@ 70 MPH, how many RPMs are you turning?

Wouldn't that depend on what gear you're in? :D
p.s. This gets my vote for the least-needed poll ever put on this board.

Yes and you're right, just goes to show what can appear when you're really BORED!!! :crackup
But, for those that are interested the driving reason is to get a feel for where my bike should be performing at that speed (in the final gear) as I've lost about 10 mpg and there is no decipherable reason for it...all checks of the operation and mechanics are within specs.

Craig,
If your mileage has dropped that much double check your thermostat. If it's dropping below three bars that could explain your drop in mileage.

Byron,
Thanks for the info, I had already researched all the info I could on the site and I have 3 bars, solid as the day is long, no leaks, no drips, no skips, no errs...:) thus the  look, and trying to determine the approx RPM for the bike to see if there is any other explaination...

If I'm in 5th gear, my bike is turning just a shade less than 4000 RPM when 70 mph is indicated on the speedo. However the speedo is a bit proud. If you've lost that much mileage with the same driving habits, check the basic stuff first... air cleaner, spark plugs, etc. Personally, I can get quite a variance in mileage due to how spirited a ride I'm taking.

I dunno, somewhere around 4000. I found out last weekend mine does 131 mph in 4th though. I thought I was in 5th and had earplugs in with the XM radio turned up and wasn't looking at the tach. Scared me when I bumped into the rev limiter and the engine started stuttering. Shifting into 5th cured the stuttering.

Fuel mileage is a very tricky thing on a motorcycle. If you are running into a head wind, your mileage will be drastically reduced. For instance, Mellow and I were running into some very strong headwinds on the way to DesertSToc and we got less than 30 MPG. On the way home from the event I was blessed with a tail wind that allowed me to get over 50 MPG pulling the Unigo at speeds somewhat above the posted limits. So your motorcycle could be running great, but the wind is stealing your MPG.

Another thing that can play havoc on the mileage is the windshield position. That should only be a few gpm's, not 10.

@ 70 MPH, how many RPMs are you turning?
Sounds like a trick question. ;)
70mph actual or on the speedo?

75 on the spedo, 70 on the GPS = 4000 rpm for me.

Sorry! I wish I could spread sunshine and warm temps up North for you all.
Within minutes if my return, the sky turned black and it rained, hailed and had some tornadic activity. Perfect timing, huh?

Thanks to everyone for the postings, it's helping me decide the next course of action. I'm running about 4K @ 70 (in high gear, on the speedo...:p: ) I have changed the plugs and gapped them per the manual. I had checked the air filter when I was doing all the maintenance week before last and it looked ok, will probably replace it soon. I'm using Rotella synthetic (blue bottle) have been since 9K miles on the bike. The reduction started after the STealer was under the "hood" for the ground wire recall work. It might be a perception problem on my part, but I'll know more after several more fuel stops and comparing the data. Thanks again to everyone that's responded! (especially those that didn't think it was a stupid question/poll) :bow1: :D

I posted mine from an ST1100 so be careful with the results. Your question got me thinking so I had to go out and check, just to make sure....70mph / 3750 rpm.
I have found that different oil (oh, gawd did I say that!!??!!) tends to make the rpms fluctuate about 75-100 rpms after it has been riden 300 miles. That's just me though.
Oh gawd..I said oil...may the spirits smite me down!!! ;-)

Come on guys - type of oil changing gear ratios?
The gear ratios are fixed, only changeable by the diameter of tyre (tire) you fit. They don't change.
That said, I'm doing 1800 revs at 90mph. I think this is normal.

On one wheel or two?

I keep all three wheels on the ground at all times. None of that "stunt" nonsense for me. You go ahead, Squid Boy.

With Moto on this as well. I just got out today for the 1st time this year and bucked a headwind from the west and was getting upper 30's in mileage on the dummy guage. When I was traveling beck eastbound it kicked up to mid to upper 40's. Windshield, wind, cold temps all have impact significantly on the mileage.
the driving reason is to get a feel for where my bike should be performing at that speed (in the final gear) as I've lost about 10 mpg and there is no decipherable reason for it...all checks of the operation and mechanics are within specs.
maybe someone here can tell me why....
I've tested this when I had nothing better to do on a 1,000 superslab run: at 70ish, if I run at 3500-4000 rpm in 5th gear I get about 5 mpg LESS vs running at 6,000rpm in 4th gear.
with a 7 gal tank, that's comes out to a wasted gallon of gas!
