OK, we need suggestions for rides on Sat... Please make you suggestions and then we'll post a poll.

Say like the Rim Of The World Highway? To Lake Arrowhead and/or Big Bear for lunch? Some of you Iron-Butt riders might like to do the desert like Joshua Tree and such. Or the entire San Bernardino Mountain run. Or even heck just hangin' around town and fishin', shopping, or stuff. Let's hear it!

I think meeting Sat. for breakfast and doing a lunch ride would be fun! Sure! Need to find out what places are available and can handle a big rowdy crowd of mad raging ST'ers. We'll post details soon!

BTW, the roll call poll worked fairly well for getting a rough estimate of how many folks will show which helps for planning food. The first poll (pre-crash) was only off by 10 for the dinner reservations (although the second one was off by about 20 - fortunately I stuck with the first count even though 5 or 6 folks canceled).

One thing I learned at DesertSTOC was to plan the hanging around dinner for the first night (which may not be an issue for CreSTOC since there doesn't seem to be a primary location where almost everyone will be - unless y'all do the big cabin thing). The other REALLY IMPORTANT thing I learned was - this group is more rowdy on coffee than on beer! :D

With the weather the way I hope it will be, I think the first night should be an out door BBQ. There is a large supermarket on one corner of the lake that sells meat at a great price (and it is always quality!). Heck, their prices on most everything is great.

It would be really easy to do a BBQ.

If the event is small, we can probably do it at my place, if it gets big, we can do it at the lake. I'll just hook up my BBQ to the back of my ST and tow it down to the lake!! hehe... :)

Looking forward to this!!

Most folks will be showing up on Sat. I bet. So a breakfast for Sat. morning might work, might not for all. Maybe a Sunday Goodbye breakfast would be in order for all attending? Bar-B-Q for Friday for the first arrivals sounds good to me! Yummy! A Sat. lunch ride would be fun too!

Also I was thinking a Sat. night dinner for all is good with maybe a bowling competition afterwards and that's where we'll hold the raffle for STuff! How's that hit you guys? As you can see I'M ALL ABOUT EATING!!! LOL.

Hmmmmm.... I just called the bowling ally and their number is disconnected!!! We'll have to stop by there and check out what is going on next week.

Cheers,

I was thinking about contacting Big Bear Chopper in, guess where... BIG BEAR! They are a custom chopper manufacturer like Orange County Chopper and have been on TV, the Speed Channel I think. Anyway, I thought that would be a cool Sat. designation and of course LUNCH! My thought was to call them and see if they would be interested in giving a group tour of their shop. I've been there once and bought a really cool tee-shirt. Cool bikes too! Whatcha think?

Hi Everyone,

Fred asked me to help out with suggestions for some local rides, so I put together some ride scenarios using Microsoft Streets & Trips (Version 2007). Maps and data files are attached for the first 5 rides.

RIDE 1- CRESTLINE TO IDYLLWILD (84 miles on way)
Idyllwild is a quaint little town in the nearly San Jacinto Mountains (www.idyllwild.com) and is a great place to ride over to for breakfast or lunch. Highway 243 up the northside of the mountain is a local favorite, but you can also come back on Highway 74 down to Hemet and then 79 back to I-10. Highway 74 has lots of great twisties.

RIDE 2 - CRESTLINE TO PALM SPRINGS (80 miles one way)
Palm Springs will likely be teaming with activity over the Cinco De Mayo weekend, which is probably enough reason to consider going there (nor not!). However, the Palm Springs Aerial Tram, which rises 8500 feet above the desert floor is another compelling reason to put up with a boring ride on the superslab to get there. Check out www.pstramway.com for details. About 1.5 hours each way.

RIDE 3 - CRESTLINE AND HIGHWAYS 243 AND 74 (210 miles round trip)
For those of you that like twisties - this is the ride! Highway 243 is a great run up the San Jacinto mountain range, and you can then continue on to Highway 74, which drops you down to Palm Desert. Highway 74 is a technical ride ride that offers spectacular vistas of the desert below, as well as one of the best roads Southern California has to offer! (One of my personal favorites.) This ride offers some great places to see including Idylwild, and desert towns such as Palm Springs.

RIDE 4 - CRESTLINE TO ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST (171 miles round trip)
I have to admit that I have never been to Angeles National Forest, but it's on my To-Do list! I planned a route that takes you north to the desert town of Palmdale and then up the mountain anad across the mountain to Wrightood (a local ski resort.) About a 4 hour ride.

RIDE 5 - CRESTLINE TO JOSHUA TREE LOOP (245 miles round trip)
This is the longest ride at about 5.5 hours in the saddle. It descends down to I-10 but returns on the much-less-traveled backside of the San Bernardino mountains on Highway 38. It's been some time since I was on that road but I remember that it had lots of nice twisties on it, as well as interesting changes in the fauna as you progress up the mountain. The ride can be shortened by leaving out Highway 38 and coming back the same way. Joshua Tree is a must-see if you've never been there!

RIDE 6 - SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN LOOP (100 miles round trip)
This is simply a loop around the San Bernardino mountains without descending down. There are plenty of turnoff that can be taken to make the ride more interesting, such as a visit to nearby Lake Arrowhead. Unfortunately, I've reached myu limit of ten files and can't upload it!

Well, I hope this helps out a bit and gets you thinking about where you'd like to ride while you're here. Hopefully, some locals that know the area better than me can add some comments.

Rick

Excellent job Rick. Now I know why Fred asked you to pitch in. You sure do know your way around SoCal!

Thanks for all your effort!

You forgot to mention that on Ride 2 we should all stop in and admire Louie Louie's new '07, that's what he wants is 20-30 ST's showing up at his place!

Excellent choices! Thank you Rick! That should give you guys plenty of options to decide. I for one would vote on the San Bernardino Mountain loop. That is some pretty country!

As we know the current temporary server is mangling the images when enlarged. I am sure the site's transfer to the new server will remedy that. But if you want I can send the pics to you via email. Of course Rick was kind enough to include the Microsoft Streets and Trips (version 7) data files for those of you with the software.

I wasn't able to upload the last of the six ride suggestions I put together on the previous e-mail, so I'll do it here. I'm attaching the map jpeg, as well as the Streets & Trips data file.

I think this is the best bet for most of us. It is a very beautiful route with great views and twisties. It's too bad it has to go through some flatlands. Maybe the ride can go to Angelus Oaks which has a country store and maybe a cafe, not sure, I'll check. Then we can ride back. That way we avoid having to ride through the city. Just a thought. It's a good one!

Bummer! The one I'm thinking about is in Big Bear Village on the South-East side. I know about the one in Fawnskin; they've been closed for long time now. I'll check on the one I was thinking about.

I wished that I lived closer to you that sounds like a great ride/day trip.

Here is a link to BIG BEAR CHOPPERS (http://www.bigbearchoppers.com/index.htm).

I was thinking of calling these guys and see about setting up a group tour of their Big Bear facilities. They are a well known and respected chopper builder like Orange County Choppers. They have been on TV on the Speed channel and numerous magazines, etc. We can do this on Sat. as part of the group ride through the San Bernardino Mountains. Interested?
