Rider Safety!
Those with FRS/GMRS Radios bring them along they can be of great help during a group ride!

1. Ride at your own risk. The rider alone is totally responsible for the equipment, the rider’s own safety, and the safety of any passenger. By riding with us you agree that you and your passenger are riding completely at your own risks.

2. Respect all traffic laws. Ride with personal responsibility. If you violate any speed limits or other laws, you are totally and absolutely responsible for ANY consequences.

3. Don’t ride impaired. No one may ride with us while impaired by alcohol or other drugs. We do not partake of even one beer with a meal while continuing to ride. Nor should anyone ride with us when any other impairment to their physical or mental condition which could affect their ability to ride safely.
The time for drinking together (for those that want to) is when the riding is done for the day or evening.

4. Ride YOUR OWN RIDE, and AVOID the bike in front of you. This means that you should ride at a pace that is normal and comfortable for YOU. You must be aware of the limits of your skills, abilities and experience, and ride accordingly. Do not exceed your comfort level by trying to keep up with a faster rider. If you crash, you'll ruin everyone's day, especially yours. There is zero reason to try and keep up with a faster rider, let them go. They agree to be waiting for you at the next turn off *see rule 5.

5. You are RESPONSIBLE for the rider BEHIND you FOLLOWING THE ROUTE. When you reach a turn off, check your mirrors. Stop if needed in a SAFE and VISIBLE spot, either before or just after the turn off. Make certain the rider behind you sees you. Do not resume to full pace until you are CERTAIN the rider behind is making the turn.

6. Do not tailgate. Maintain a safe braking distance by endeavoring to follow the "three- to four second rule", with a two-second minimum at all times.

7. Ride single file in twisties, and on secondary roads, ride at least 3-4 seconds behind the rider ahead. More is OK too.

On faster State roads with longish straights, more traffic, and sweepers that don’t require much lean, close up to more normal 2-3 second following distances. Whenever heavier traffic is involved, you should close up more to a 2 or 3 second following distance, but never closer than 2 seconds behind any bike directly ahead of you, on any type of road, even where we are riding very slowly due to traffic.

8. Ride staggered on divided highways and in town.

9. Your lane is your limit, over the centerline is equivalent to going “off the road”.

10. Pass other vehicles at your own risk and with your own judgment. Pass other vehicles ONLY when YOU yourself decide it's safe to do so. DO NOT use any hand signals intended to tell the rider behind you how to pass; IGNORE any signal you may see from another rider telling you to pass a vehicle (other than their own). DO NOT make an unsafe pass because of concern about being left behind. The rider in front of you will wait for you at the next turn off. *See rule no. 5.

After passing other traffic, in general (when safe to do so), pull to the far right side of the lane for a bit upon pass completion. This habit allows a passing rider behind you (if you've missed seeing them in your mirrors), to get back into the lane behind you more quickly and safely (if space becomes tight with oncoming vehicles). In an extreme unforeseen emergency (with oncoming traffic), the rider behind would be able to tuck in next to you in the left side of your lane and drop back, perhaps saving a life. Otherwise, side by side riding is to be avoided in all normal circumstances (Beyond stop light line ups).

You should AVOID expecting to line up next to the rider ahead when passing as a normal passing procedure, pass only when it is safe to do so. Expect to line up behind the rider ahead after the pass.

11. Leave your ego at home. If you're not comfortable maintaining the pace of the rider in front of you, wave the rider(s) behind you by. *See rule no. 4.

12. Do not pass other Riders in the group. Except when YOU can judge it safe to do so AFTER being waved by. *See rule no. 8.

13. Set speed to sight line (speed set to where you can stop within what you can see).

14. Use your turn signals when turning, changing lanes, or pulling over. Remember to cancel them.

15. Faster riders ride closer to the leader, more laid back riders take up near the back, no novices for sweep position.

16. In general negotiate riding closer or farther from the leader at rest stops. unless you feel the need to wave others by to drop back for a more comfortable pace.

17. Don't "peel off" secretly. Let at least one other rider know if you decide to leave the ride, so time isn’t wasted coming back to find you, thinking that you crashed or had a mechanical problem.

18. Make sure your bike is safe. You are responsible for ensuring that your motorcycle is in a safe operating condition and that it will not pose a hazard to other riders or you. Visually pull a safety check on your bike and your neighbors when we stop.

19. Wear good gear, at minimum a DOT helmet with eye protection adequate protective jacket, gloves, and boots. Protective pants are also preferred. It’s likely a good idea to bring sun glasses or something to cut glare mid day and clear lenses for evening if we get stuck out in the dark.

