View Full Version : Indiana Tech meeting?
Earache
03-06-2007, 09:21 AM
If there's any interest, I'd be happy to host a tech meet at my home. I have loads of tools, pneumatic bike lift and enough knowledge ot get myself into some serious trouble.
Also have a good friend 3 miles away with a pneumatic tire changer - sure he'd change tires for cheap if anyone needs that. He was Service Manager / mechanic at a local Honda dealer for over 10 years, so we could always ask him questions as well.
Good time for oil changes, brake pad replacement and other Spring time repairs.
Anyone????

If it ends up just being the two of us, feel free to come down any weekend that I'm home and wrench on your scooter.

Date? You want to let this thread ride for a bit to gauge interest and when others can come? or just set a date and whoever can make it comes? I am free except for April 14(MoonSTOc).

Let's leave it up for a few days to see if anyone else is interested. If not, we'll pick a date that is easy for the both of us.
Need to do it sooner rather than later though.

Nice to have you Paul! How come no one wants to come to good ol' Indiana? Oh yeah, straight roads! If anyone wants to come and make a weekend of it I am sure a ride can be planned in the southern part of the state that would take some decent roads. There are some good roads around Nashville, IN in Brown County.

I'm free any but the final weekend of the month. Eric, If I recall, the last time I rode to your place (last year...you fabbed some lighting mounts for me) it was the coldest weather I'd ever ridden in.....gotta get it warmer before we soldier forth...grin!
STindy05

I am free on any of them, which ever one works out best with you guys. I have been thinking of doing a J&M install(just short on money right now). Maybe in the fall. I don't know much about the Audiovox but would like to see how it goes on!

I have subscribed to this thread to follow it to see how it shapes up. I also have another audiovox to install, Installed one last fall that was DOA and pretty much lost intrest in the project after stripping the thing off. With more than one to install and have a two data points to compare might help eliminate the HUA factor incase their was heartache. Am about 450 miles southwest in springfield, mo. So if it shapes up I am in, weather & work permitting.

Eric-
Great idea. Do you remeber making me a spacer for the rear shock spring a while back? I'still need to get it installed. I may have another item or two that I have'nt had time to get to... We've moved twice since last August.
It would be cool to meet some other ST riders from around here.
How much of a crowd do you want? I could mention this to the HSTA guys I ride with. You tell me. I'm in Avon now but I love getting back to Greenwood when I can. Thanks
Mike

Mike - If we had 6-7 guys, that would be manageable. More than that and we might be tripping over each other in my shop (it's not all that big).
But if someone really wants to come, we'll make room for them. Go ahead and see if any of the HSTA ST crew wants to tag along.

racer-by final weekend do you mean the 24/25 or 31/1?
Eric- Little response on a date. What do you think?
I really don't have much to do. I guess it would not hurt to change the oil after the winter storage. I would like to come and hang out though and see how the other things are done. I am not very mechanical, so maybe I will even learn a thing or two!

The 24/25 would be preferable... again, my interest would be if someone 'knowledgeable' could assist in the installation of my CC unit. I can attest to Eric's fab skills though...they are well worth the trip in itself!

If anyone needs anything - like oil, filters, etc - let me know ahead of time and I'll get it for you so you don't have to haul it on your bikes.
I get a decent deal on stuff from my local Honda dealer and will get OEM filters, Honda oils or other oils as you require.

Eric,
I have installed the Audiovox CC on my 05 ST13 and have a request to assist another 05 owner who lives near you. You probably know him, HSTA member Dave L. In any case, I am 3 hours west of Indy, but could ride over and help with the cruise installations if you want. I will be going to Moab the week of April 15, but otherwise, I should be available.

I PM'd directions to everyone that expressed interest in coming over for the Tech Day. If you did not receive directions and need them, let me know.
Drinks:
Let me know what you'd like to have on hand as far as drinks go and I'll have the garage fridge stocked. Be specific with what you want. Diet, regular, Coke, Pepsi or whatever. We don't drink coffee, but I can have some ready for those that do. Again, let me know what brand you'd like.
Foods:
As above - let me know what you want or else suffer my tastes!

