View Full Version : 666 STOC?

George

I see that 666 STOC is not on the events list. Have I been cancelled? ;^)

Hannagan Meadow, north of Clifton and south of Alpine, AZ on US-191 old US-666.) This is basically just a lunch run, but most will have to overnight at least once to get there.

Think of this as Moonshine West, with twisties. US-191 between Clifton and Alpine is prolly the best road in Arizona.

http://www.hannaganmeadow.com/

No formal arrangements have been made but I'll set it up on my way east in April

Dates: 7-7-07 and 8-8-08

I was on that road through Wilcox to Eager (and the Dodge Phelps Morenci mine) about 5 years ago on my way to Canada. It was a great road - especially the Gold Wing we saw in a tree! (oops! missed that corner)

Notice on the Hannagan Meadows web site that they don't do lunch during the summer. Might have to find a near-by alternative. Anything in Alpine will prolly work, but Hannagan's meadow is the Moonshine of route 666!

More info to follow.

BTW, any more input on the new T-shirt logo?

There's a great little diner in Alpine.

Last time I was there was several years ago but the food was good and the service was great.

If I'm in AZ in July, I'll be there (thinking about maybe doing a 48/10 this summer but haven't decided on the dates yet).

George, as much as I would like to join you folks, Wing Ding always falls on the first week in July. I'll be out West, but a bit to the north in Billings MT. And unlike the BBQ deal in Texas, the SO will be with me for this one!!! That is if she is still my SO by then!!!!!

George or Bob might should handle this, but...

I'll probably spend the night in STafford. I'm thinking I'll take one of my patented 'short cuts' and wobble around South and East of Phoenix Friday. End plan is down from Globe to STafford.

I do know that there is a couple of Motels (a 6, I think) and a restaurant or two at the Wilcox exchange, for those coming off the slab. Benson probably has better accomodations...

My only commitment is to set up lunch. Lazy? Yes! BTDT? Yes, 2!

If I can't get lunch at Hannagan Meadows Lodge, we'll prolly end up in Alpine. It's the nearest civilization. I recommend STafford/Clifton on the south end (Rode Inn in Clifton worked fine last year) and Springerville/Eabar on the north end. (I've stayed there at various places.) I plan to be at the lunch stop (TBA) from about 11 to 1 on 7-7-07.

More to come,

Good news from Hannagan's Meadow:

There WILL be lunch at
Hannagan Meadow Lodge (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/www.hannaganmeadow.com)
on
7-7-07
(Attend this event - click here (http://www.st-owners.com/forums/calendar.php?do=getinfo&e=116&day=2007-7-7&c=1))

They are gonna fire up the grill starting May 28 and will have hot lunch (basic burgers and dogs with sides) every Saturday and Sunday. So, we're on for lunch on 7-7-7.

Make yur best choice for accomodations at Safford or Eagar or wherever, and join me for lunch between
noon and 2.
I plan to arrive around 11 and stay thru the lunch break.

Accomodations are available at the Lodge (9 rooms?) and some of the cabins will sleep up to 8. As of last Saturday, only 2 cabins had been reserved.

I need to get a head count, and prolly really ought'a have a web page, ala MoonSTOC. Any help out there?

Ok, I'm going to have to admit to some forum ignorance here. I don't know how to sign up for an event. I searched but didn't find the instructions. I know Mellow posted them but I'll be darned if I can find them. Maybe that would be a good sticky on the event forum?

Find the 'Front Page" of the site. Events will be listed on the left hand side, scroll down, find 666SToc, click attend. This one is really easy, from there. It's a lunch count only...They have to know how many hot doggies to order:)

Ok, I think I know a way to make this happen. I have some friends that live on the North East side of Phoenix. If I leave on the 6th and preposition myself in Phoenix I can make this awesome ride and never spend a dime on lodging. I think this might just make it work. Now to find out if my friends will be in town that weekend.

I've taken the liberty to plan out a ride route from the NE Phoenix area (ignore the details). So what do you think, is this a workable plan? According to MS Streets this will put me in Hangman Medows at 11:11AM (am I a master planner or what?).

Dana,

Know that riding from Phoenix to Clifton takes at least 4 hours at speeds that will keep you looking over your shoulder and as far ahead as you can see (lots of hills and curves will keep you nervous too).

The ride up to Hannagan's meadow is not one that you can rush... I'm suggesting that you're fooling yourself if you think you can make the lunch without staying somewhere either near Clifton or near Show Low...

Safford or Clifton...

Mark

Raven
04-13-2007, 12:41 AM
Nothing much in Clifton. Your best bet is Safford. There's an Econo Lodge (http://www.placesofamerica.com/hotels/100/1001509_Econo_Lodge_Arizona_Safford.html), Comfort Inn (http://www.choicehotels.com/ires/en-us/html/HotelInfo?hotel=AZ042&promo=gglocal), Best Western (http://book.bestwestern.com/bestwestern/selectHotel.do;jsessionid=CAF25E853DB452D0FF9ED27D 9770E4EA), Quality Inn and Days Inn (http://www.destinationsafford.com/) in Safford.