20. Keep it SAFE FUN.

Look at the first post on this thread. STeve has put the particulars there as a starting point (Motel Location etc.).

Oops I see he didn't put the Motel location down in that post.

The Hotel is located on Rt. 206 just south of Newton NJ, and just before you get to Fredon Springdale Rd. Rt.618 and Springdale Garden Rd. Right on 206, Big Sign, can't miss it.

The route mainly winds up through PA and back down into NJ, very nice ride.

Hi fellas - I'm shipping my ST13-Pan across the pond in a month's time (Southampton -to- Halifax, NS). Then I ride down to JFK Int'l Airport to collect my mate, Ellen, from the UK. She arrives there on Mon-Jul-02. We'll then tour around for two weeks, visiting:

Niagara, Toronto (maybe), across NY, MA (Boston), CT ...

.. before I drop her back to JFK on Mon-Jul-16, when she catches her flight back to the UK.

I'll then be touring around the US for a couple-a-months on my lonesome. I'll hook-up with Ellen again somewhere in the northeast, prolly Vancouver, before we fly back to the UK together, from San Francisco, on Mon-Sep-24.

But it would be great to start my solo tour with a Meet-up - and the NJSTOC Meet looks about perfect to me.

So my question is: Can a stray Brit [me :)] tag along too?

In anticpation, I've RSVP'd "Yes" on the other associated thread.

So what's the position regarding the accommodation aspect - are there any rooms left at the chosen venue, does anyone know?

Thanks

KEITH

We'll just be back from our 3wk western trip so can only show up Fri. night for Saturday's ride. Hopefully Dawn won't be too trashed to join me. You guys have an early stopping spot with a real cool mountaintop view Friday morning. Also a very cool County Rd. with some enjoyable turns afterwards going up towards Jeffersonville, before cutting back to PA, I wish I wasn't going to miss Friday. There is some very nice countryside we get to ride through over that area of NJ/PA Sat. and a sleeper road that has a great rhythm we got on by accident the first time. Both Days should be plenty of fun.

Our custom two up seat is in the mail for this ride. I sure hope it works  cost enough bucks so it better.

I can't figure what it is STeve, I can't open any of the files you've sent or posted lately. Did you do anything different with the software? I have version 7 and I think you do also. It keeps telling me you have a newer version.

After waking up in the CT tornado weather at a CTSTOC, with our tent a few inches high and dry on minuscule island inches higher than water, while some others got a bit, er, ah, "submerged" as it were... I think I'll stick with the motel this time 'round. see you there though Dennis. I'd come to visit your campsite for the campfire and Pig Roast you will be putting on, :tent6: :D  but don't want to ride the bike back to the Motel after drinking.

OK Billy, this is all a bit confusing, MY "about" says Mapsource 6.5 while the "more information" shows City Navigator Version 7. Both of those sound higher than 6.12.4.

I suppose I'll check for an update, but I've been resisting. Perhaps I will after NJSTOC.

Like STeve says, there's a Friday route to get you guys warmed up and in the mood for Saturday. I was really looking forward to both days and am bummed, but I'll only have been back to work 2 days, and don't see how I could cut that Friday loose now though. sigh.

Port Jervis for Friday has an Elkes Brox Memorial Park, Skyine Drive that goes up to a nice view and is a good jumping off place to get to somewhat different roads from Saturday. It goes up past Hawks Nest and over to Jeffersonville in NY, then into PA and winds into NJ. There's even a lunch spot sporting an elevated deck to eat on.

In Geek Speak Mapsource 6.12.4 is an upgrade to 6.5 Just double check that link I posted above and scroll down some. City Navigator is now up to Version 8 but that should not stop you from opening the file.

The file opened for me and I'm using 6.12.4. I had no choice in upgrading because older versions would not work on Vista.

Ok somebody send me Fridays ride PLEASE :)

I just called the motel and they only have smoking rooms with 2 double beds...ugh. Nancy and I are planning a bike trip starting the weekend before down to Savannah and thought we could hit NJ on the way back. Dennis, you think you might cancel a non-smoking room? If so, let me know.

Oh, and those of you we met at nestoc and are wondering if Nancy's riding all the way down to GA on her Sportster... nope, I told her either she goes two up or she gets another bike. So she's decided on a BMW F800ST with the lowered seat. She tried the Sprint ST but it was just a little big. This beemer is a nice bike, looks like a good match for her. She should pick it up in a couple of days.

