Anyone up for BamaSTOC? I was thinking something along these lines:
Timeframe: March 9th until March 17th.
Where: http://www.barbermotorsports.com/
http://www.barbermotorsports.com/barber-vintage-motorsportspark-museum.php
http://www.barbermuseum.org/
Of course, this is going on in April:
https://www.southtix.com/ama-superbike-tickets.html
There are a lot of good campgrounds and hotels in and around the area.

I luv the camping thing, even though I've not done it too much yet. The outdoors, clear (hopefully) skies, fresh air, cheap, and oh yeah did I say cheap? ;)
Hope I can make it,

I have a few scattered weekends reasonably free. Would have to get it on the calendar ASAP to try to make it. Since I ride all year, I would just bundle up if it is cooler. Anything in the middle of the state will have to deal with football traffic this fall. Let me know and I will try to work it in.

HOLD EVERYTHING! ....or, well at least slow down.
29 Dreams in Vandiver, 30 miles S of Bham is closed
to camping...just talked with the owner and he said
the cabin/camping thing was his worse problem and
has closed it. It is a fun, nice place convenient to some
good rides and we can still go there to meet, greet
and eat.....
I am sure we can find a substitute but, right now I don't
know what it is.
I say we have a get together soon and then plan something
for Spring also to accomodate people who need to plan...

how about some place around pell city. There are quite a few nice rides in the area. If it is in the spring before school is out the lodging should be reasonable and within an hour of barber and Cheaha. We have ridden that area a couple of times and some real nice twisties. I would look forward to a chance to map out some routes in the area for the fun of the ride.
sandman
08-25-2007, 09:32 PM
I'm with you, Chip, Cheaha is a much better experience than Oak Mountain. With the recently converted picnic area into primitive campsites it would make for a great rally point. There is a pavilion just up the hill from the campsites that would be ideal.
I mentioned Oak Mountain for those that were interested in being closer to Barber. Oak Mountain campsites are separated more than Cheaha which makes it harder to gather for campfires...etc.

This might be another option:
http://www.bearcreeklakes.com/camping.html
http://www.usr.sonet.net/usr/stan/camping.htm
Williams Hollow offers excellent camping sites as well as a bath house for him and her. The surrounding area provides some nice riding along the water, and there's plenty of food spots available and cabins at Horseshoe Bend just up the creek a ways. But from what I gather, most want to camp, so that wouldn't be an issue. I'd say the first weekend in October or last weekend in September would be doable.
About 2 hours from Birmingham.

Well, as much as I always wanted to, I have yet to have the real opportunity to attend a *STOC event. This is looking interesting to me and late Sept - early Oct is sounding encouraging.
Keep talking this up a tad - when things settle on the where's and when's of it all, post it clear. I may try to get in on this one (finally...) and I have wanted to go to Barber for a long time now!
Now, to keep working -ever so gently- on the pass for Taos...

I was planning on riding the airhead but could still end up on the ST that weekend.

I'd prefer 1st weekend in October but I'm easy. It's time to firm up the date and location for guys that have to travel a ways to get here.
I've camped at the Barber Motorsports Park campground and it's primitive (read muddy) with portapotties for the masses at $20. a night. The bathhouse was nice but you need tickets and a pass to get a bath. They also didn't allow you to stay Sunday night after the event's over.

Gordon,
That's good to know about camping (or not) at the track. Do you have some leads on campsites in the area of Barber I could contact? I saw the earlier references to Cheahea and Oak Mountain. I'm hoping to stay fairly close to the track and museum. It's just under 500 miles from my place to Leeds - for a three day weekend I don't want to ride much further than that. Thanks.

The problem with Oak Mountain is the separation of the campsites makes it hard for the group to gather. But it is the closest to Barber Museum.
I've stayed at Tannehill State Park on the West side of Birmingham before and it would be a great site if they would let us use the group area I stayed in. Their restrooms are good and there is a pretty good restaurant in the park. Unfortunately, our group may be too small to use the group area. Barber Museum is on the East side of Birmingham about an hour away from Tannehill State Park.
I'll call Tannehill today and check out the date and information on group camping.
We need a count of how many of us are gonna make it to this thing.

The primitive camping is $10.55 per night, and they have cabins available. However, the cabins are two miles away from the campsite. FYI: The cabins are $114 on the weekend.
BTW...If you want to reserve a spot for your tent, tell them your with the ST-owners group. Call them at 1-205-620-2527

there are some good roads of 280 S taking 65/459/280S and catch al 25 at harpersville going east and north about 15 minutes from Oak Mountain this will take you back into Leeds.
US231 is also a nice ride up to Oneonta from Pell City, then across 160 back to and across I65. Not North Carolina but a nice ride.
Would like to make it but may have family stuff getting the in way. Will not know until middle of September.

I am thinking of staying at a campground in Alpine or at Oak Mountain. Mapquest puts it about 42 miles from the Alpine, GA campground to Barber by traveling Hwy 25. 25 and the connecting roads to Alpine looks like a road that I would like to ride back and forth - what is it really like?
Oak Mountain is 32 miles to Barber, 10 more miles if the road is good is OK by me, but I will be traveling 25 in the dark.
Should I just stay in Oak Mountain?

Hey guys. I'm just a "newb" in this forum, but have lived South of B'ham my entire life and have ridden the roads in this area for many years. My favorite riding roads are towards Cheaha State Park, via Childersburg, Grist Mill Road(Kymulga Mill mini-park with camping), Berney Station Rd, and continuing Eastward on great backroads(including Cemetery Mtn road, as it appears on a GPS and Adams Gap Road), & eventually to Cheaha State Park. These roads are definitely the ones with the lightest traffic, fewest stop lights/signs, and very scenic towards Cheaha Park. I would think that the out-of-area guys, attending BAMASTOC, would like to ride on these roads.

dduelin, that Alpine campground is probably the one I mentioned in my previous post, at Kymulga Mill, in Alpine- great riding roads in that area and I'd suggest taking backroads across Logan Martin Dam to Hwy 25 enroute to Barber from there. If you do stay in Alpine, we may be able to meet to ride or at least discuss a nice route for you to take to the Barber Motorsports Park. I live relatively near Alpine(about 25 miles), in Chelsea.