Putt, I have some Optilux mounted below the mirrors with brackets that Eric (earache) fabricated. You can check them out if you'd like.
As for drinks, if its as cold as some March mornings can be it may be good to have some hot coffee handy. Otherwise, any soft drink works for me. I'm not a beer-and-ride person so no alky necessary.

Newbluest - I have a power bleeder for brake fluid changes. Piece of cake to do - I've done it hundreds of times.

I too am needing to do a hydraulic fluid change...especially the clutch. I have not done it before on this bike and my clutch does not feel right to me. Maybe some experienced people can tell me if mine is having issues?
Please send directions if you have space.

Dunno if Moose still has the Pickle Bike or not. He retired it a year or so ago and bought a used white / silver ST and then promptly wadded it up in North Carolina. I saw it several weeks ago at my friend's shop- looked like it was about ready to go.

Come on down! I have a friend that is a Honda mechanic. Might not do it free, but we could have the bikes all ready to go and have him do the valves. Most of the work in a valve adjustment is getting the crap off the bike - tupperware, valve covers, etc - and then putting it back on.
If there's enough interest, we could line the bikes up and have him run through them all.
Should I ask him how much he'll charge?

Spoke to my mechanic friend, he'll do valve adjustments for $30 each.
You'll need to strip the plastic off of the bike and unbolt the valve covers, he'll do the valves and you'll have to bolt all of the plastics back on.
Let me know if you want this done or not. If so, he'll show up around noon to do them. He'll also help with anything else and will be available for questions.
He ran the service department at a Honda dealership for 10 years and is quite familiar with the bikes.

Don't know what good an "inspection" would do. This is for an adjustment...if needed.
Trays of shims are no big deal, he has plenty. I'm not sure what kind of shims are needed for the ST - but it's not my job to know :) . He's always done mine in the past on all of the bikes I've had. My ST has always been really close to spec, not requiring a lot of work to be done in the 60,000+ miles I've put on it. But if one valve is out, I'd like to have it corrected.

Hey Guys-
Talked to Reuben (the mechanic from Saturday) about how much he charges for various repairs. He'll do stuff cheaper than just about anywhere and is beyond anal about doing it right.
I asked him to put together a little price sheet for us, here it is....
Service Price Labor Parts estimate
Oil change $37 $34
Brake fluid flush $25 $6.00
Clutch fluid $12.50 $3.00
Valve Adjustment $100
Full service $250 $40-$150
Adjust steering head bearings $80
Replace steering head bearings $200 $50
Rear end oil change $12.50 $5.00
Replace barke pads (per caliper) $15 $30-$50
Change fork oil $80 $15.00
Replace fork seals $200 $40
Coolant flush and fill $35.00 $10.00
Tire changes (on bike)
Front $25
Rear $50
Tire changes (off bike) $10 each rim
I know it's kinda spammy to post this, but if you're not able to do this stuff yourself, it can be a good deal. Especially the tire changes. Buy your tires on line for cheap and have him balance and install them for a price that few others will touch.
Reuben lives about 5 miles from me, PM me if you need his cell number to get an appointment.
I'd be happy to help anyone out with anything else, any time that you need it done. If I'm home, feel free to stop by and use my shops area, lift, tools, etc.

There is an awsome ma and pa place in Norman, IN that serves the biggest pork tenderloin I have ever seen. They won't even fit on the plate. The platter with drink is around $8. It is a must see (eat) if you like tenderloins. If you ride 135 South to 58 West it is at 38.952536, -86.274278. Maybe we could meet somewhere in Nashville around 11am and ride down there for lunch. If you all want to have lunch at the massive tenderloin place in Norman then I would suggest meeting somewhere like McDonalds parking lot in Nashville around 10:00am - 10:30am. Well, it's kinda southwest of Greenwood, near Center Grove High School.
Easy directions:
465 to I-65 South
Exit #99 - Greenwood Main Street exit, head west on Main Street for 4.5 miles
Main dead ends into Route 135, turn south (left)
135 South for 2.5 miles, McDonald's will be on your right at the intersection of 135 and Stones Crossing Road

Well, 135 can't compare to a ride through the Smokey Mountains. I love the Cherohalla Skyway, Foothills Parkway and of course the Dragon (that is if Tennessee is done with their little marshall law thing).
If you make it though I would like to see how your drivers seat sets. I just got back from a 660 mile two day trip and the seat was by far the thing most lacking in comfort on the whole bike. Talk about 'Monkey Butt' ... So far everone I have read about loves that Spencer Mod'ed seat but there is nothing like sitting in one yourself to decide. Maybe there are others on the ride that have done the Spencer lowering and comfort mod as well.

