farther out, you can keep going north and pick up I84 and head east through Conn.
Or... stay north and head east on I90 through Mass.
The first choice, of course, keeps you closer to the coast, and is quicker to southern Maine. Good luck on your way "downeast".

I find the Tappen Zee to be a real pain in the butt durring "normal" hours. I use the I-84 route but I am usually coming from I-78, so its not that far out of my way.

If your looking to interstate it I'd take 81 north to 84 east. Avoiding all the major cities on the east coast.

According to S&T its

1021.7 miles from Bennetsville SC to Brunswick ME via 81/84

962.5 miles from Bennetsville SC to Brunswick ME via 95

What you lose in adding 59 miles to your trip your sure to gain in travel time by avoiding 95.

Thanks all for input, guys. 81 > 84 > 95 it shall be.
