What is the real reason folks go through the expense of different exhaust? Does it make the bike sound less like a high pitched scooter? A few HP here and there you most likely can't feel or take advantage of.....

For me, the reason was two-fold. Weight savings and aesthetics.

Sound and weight, looks aren't bad either. As far as performance, very little change, even with a K&N and TCT FPR.

Can't figure that one out... I actually like the look of the stock exhaust, all other aftermarket mufflers look like, well... aftermarket. Sound of the bike as delivered is pretty sweet in my opinion, know of one person with aftermarket exhausts and his bike has a deeper growl to it, but that is it.
To each his own, but I like the original.

Because the stock pipes look like they belong to a 1973 Ford Galaxy Or A tuna Boat..

Well said Louie and the Staintunes weigh 12 lbs less than the stock mufflers. And they just look way better.

What's wrong with a 1973 Ford Galaxy? I think they are kinda cute. I used to own one BACK IN THE DAY. Stock pipes sound just fine to me, but then I'm Deaf anyway.

Its all about the sound.Bikes are mechanical, they are supposed to make noise. The noise connects you to the machine, Cause and effect sort of thing. With no noise, vibration or power pulses,, Thats a pretty boring ride as far as Im concerned.. I might as well drive my new Toyota , leave all the windows open, plus the sunroof and wear a helmet.

My SO's feet and calves were roasting. She is used to having floorboards, and even through her boots it was hot. I bought the Two Brothers Carbon Fiber pipes and there is no more heat on/in the saddlebags or my SO's feet/calves.
They sound pretty good too! Been a cruiser guy my whole life. I am used to hearing a bikes exhaust.
AND, after seeing so many high mile ST's with gold pipes I did not want mine to look that way.

After having loud cars, bikes, kids, and a couple ex-wifes, I enjoy those quite stock pipes. BUT, I have not heard the 2 bros or the Staintunes yet. Who knows what the future holds! I have to many chuckes over telling curious people the bike is gas turbine powered. Talk about some gullible souls.

Alot of good answers so far....how about the fact that I don't hit the rev limiter anymore....because I can hear where the RPM's are ;) ....the bikes way to smooth to feel it!

Sounds like my brother-in-law's ski boat, which has a V-4...only the ST much faster on dry land.

I curious: Where are the catalytic converters mounted on a 1300, and does switching to aftermarket cans get rid of the cats?

With out the restrictor's in the Tunes, I'm thinking more of a small block with gear driven cams!

The cats are part of the oem cans that get replaced with aftermarkets.

Getting rid of the heat producing cats sounds like a pretty good reason for 'tunes.

Just put the 2 Bros carbon fiber 05 exhausts on. They look great on my 06 black bike and they sound great too. No more sewing machine! Ashamed to have a great motor and not hear it. Staintunes were going to be a two month or longer wait and cost more.