Man, I'm going to have to build another garage.

Kerry, my plan was to check the weather as the weekend draws close, then decide to hotel it or camp it. I would love to save the money AND have you and Nancy enjoy a non-smoking room, but this...

After waking up in the CT tornado weather at a CTSTOC, with our tent a few inches high and dry on minuscule island inches higher than water, while some others got a bit, er, ah, "submerged" as it were... I think I'll stick with the motel this time 'round.

sounds ominous. Let me wait it out a bit.

What I have noticed is that cancellations come in at the last moment, so don't give up just because they don't have anything right now. Also, if I do give up my room, we can probably arrange that it goes to you, we'll just both stand there at the counter.

Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up AND THAT'S AN INVITATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
Roll up TO MAKE A RESERVATION, roll up for the mystery tour.
The magical mystery tour is waiting to take you away,

Kerry,
Congratulations to Nancy on a VERY cool new bike choice. I've been watching that one myself. I believe it was Bike magazine that tested it against a VFR and called it the modern VFR replacement, as in better than the VFR (which they previously considered top of the game as an all rounder, well, minus the V-Tech, they must still have the VFR in Europe). They have hard bags for the Beemer I believe, not sure if they come with, or are optional though. I'll bet she's going to really love that bike.

Cool trip you guys are heading out on, rubber down and enjoy.

Dennis,
They weren't quite as flooded as it sounds, just a couple inches deep runoff water :p: :D Greg left his tent door open when we went up to eat, with his helmet upside down on the tent floor. He had a half gallon of drinking water in his helmet when we got back  MAN did it dump trailer loads of water on us. The evening's campfire/mini bonfire/nonsense session at Todd's trailer was worth it anyway.

Keith,
Just perfect song for a longish adventure to another country on bike! :) Look forward to seeing you there for sure!

Here are a few .jpg images to help you with finding Friday's meet up spot. One is printable size and shows the location of Port Jervis which is where the STate of Northern New Jersey meets up with the STates of Pennsylvania, and New York on Route 209 by the Delaware River.

I'd suggest you guys meet up at the Port Jervis Diner. I've never been there, but it should be a place anyone in town can point you to without trouble. It's a half block up Rt6 from Rt209 I'll post a printable map of it's location for all of you.

If you set a meet time of 9AM, go in and have some coffee, with a start on the road time of 10AM, that should give everyone an easy time of making it there on time. Hotel landing time would be one side or another of 5:30pm then I would guess. That's if you don't honk it along too hard and rest often enough for the two up crowd.

I want to go check on a slight change in road during the week IF I can cut loose a weekday morning to do it. Silverlake Rd. is a nice windy road, BUT lots of developments and such living on it so kind of clogged up compared to what I had hoped. I want to check out Bushkill Falls Rd. as a possible alternative.

Billy,
Here is my old Mapsource 6.5 Friday Route for you. I'll attach a STreets & Trips2005 file of Friday's route also in case your Garmine software recalculates the route on different roads (preference settings will sometimes make it do that too). You can check it between both, and probably get it right.

Like I said, this could change as per one road still though. If I can I'd like to check out Bushkill Falls Rd. as an alternative to SilverLake. We're getting ready for vacation, so I'm not sure if I'll be able to or not.

you guys who have no GPS, but do have STreets&Trips, can print out a turn by turn with the STreets&Trips file.

OK THIS IS A REVISED FRIDAY ROUTE as of June 14, 11:30pm. This is the one folks.

Kerry,
They have hard bags for the Beemer I believe, not sure if they come with, or are optional though. I'll bet she's going to really love that bike.

Cool trip you guys are heading out on, rubber down and enjoy.
Yup, they do have hard bags.. but they are extra (about $800!), and not all that big - and you know girls..they don't know how to pack light ;) . She's still deciding on whether to do aftermarket bags or not.

She just sprung the trip on me... wants to visit daughter-in-law who is home alone while my son is in Afghanistan. We're going to meander down the coast.. Delmare Peninsula, Cheasapeake Bay bridge tunnel, etc. Looking forward to it.

Dennis, I'll call and reserve a room and ask if they can consider me when they get a cancellation... but I'll be on the road, so I guess I'll just check back with them probably Wed of that week.

Kerry,
Prayers for your Son's safe home.

WoW! That trip is as good as an extra Birthday, or Christmas present!:) :) :)

Bet the Beemer bags are both good quality and look integrated compared to stuck on Givis though.

Hmmmm Carl this has got to be a software error.

Or is this a planned U-Turn?? :)

Carl_T
06-12-2007, 10:06 PM
Didn't catch it hitting 84 in STreets&Trips Billy. It's supposed to have continued straight and taken Blooming Grove Rd. just above 84 instead. The MapSource file I posted has it correct (at least in my version that is).

You never know where I will embed secret U Turns in a route to keep you guys on your toes and your slow speed skills sharp  On the pre-ride the Route had us going on a small section of non existent road just a bit before there.

Thanks for catching the Rt. 84 debacle before someone used the STreets&Trips file to program their GPS.

When you check back and forth with STreets&Trips, did your GPS get the route correctly from my file?

When you check back and forth with STreets&Trips, did your GPS get the route correctly from my file? The Mapsource file worked out fine.

I opened the file then right clicked the route in Mapsource to duplicate the route. I then right click to recalculate the copy. This gives you two routes in Mapsource. I then just look for any variations between the two and adjust accordingly.

This time the routes came up exact. I guess there wasn't many options for Mapsource to chose from.

Cool Billy, I gotta thank you for posting that MapSource update! I thought you had to pay for it. Anyway I did the update and can now open STeves files just fine, so my software is up to date. The little thumbnail map is cool.

Thanks :)

I'm hoping MAYBE to take the SV650 and check Bushkill Falls Rd. and double check 590 starting early Thurs. morning if I can trade out work for evening. It's about 250 miles of riding so it'll take a lot longer than I thought though. Of course part of that is there are a few NY County roads on the way home I want to check out for future riding times too. Sadly can't do it any other time or I'd hook up with some of you guys for a run at them.

Carl ... thanks.

When I get to Halifax, NS, in a couple of weeks' time, the first job on the list is to buy some new navigation software, in particular: MapSource City Navigator [North America] v.8 for my Garmin 2610 GPS unit. I'm expecting to pay around USD $140 for this item over on your side of the pond, which is about half what I would need to pay, for the same product, here in the UK.

I'm also hoping to pick-up a copy of MS 'Streets & Trips - 2007' too :) [ ... er ... are there any board members - who is/are prepared to give copyright laws the middle finger - who might be feelin' especially generous and charitable over there?]

So, if all goes according to plan, I shouldn't have any problems finding my way around when I get stateside.

Meanwhile, thanks again for the posted paper routes, which I shall now print-off for back-up purposes.

Yeah Doc, I tend to bring my own mug on a large diesel flatbed support vehicle trailing behind me, and it take a bit o' time to drain that puppy. :p: :D :D

Thanks, I edited the start time to 10AM.

Be good to see you there Fri. morning, except I'm stuck working so I can't show up until Fri. evening. However STeverino will be there to lead a group off into the wild blue yonder I'm sure.

Got my Russell Day Long seat today and put it on the Bandit. My better half now has a Queens throne to lounge in when she wants to do two up. I hope to set off 6AM tomorrow morning to check out a couple of NJSTOC roads and some NY roads on the way home for it's maiden voyage, so I'll take the noisy Bandit rather than the stealth SV. It feels like it will be way comfortable sitting on it in the Garage.

I almost got my heels down flat on the Gel seat I had, now it's balls of the feet instead. It's about an inch higher. I don't feel the need to flat foot anyway since you get plenty of leverage with the balls of your feet on the ground, so I'm happy so far.

The look is not sleek and definitely has people knowing you are one serious rider when it comes to fluffer butt comfort!:p: I'll post a couple of photos later on.

Carl_T
06-13-2007, 04:45 PM
In case any of you have thought about it for a bike of yours here are a couple of photos of the Russell seat. The ST has more room fore and aft as the bandit had a hockey puck passenger seat, and is a tad short.

I made sure they understood my wife's comfort was job1. It at least looks like she got the Queen throne here. We have yet to test it out riding.

I tend to sit up front dirt bike style so my seat portion fits perfectly for where I perch and we'll see tomorrow if it really improves things or not.

Sure is uhhhhh, different looking. Form follow function with this bike and my Wife's arthritis though, so I'm pretty happy and hoping it is as cushy as it looks for her. They built this to our measurements.

OK I'm definitely the one laughing now.276mi. checkout ride and my butt was singing "zip a dee doo dah I could ride more" at the end.

Everyone ride alert on this one in PA/NJ. Deer jumped out in front of me no less than 6 separate times. YIKES! It was an overcast day and they were on the move for some reason.

The part I thought I might change is staying as is. Bushkill Falls road had a 35mph chopped surface, a 30mph speed limit, and nothing but 90 to 100mph corner radius turns. The original Silver Lake was low traffic today and nice through the STate Park section (minus the Deer).

I did find a very cool short section that even has a nesting Eagle site on it. Nice turns and elevation changes with decent pavement. That is going in to replace the more boring 55. Then some boring stuff connects up to another nice section, but that little ride is worth it in comparison.

WARNING WILL ROBINSON
SO THERE IS A NEW FILE posted up here
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/showthread.php?p=247642#post247642 8th post down.

I deleted the file that was there and added the new one in it's place, so click on it and download it again if you downloaded it before (Billy this means at least you).

Those that downloaded the other file before 6/14/07 11:30pm, replace it with the new one. This should be the last Friday ride revision.

Also the road we figured was the cool one Saturday, well that figuring turns out right. Great run on it, big smile.

I posted up a very short ride report of a section of the Friday ride Dawh and I pre-rode again yesterday. It's on the NJSTOC section of Group Rider here.

http://www.grouprider.com/groups.php?action=viewthread&groupid=185&threadid=1146&page=6&fpage=1#post5682

Oh the drudgery of riding these roads for you guys is SO oppressive. I can't imagine why anyone would ever take a task like that on, what was I thinking? Lord riding through sunny beautiful country with little traffic, who would want to do that?

SteveST1300
06-18-2007, 04:39 PM
Well I completed the SS1K. Including stops and the border crossing it was 19 hours 1134 miles. I averaged 47.6 MPG. I think we averaged about 65-70 MPH maybe a bit higher. highest speed recorded on GPS 94.4. All in all it was a lot of fun. The weather was good throughout the day Saturday, we had a bit of fog/mist on our return trip in the Pocono Mts.There were 7 bikes total, one was a Hyabusa and he had his girlfriend on the back( can you imagine 1100+ miles on the back seat of that!) The rest were a VFR, Valk, Wing, and 1 Triumph and our 2 ST's.
Below are some pictures from my visit to Deals Gap.

How was the 07 rental bike's condition? Did he let you ride on the black one, was it slower than silver?

Here's a skyline drive photo included in Friday's ride. This is just a piece of the view, there's a lot more.

SteveST1300
06-19-2007, 06:39 AM
The rental was an 06 I did not ride it but it was in good shape. The only problem was by the end of our week the tires were shot. Cupping very badly, they were Dunlops.

Carl_T
06-19-2007, 09:23 AM
eeeeeewwwww!!!! Dunlops! Yikes! My SV had them from the previous owner. I took them off with 2/3 of their tread left I disliked them so. :(

That guy with his girlfriend on the Hayabusa with it's hockey puck pillion seat, you just gotta know after returning home, that door is closed for some serious amount of recoup time. Daddy aint getting any for a long time methinks. Hardly seems worth it to me.

I think you couldn't be more wrong. She got off that bike at our turn point in Canada and I mad it a point to see how she was doing. I am telling you she felt better than I did (no wise cracks here). That last group of three, the 2 up 'busa and the VFR got back to Dover at 3:30 AM and were all doing great. They had stopped on the way back for a full sit down dinner. The real beast was the guy on the stock Triumph Tiger who arrived ahead of us and said that if he were to continue on for another 500 miles he would need to get his other helmet (?) NOT a full faired motorcycle with aftermarket seat, just another helmet.

Carl_T
06-20-2007, 06:21 PM
Yeah MAN! I remember how much abuse I could take when I was younger. Now days with bad knees and easily aching and pulled muscles I can no' do it anymore, sigh. That's pretty amazing on her part though. Maybe she weighed 70lb.?

Was it a Tiger, or a Scrambler or Bonneville? The Tiger seat is real good. I don't need wind protection until it gets down below 30 degrees, but I sure need a good seat real bad now days. If he was on a Scrambler or Bonneville, my hat's off to him, as I "think" they have a pretty retro seat.

The limiting factor for distance on my SV650N is decidedly the seat rather than the element protection for me.

SteveST1300
06-21-2007, 10:15 AM

Hey guys, just had a thought. I've been to but one of these STOC get-togethers... and I know Carl likes to keep the riding groups no bigger than about 10 riders. Looks to me like we have over twice that number signed up.

So just curious how it's going to work. Is there more than 1 ride Friday and Saturday?

SteveST1300
06-22-2007, 09:30 PM
I think we have 25 attendees but only about 13 or so bikes. The ride on Saturday is more tour than sport as we will mostly be 2 up. If anyone wants to do a more spirited ride we can break into groups if needed.

