YOOPER SToc July 13-14-15 2007

The weekend of July 13th 14th and 15th in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula YOOPERStoc, this is an informal gathering of riders, meet and greet, travel to the UP. Take in the Great Lakes of North America. Come and meet some old friends or make new ones, Yoopers as we locals are called comes from living in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan thus shortened to the UP by many, finally came to be Yoopers. As the people on the eastern end of the peninsula are called fudgies by many due to the fudge that is made there, and of course the trolls, the people that live in the lower peninsula of Michigan because they live below the BRIDGE, the Mackinaw bridge that is.
To be a transplant to our peninsula and finally called a yooper is a rite of passage to be accepted into our community. This is a melting pot of ethnic origins due to the early mineral boom and the jobs that it created.
There will be no organized rides, do your own thing, come and go as you please I am including some things that may be of interest for you to see from the eastern end of the UP to the western end and the Keweenaw.
Last year it was a RTE and we went to Rodney’s for the Gudighi sandwich, (picture included), and the up north lodge is a half mile from my home, if you prefer that style of meal. (web site included) On Sunday’s at the Northland Inn they have a great breakfast and there is also a couple of local restaurants in the small town of Gwinn.
There is one motel in town 906 346 7901
Sawyer is about 7 miles from town 906 346 3355 they have 1 2 and 4 bedroom suites
Campgrounds there are several federal forest campgrounds in the area (primitive and a short ride down a dirt road)
Horseshoe lake campground has showers etc. 906 346 9937 they have a group camping area and I believe some rental units.
I have some limited camping in my yard N 46 15.409 W 087 29.086 Camp fire any night someone is here. Dannyk

Thanks Danny, but the SO has to be close to a head, as she makes many trips during the night. And no I haven't got her to go in the bushes yet.

The Big Lake (SUPERIOR)

Some interesting facts about the biggest of the great lakes

By surface area it is the largest body of fresh water in the world, covering more than 31,700 square miles.
It is the third largest body of fresh water, by volume with a volume of 3 quadrillion gallons, (3,000,000,000,000,000) or about 2,900 cubic miles.
It contains about 10 percent of the worlds fresh surface water.
It contains over half of all the water contained in the five great lakes.
It has a retention time-- the length of time the water stays in the lake-- of 191 years.
It is 382 miles long and 160 miles wide.
It has 1,826 miles of shoreline.
The deepest spot is 1,332 feet deep.
If the water contained in Lake Superior were to flow out over both North and South
America, it would be one foot deep.
Just thought you might like to know, something to think about as you travel this great country of ours.

This event is definitely on my radar screen (a nice bright blip). The UP is an easy ride from the Twin Cities (MN) area. I have relatives near Crystal Falls so I've made the trip several times in the cage. It's way past time to do it on 2 wheels.

Just a heads, there is a small detour around Gwinn, the main street is all tore up for new water and sewer lines, will be for most of the summer. Getting things done before next years town anniversary. It will only effect those coming up on M35, but the detour is well marked. There will be 17 miles of construction on M 35 north of Menominee also, at least that was what the signs and barrels indicated on our ride to Road America. Danny:biker:

I might be a go for this, if you can put up with a stupid newbie like me. Was planning on being up by Traverse City then anyway. Might just head on up and see one of the prettiest areas in the country.

I'm a newbie to, but the ride from south ga. to the UP sounds "VERY INTERESTING"

Another newbie here. I'm getting psyched about this trip.

I'm staying in Muskegon, MI right now due to an extended company project.
So, I'm thinking of taking the SS Badger across from Ludington, MI to Manitowoc, WI, then driving up from there.

http://www.ssbadger.com/content.aspx?Page=Schedule

Looks like there's a 7:55PM sail time, arrive around 11PM. Cross time is 4 hrs, but you change time zones. $32 one way for motorcycles.

Crash at a hotel, then do the ride up the next morning.

Here's a Google Map (Hope it pastes OK).