If I make it we can switch, I will take you stock seat for a portion of the trip. I did not have him lower my seat any as I am 6'3" and have no trouble with reaching the ground. Keep in mind he modded the seat for my needs also and yours may be different. The more detail you give him when sending him the seat the better he can make it for you.
The trip south is a last minute thing, not even an idea till Sunday evening when he said this would be the first time in 20 years he did not make it down there. I said if he wanted I could go this weekend but after that I would be helping Dad farm. He was going to see how things went at work and let me know if he could get away or not.

Hi,
Just joined the membership, and noticed your post from earlier this year, about your tech meeting. Lemme know if you have another one in '08.

Looks like it's a go for me Sunday am. Anyone mind if my brother tags along on his new ST he just got Tuesday? Oh yeah... it's a Triumph ST1050. He's still breaking it in so he should be able to keep up. :) LOL. See ya'll Sunday.

well I made it down, but I was a little late  and everyone had left already.
I did go ahead and ride down 135 and 446. Really a nice ride down that way.
I,m sorry I missed everyone!! I had just bought my 1100 at the beginning of summer and was looking forward to talking and riding with you.
If you're coming up this way (South Bend) give a holler.

Cannot believe we did not see you. How late were you? I think it was 9:30 when we left the Mcdonalds. I could be wrong about that though. That sounds like the same route that we took, 135 to 58 to 446. We all kind of went our own way at 58 and 446. Sorry we missed you! Long ride down not to catch up with us.

I stopped at a station about two miles down the road and asked a local cop if he had seen your group. He said I was about ten minutes behind, but with traffic building up I couldn't catch up.
Still a pretty nice ride tho !!:-D
I had 489 miles when I got home.

Unbelievable!:hat1:
I've been following this thread and wishing I could have gone too.:(
Sorry to hear of your bad luck there Lost Dutchman. I would have ridden with you (wanted to very much) but I had a prior obligation. I used to live down in that area and just love the country side! Doesn't seem like Indiana does it?
Sounds like everyone had a great time!:clap2: Maybe I'll be able to make it the next time!:shrug2:

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed the ride and meeting all the other ST riders.
Could the guys who took photos of the bikes lined up post the pictures? I'm sure that others would like to see them as well. Thanks.

I had a blast yesterday - -wish I'd have stayed a bit longer though. I missed the guy that was coming to my house so I really didn't need to leave early after all.
Lost Dutchman - man, so sorry we missed you. I thought for sure we hung around long enough for everyone to get to the McD's. Anytime you wanna come down again, let me know and I'll meet ya someplace. And it's kinda scary that the cop you asked remembered seeing us. Dunno if that's good or not.
Other than waiting for Landon to catch up all day, I had a really good ride. Mike and I blasted Old 37 on the way home and that was pretty good as well. Started to get a bit hot towards the end, but still a good day for a ride.

Hey guys,
It was nice getting together to ride with the guys from this forum. Sorry ya missed us Dutch. That was a fair amount of miles you rode there. We'll see ya next time. Your right about the cop thing Eric... I don't think I'm crazy about those guys remembering us. That was a pretty good fly on old 37.
Good ridin' with ya again Landon... a little different than 20 hours straight!
It was really cool riding with a bunch of ST's. I enjoyed having the guy (Brandon I think) on the VFR there too seeing as that may be my next bike. You sure could tell he'd been riding with Eric... no chicken strips. I'll try to get the pictures posted in the next day or two Dave... the camera is out on the bike and I need to hit the sack.
See ya'all on the road,
Mike

Has anyone talked about an Indiana Tech Meeting for 08?
I'd be willing to host if anyone is interested.
I am not 100% technical on the ST yet, I have only had an st for 4 months. But would be willing to host a tech meeting is we can arrange one and some expert are willing to help!