Please allow me to complicate things:

I can leave on Friday morning from West Chester PA, so I would love to meet up with you guys while you are on the Friday ride... Can I do that?

What time do you think you will be at the lunch stop (Narrowsburg, NY)? Mapsource tells me it is about 2 hours 10 minutes of continuous riding from Port Jervis to Narrowsburg, following the Friday route...
I was hoping to meet you there, then finish the Friday ride with y'all.

Guys I'm stuck here in Oakland California with a holed Air conditioner condenser and cracked radiator from a Baha run through a soft deep section of desrt trail earlier in the trip in Utah. We came across the Mojave desert in 124 degree heat without air conditioning and dirt plugging the radiator crack.

We are stuck here in Oakland waiting on a new radiator, and won't know if they have one in Fresno until Monday.

I'm not 100% sure but it looks like this will cause us to miss NJSTOC entirely.

I have answers to your timing questions sitting home in house computer, with no access to them. I THINK we were slated to eat lunch around noon, but can't remember exactly.

STeve is calling for a Friday head count on Group Rider

Tell STeve I will meet him at the Port Jervis Diner @ 9:00 am on Friday, 7/20 with kickstands up @ 10am. Group Rider keeps sending me in circles. Why would you use a second website to get a head count for an event on the mother site?

Thanks Guys :)

DocLiz, group rider does mess with some Internet Explorer browsers and does best with Mozilla. STeve will pick you up here I'm sure. We're testing out the route sharing abilities of Grouprider.

John, you are right about the GM. It looked like I would float the silt with enough momentum, but the wind had buried the existence of some very deep whoop type holes beneath the thick silt. Bad JuJu that turned out to be. What looked like some discarded trash on the fly, turned out to be abandoned plastic under frame truck parts from the fenders of other hapless vehicles in the same spot.

I'd have done better to have stopped and checked out the partly benign looking area on foot first. Hindsight and all that. At least the dirt plugged the radiator leak until they released it working on the AC. 124 for a whole day across hundreds of miles of dessert, with no AC and windows open makes 104 seem balmy and sweet. :D

Dawn has uhh........ "mentioned"... once or twice... that our GM is no Baja Buggy, after that little fiasco. Jumping a GM off four humps is not well recommended, though we did make it all the way across the trap. :p: I've no doubt you will hear about it from her

Oh, and if you are foolish enough to go for that Pig Roast, Tommy the attack cat will get you all:eek: :)

Start at Watersedge at 6:30 AM (Bob, Todd, maybe Nelson and others). The group then meets up with John at exit 11 of I84 at 8:00 AM, and then on to meet with Bill and Danielle off I84 (exit 8 at the gas station) in Newburgh at 9:00 AM. Steve,
Count me in as a definite on Friday and highly probable for Saturday. My activities previously conflicting with the NJSTOC schedule have resolved themselves and gone away.
Since I now know for sure I will be home and in the area on the dates of NJSTOC, I am willing to open up my home to any of the attendees who have not yet confirmed lodging elsewhere. I do have unused bedrooms and garage space. I am about 15 miles from the Econo Lodge in Andover, NJ and only about 2 miles off Friday's route and what I think is Saturday's route. Sorry for the late notice, but If any member is in need of a place stay - PM me for directions.
This will be my first STOC event and I am looking forward to meeting you folks. By the way, which of the 5 routes listed on Group Rider is the Saturday Route?

If I am not out of state, I may be able to do these rides. So please consider me a “possible” and I might even drag a couple of other ST riders along with me. We would not require motel rooms, etc. and are familiar with the area.

However, could Carl or Steve please confirm the following:

1) I understand that the Fri meet is at the Port Jervis Diner at 9:00, leaving at 10:00 – is that correct?

2) What is the meeting point for the Sat ride, the hotel? What is the meeting time and departure time?

3) Could someone attending please print a couple of spare copies of the map source route for those of us with broken printers and no GPS?

Thanks and I hope to be able to meet up with you folks next weekend!

Steve,
As you are the primary organizer for this event, I am asking your opinion or anyone else who cares to respond for that matter. I make 2 1/4" metal buttons as a once-in-awhile hobby. Being retired, I had nothing better to do this morning so I designed a button for the NJSTOC. If you think the NJSTOC participants might like one as a souvenier, I will gladly produce and donate the required number of buttons.
As this is the first NJSTOC, an inexpensive souvinier might be appreciated. Or some might consider it a bit tacky! Let me know what you think. If you feel the button is not an appropriate addition to the weekend activities - I will understand. If it is a go, let me know how many.