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=Manitowoc,+WI&daddr=suamico,wi+to%3AN+46+15.409+W+087+29.086+to% 3AMarquette,+MI+to%3Agrand+island,+mi+to%3AManisti que,+MI+to%3AMackinaw+City,+MI&mrcr=5&sll=45.602509,-84.567261&sspn=2.567263,5.125122&ie=UTF8&ll=45.328979,-86.385498&spn=2.579746,5.125122&z=8&om=1

Then after the festivities and some exploring on Superior, ride back down across the Mackinaw Bridge on the way back.

Was thinking of taking of taking the 13th off work and taking the ferry the night of the 12th. If anyone wants to join for part of that ride, LMK.

Karl, read the SS Badger link real good, its 32 bucks for the M/C and there is a passenger fee also that applies. I think it will run you close to a hundred bucks to use the ferry. Danny

True, but it knocks a good distance off the trip (not that this is always a good thing) and I get to see new territory rather than retrace. I'll make up my mind when the time gets closer.

Built this yesterday for those of you that don't want resturant food and would prefere to cook your own snack etc. Its over the fire pit and there is plenty of good hardwood for cooking over/night fire for tire kicking. The UP North Lodge is just over a half mile away from my home, Rodney's is in Gwinn for those that may want to try a Gudighi or pizza, I'll have morning coffee, water, and soft drinks diet/regular varieties. Wish I could make it.

I just did a tour (2nites / 3 days) around Lake Superior & spent this past Sat nite in Marquette.

This coming weekend was no good for me or I would have stopped in. Maybe next year.

Beautiful countryside. I'll be back and take a few side trips this time - and figure out what a pastie is. Everybody's selling them - I asked my wife but said she did want a set. ;-)

Have fun

Lets discuss Yooper Stuff Thursday night. I'm planning on being outside the Washington County Fairgrounds pavillion at 5:30 pm. I figure we can either ride to Sawmill Inn to eat, or just stay there and enjoy Beemerfest. I'm thinking group dynamics will decide which.

OK, first Danny K deserves a very big round of applause from all the folks that attended YooperSToc. He had enough hot dogs and buns, potato chips and pop and water and rides and directions and locations of pastys and cudighis and his bride made a delicious apple bar thingy that was great. THANKS Danny, it was good to finaly meet the coffee thread starter, and he really let us all camp in his yard!!!! Showers in the AM or PM.

I had a great time meeting new members and seeing some others again. The ride to Copper Harbor was a little damp and chilly, but forgetaboutit, his son Chris, mnwing and I made it up there and back after backtracking in and around Marquette for a while. Lot of interesting sights and a meal of pastys for all of us. That is an interesting dish and tasty also. If you have never visited the UP of MI, make room on your travel schedule to do so. I'll post some pictures after I get a nap or night sleep, one or both. Mac

Danny.....Thanks again for hosting an outstanding event. Got home around 4 thanks to a major accident on 94 east of Hudson, and the detour I took to get around it. 1299.1 miles according to the GPS, so guess it was a pretty decent ride.

It was wonderful to see old friends and to meet all the new people that I got to meet for the first time who attended this event.

I hope all of you enjoyed this as much as I did and again a great big thanks to Danny for putting this together.

Mac thanks for breakfast Sat morning and suggesting the ride to Copper Harbor. The weather wasn't the best but you, Rich and Chris were great to ride with.

I hope to see many of you again at WESTSToc and WISToc.

Thanks to Danny for hosting the event! He tirelessly gave of himself, his property, his garage (invaluable for those underprepared for wet weather camping [me]), his firewood, and everything else! He didn't even get to do much riding because he was more concerned about being there so nobody would arrive to an empty property. Hats off! :bow1:

Well, this STOC newbie had a fantastic time! Thanks to all for the advice (bike won't start in gear and with the kickstand down...duh!), encouragement (thanks Steve, for sticking back with me on Rt. 35, giving up a chance to tear down that great road at warp speed with Sue and the others :yr1:), and camaraderie.

I decided to round out my trip back to Troll-land (the lower part of Michigan) with a side trip up to Whitefish Point and the Shipwreck Museum. Coming back down 123 I thought, heck, I'm so close to Sault St. Marie, gotta see the Soo Locks. At 500+ miles, not quite an iron butt, but at least an iron butt cheek. :sbs1:

Thanks to Danny, I even came home with some goodies...an ST-Owner.com keychain and a license plate frame. Way Cool! :banr1:
