View Full Version : Penny Stove - - It works!!
I read about this, thought "Baloney" so I built one...
I'll be doggone... Talk about cheap and portable..
I didn't use a Heineken's can, I cut up two Pepsi
cans... Took a bit to get it started at 15 degrees,
but it is outside, burning as I type...

Just one word of caution, if your drinking Everclear you should not be playing with matches.
Paul

Everclear is the winner here and has the advantage in you can drink it while you wait for the hot water. Enough Everclear, and any amount is enough, you don't care if the water is hot or not. Just one word of caution, if your drinking Everclear you should not be playing with matches.

...or climbing in the rafters..............nevermind......

Interesting stove.
I made the mistake of trying to spell that volitile clear liquid once instead of just drinking it. After that I couldn't bring my self to taste it. This is from someone who used to drink 151 rum. :)

very interesting... I didn't know anything like that was possible. Pretty cool. So obviously I'm a newb to this... what's the point of the penny? Could you use a nickel? how about foreign money? ;)
Looks like the coin covers the fill hole(s). If it didn't the fuel would burn out the fill hole instead of the side holes.
I suspect even a loonie would work...:D

Aside from covering the fill hole, the penny acts as a pressure regulator..
if the internal pressure gets too high, it lifts the penny and opens up as a relief port... You also get another flame port when that happens...

Is it still buring, or did you drink up the Everclear :D So... Moonshine, how did it get it's name... you might look for some "fuel" there :D

It went out... Had it burning inside the Brinkman smoker... brought the
temperature up inside the smoker from around 15 degrees to over 100...
I was suprised...

That's impressive... a girl on TWTEX has the same deal... she says to make sure and put some kinda plate under it when using on picnic tables or anything that can melt ;)

John,
I didn't have any problems using pop cans..
when you make the little indentations along the
bottom edge of the burner, that reduces the diameter
just enough that you can press the burner into the
bottom piece.. I used a drill press and a piece of wood
to press them together.

They also give the suggestion on the site to place the holder in a 400° oven and the burner in the freezer. There's just enough expansion and contraction of the aluminum to allow them to slide together. Definitely requires the use of oven mitts and you might want to have drunk the beer the day before.

That's freaking cool. I might make one - just because I can!
Those planes are neat as well.....if they only sold my beloved Samuel Adams in a can, maybe I'd get one :D .