Adam,
With some two sided tape or Velcro, you probably could stick them on the ST. I could supply them with magnets for your refrigerater - but they will not work on the ST tupperware. I don't know if I would decorate my bike with something not even close to the beauty the ST. But I know after enough direct sunlight, the ink on the buttons from my HP printer will fade.
Bill

93NJST
07-17-2007, 09:43 AM
I was thinking if they would fit, placing one on the oil cap. But if the ink would fade, I may have to rethink everything. I still one at least 2.

What if I put a clear coat on them. Would that help the fading?
Cheers,
Adam

2dollarbill
07-17-2007, 11:51 AM
Adam,
The button design is printed on standard print paper. The button making process sandwiches the print between the metal button backing and a plastic sheet overlay. Clear coat solvents would probably dissolve the plastic film.
I do not make these buttons as a profession or business. Just a part time hobby for my own enjoyment. So I am no expert on the ink chemistry - but I do know the home/office printer inks are not stabile over time. Some of the businesses in the button making industry do use more stabile inks. I do not have access to the those inks or the printing machines to apply them.
Maybe a water base acrlyc laquer with a UV absorber might work, if such a product exists. Let us know if you do find something that works. In normal use worn on a jacket, vest or hat, these buttons will last a few years before the ink fading is evident.
If the participants of the NJSTOC determine these buttons were a good idea, the other STOC events may want to do something similiar. Buttons and decals can be custom ordered from many professional sources. The downside is small custom orders end up to be a bit pricey per piece.

Saturday Route Road Conditions Alert
SteveST1300,
I drove up Milbrook Road north of Blairstown today. I do not often drive home this way. Much to my surprise, the entire length of Milbrook Road all the way to the US Forest Boundary is freshly oiled and graveled. I talked the mailman on that route and he said they started last week at the north end and finished the oil and gravel at the south end on Monday.
The Saturday Route picks up on the north end of Milbrook Road off of Birch Ridge Road. That will give us about 2 miles of loose gravel. The current road condition is a little dicey. There is loose gravel in the middle of the road, in the middle of each lane and at the shoulders. The sections if each lane that are now packed are fine to ride a moderate speeds - but we will need to stay out of the loose stuff.
Unfortunately, there is no route around this section if you want to keep the neat roads from Milbrook Village up to Walpack in the route. Sand Pond Road shows on the map as intersecting with Milbrook Road at the north end of the oil and gravel section. But the Forest Service closed egress to Milbrook Road from Sand Pond Road years ago.
Just thought I would let you know so you can plan for a slow but hiccup in the Saturday Route.

Hi to all NJSTOCers. I've just checked-in at the EconoLodge. Nice place BTW - Steve is right about that.

If anyone is still looking for accommodation here, then please note that I have a non-smoking twin-bedded room/lodge with 2 x double beds therein. So if anyone still wants to come along to the Meet - any night, i.e. tonight (Thu-19); tomorrow (Fri-20) or the last night (Sat-21) - and is looking for a bed, then I have one going spare.

We could split any or all the overnight tariff cost(s).

Note further that absolute priority will be given to female members who enquire about this outstandingly special offer!! ... :D

See ya'll tomorrow + Saturday.

I have just finished setting up camp at Swartswood State Park. You Texans only think you have a lot of deer out there. Coming into this park I saw far more deer than I did at Kerrville. Holy smokes every open field had herds of them!!! Anyhow I'll see you NJers in the AM. Mac

I hope you guys and gals had a great ride today without incident. I enjoyed meeting you all at the diner this morning. Sorry I couldn't join you, but family comes first. To the crew at Blairstown, thanks for escort up. Ride safe this weekend and watch out for the deer, bear, and gravel. I saw all three on the way home from Port Jervis.

I had a super time in Bob's group today. We were in NJ, NY and PA. There's some really great roads up here, lots of twisty, rolling hills, and some really neat little towns with some fabulous old homes. Well after all the pizza for supper its time for this old timer to hit the sack. Night all.

FINALLY we have landed back home safe and sound, if a bit exhausted and a lot behind schedule. It was a great trip!:)

MAN O MAN, I wish we were out there with you guys as we should have been, Dawn and I are bumming about missing riding and hanging out with everyone!!!

The weather seems to be real nice up my way today, so I hope it's the same for you guys. If there was just a bit more time, I'd have grabbed the bayb SV and shot down to hook up with you all for the last of the route, sigh. The Bandit has a bald rear that needs changing, so Dawn couldn't come then anyway.