There's also camping available at Granville, AZ (http://www.camparizona.com/Campsites/WhiteMtnsCampsites/Granville.htm) (just north of Morenci/Clifton). One can also camp at Hannigan's Meadow (http://www.camparizona.com/Campsites/WhiteMtnsCampsites/Hannagan.htm).

There are also cabins in Alpine for those that would prefer to head south to Hannigan's Meadow (not to mention cabins at Hannigan's Meadow).

For a real "roadtrip" feel you can also stay at the WigWam Motel (http://www.galerie-kokopelli.com/wigwam/) in Holbrook! :D

Mark, it wouldn't be the first time I was fooling myself. I was planning on hitting the road and start rolling at 0600, that leaves a generous 5 hours to get there. If I'm reading you right then the confusion has to do with the direction of travel. In my loop, it was my intention to travel clockwise not counter-clockwise. I expect that makes a difference. MS Streets has me arriving a little before 6pm back in Phoenix with a hour and a half for lunch.

Does that make sense? I've never traveled these roads before so I am asking for advice from those that have.

Thanks,

Mark
04-13-2007, 10:15 AM
That makes a *lot* more sense.

I like riding as I climb more than riding down hill through beautiful scenery and twisties...
Counter clockwise for me.

Raven

Clockwise should work well for you. From PHX to Payson on 87 is nice and easy - good sweepers on a 4-lane divided hwy. You can move at a fairly decent clip and not have to worry about passing the slooowwww RVs as your climbing to Payson. Sometimes the road is covered with LEOs other times it's practically empty. It's an easy 90mph+ road (not that I'd ever do that) on non-LEO days! :D From Payson to Showlow is kind of luck of the draw. Some days you can book pretty well but other days it's covered up with RVs and slow movers with limited passing opportunities. Also be very aware of ELK (a riding buddy got killed on that road when he hit an elk). Your route from ShowLow to Alpine is usually fairly empty so you can move at a fine pace along there. Hannigan's Meadow to Morenci is the really twisty part and you should allow around 2 hours to make the 60 miles (especially if there are any cars out). 70 from Safford back to PHX is, again, luck of the draw. It does tend to be fairly consistently patroled by LEOs and there tends to be a good bit of traffic so your pretty much stuck at the speed limit with limited passing opportunities.

Your route is totally do-able and you should make lunch with no problems.

BTW, 60 from Globe to ShowLow is nice road as well - Salt River Canyon has lots of great sweepers but also tends towards RVs and limited passing.

.

I have to admit that part of the confusion could have been caused by my MS Streets file. When I loaded it off the web it changed the route from my original plan as pictured in the attached jpg file. For some reason it rerouted using 60 vice 87. What I did was reopen the file and added lots more way-points so it forced the route I originally intended.

Mark if you were looking at the MS Street file vice just looking at the jpg file, that would explain why you and Raven were on different pages.

The question I have is if it is possible to do the route from either direction. If Bob, Tom and Ray are going to spend the night in Stafford then I would love to hook up with them for the ride to Hannagan Meadow vice riding solo the entire route. I might even see what it's like to ride behind Tom if that's possible.

I guess that might depend on what time Bob, Tom and Ray plan on leaving in the morning. I'm pretty sure that level of planning hasn't happened yet. But MS Streets says that I can be in Stafford 9am if I leave Phoenix at 6am

Raven
04-15-2007, 08:43 PM
Hey Dana,

You definitely can do it in the other direction and hook up with folks in Safford for the cruise up. Be aware that it's good to allow between 2-3 hours to make it up to Hannagan Meadow from Clifton (especially if it's your first time up the road). Obviously one can take it faster if they've an idea of what to expect.

Depending on where you are in Phoenix and the number of RVs out, allow between 3 to 3.5 hours to make it to Safford on 60/70.

Remember, it's the Saturday after the 4th of July so there's likely to be a lot of RVs on the move!

For those of you coming from the east, in New Mexico, I would recommend going west from Caballo Lake, on 152, through Hilsboro, Kingston and into Silver City, NM. You wont be disapointed! Then head out 180 to Mule Creek and west on 78 into AZ, Clifton and Morenci. Then you will be doing the fun part of 666 south to north, which I think is the better way.

Dan,

Other than trying to make plans to stay for free in Phoenix that fell through I haven't made any plans. If you would like to split a hotel room for a night or two I'm game. I was hoping that Tom, Ray and Bob would solidify plans so we could match ours to theirs. If we plan first, I guess, they will just have to match us. I assume you read the rest of this thread, was thinking of getting a room in some town that starts with an "S", can't remember if it's suppose to have a "T" in it or not, but I think that should be our goal. I was planning on taking Friday off and using it to get in the area. After that my plan was pretty weak. We can talk about it though.

Oh, buy the way George, 666STOC is fine by me, after all, what's in a name?

Hummm....I just might see if I could get a kitchen pass for that weekend. My only problem would be I can't leave Friday until around noon from San Bernardino (from work). You know, that little four letter word... :work2:

But I'm sure I could get into Safford by 9pm....

Because that (and the wife) is what is keeping me from being able to ride more! :work2:
