Another contribution from Mike Martin's Website (http://home.insightbb.com/~mmartin36/Disclaimer.htm):

Over time, the gas cap gets harder and harder to unscrew. Obviously, some lubrication will make it easier, but simply applying some grease to the face of the gas cap gasket seems to help for only a short while.

The trick is to apply the grease to the upper surface of the gasket, the surface that contacts the gas cap. Try it, you will be surprised how much better this works.

yes, it does help.

for me i use the last few droplets of fuel to lubricate it. :)

It is worth a look around all of Mike's website, as it has pretty well all of the information you will need.

I use silicon grease, aka dielectric grease.

Take the washer out put a smear on it and reinsert with the smear towards the flat of the cap ... DO NOT use a lot!!! You don't want it in your gas.

Clarification: put the smeared side up, away from the gas tank to make this work best.

I`ve done the lube as described, and it works great. A couple of times its one of those things that gets forgotten prior to a trip. As a temp fix while fueling on the road check for discarded oil containers,(at the gas station)there is probably enough residue to lube the gasket.

Not my idea`suggested by another ST`er`