Pictures! I surely want pictures!!! :) :) :) Rubber down guys, I hope your having a great time!

Ladies and Gentlemen,
It was a pleasure to meet you all at my first STOC event. You certainly are a great group of riders. A special thank you to SteveST1300 and Cart_T for the organizing the event and planning the routes. The roads were fantastic and so was the weather.

Well Carl we certainly missed you two as well.As you may have seen by now the event went very well. The weather was just perfect! So enough of the chit chat for now I will post some pictures. These are from the Friday ride. We had a great group. Once again I want to thank Bob (Bluestormer, and Billxp) Bill for helping out and leading groups. The event would not have gone as well without your help. Also thanks to all who showed up. This was the first time putting on an event like this for me and to have so many great people show up was amazing. I will start planning for next year!:03biker:

What a bizzare morning it has been!!!! I woke up and looked at my alarm clock and it said 2:56, so I got up and broke camp, mounted up and turned on Gretchen and told her to take me Home. She went through the normal stuff and up comes arrival time of 7:38AM!!! I look at the clock on the ST and it says 01:47. Somehow when I looked at my alarm I must have covered the 1 when I pushed the light button and it looked like 0256 when in fact it was 12:56. Any how I figured my bed was already packed and I was up and about, so I headed SW for home. As I left the park, I saw many deer along the roads. The PIAA 910's really allow me to see them farther away than the regular headlight, so really had no close calls.

Just north of Blairstown, I rounded a sweeping right hander on NJ 521 and saw a BLACK BEAR amble across the road from a big farm on my right into the brush on my left. The Park I camped in said I was in bear country, but I really didn't think much of it. I know I was in bear country now.

I got on I 80 and headed west and at the toll booth I was charged $1.50 in stead of $.75 because I had a 3rd axle with the Unigo!!!! I told the guy that I only had three wheels and was less than a car. He said I have to charge you for three axles. POed??? Naw not toooo much.

So the rest of he morning was uneventful except for at 45 degrees in PA finally pulling over and donning my electrics!!!! Geeeezzz did I get chilly!!!!

Pictures included: are a raccoon in the campground that was a bit addled. It just kept walking around in circles. Keith gets the long distance award. Fearless leader Bob, John, and Nelson on Friday. And the youngest STer of the day Emily treating Dad, Todd to a parking lot race day.

That thought entered my mind as I photographed it. It circled for over two hours in the area across the road from where I was camped in daylight.

Here are a few more pictures. Keith's Pan under the Banner our long distance award winner! Todd in a familiar pose, Our ST convert Tony's Harley he kept up all day and didn't break down once, but once Sandy sat on a wing and Tony sat on an ST we may have converted them both, Bill and Mark, and members of the group discussing the days events

Made it home safe thanks to the fine escort provided by Nelson, Bob and Mary.
The wildlife made NJSTOC interesting, brainless cagers made it dangerous. Thanks Steve for putting on a wonderful event. Your efforts, coupled with Carl's uncanny ability to find superb roads which don't show up on any maps, made this an unforgettable weekend. Bob, thanks again for being a superb leader. Todd and Emily, thanks for sharing. Bill and Daniel, great to see you back on the ST. Thanks one and all for adding to richness of this experience.
I include one photo, for now, of the three groups that we formed and an example of the type of road we traveled.

Thank you Steve and Carl for organizing this great weekend and thank you all participants for making this such a wonderful event!! BTW Kempo, I don't think that lady will ever forgive you for that horn blast. :D

This was my first STOC and my first multi-day ride event, after having done 2 RTE's. Actually, this felt a little like a Ride To EAT :eat1: :eat2: :chef2: too: I don't think I have ever eaten so much diner food and so many burgers in so few days.

I also made it home safely, by about 4:10pm. Mellow, you need to teach me how to do this properly, because it took me a whole hour to pack all my stuff at the camp site.
I would like a bag for the tent that isn't so exactly fitting, so that you have to re-fold the tent to make it fit in the darn thing.
It was my first time camping in 12 years and my first time ever moto-camping, so I am a little out of practice.

When I get a chance, I will post some of my pics.

Big thanks to the folks that make these things happen (Steve, Carl, Bob...):bow1: . This was a fantastic way for Nancy and I to finish off our week and a half tour - 2500 miles! And after talking to Nelson about New Hampshire, we'll probably see some of you guys there in September.

Our ride out to I84 with Todd this morning was fantastic, Rt 516 I think - nice sweepers, no traffic, great weather.
