View Full Version : Front Tire Pressure

So I picked up the new ride tonight a 2007 Wing Navi edition and as the dealer was going through attempting to show me what all the switches do (all I wanted to do is start it and go for a ride but I was good and listened) he showed me the tire pressure chart but informed me to ignore the 36 lbs in the front tire and run 41 in both because in their experience it rides better. Anyone with thought on that?
Also this adjustable suspension has me confused as the book says 0 is the normal position. What do you guys run while solo? When two up? Just to find maybe a good starting point other than adjusting it each day until I figure what is best for me.
Thanks

Interesting questions... and congrats on the new ride...

I run my front at 36 and the rear at 41 as per the book. I can't honestly say that I think it needs improvement or could ride any better, at least not on the stock suspension. I'm sure you'll have read on some 'wing boards about front end low speed wobble which usually happens on slowing down. I know some people think a cure for this is to increase the front tire pressure, but that's with worn tires, not brand new ones.
The rear suspension pre-load I personally found easy to set because I can feel the difference in the bikes handling at different settings. Too low and the bike bounces over bumps, too high and it will skip when leant over on rough surfaces. Some people set them all the way up to max and leave them there. I don't. But before you can really decide where to start, you need to know where it starts loading up the rear shock. Yep, you'd expect that to be at 0 or 1 but it's not the same on all GW's due to manufacturing differences - I believe the amount of oil/air in the preload mechanism is the culprit.
With the bike on the center stand, put the suspension all the way down to zero. Now start to increase it, and you will hear a change in tone of the pump motor once it starts to load the suspension. Do it a few times, and once you know what you're listening for, see what number is set on the suspension. I'm lucky, mine starts loading at 1, but I've read of others that don't start loading until 10 or 11.
So, bearing in mind, mine loads at 1 and I'm not a big fella - 175 lbs... for riding solo I have mine set on 6. With Farkle on the back, adding about another 125 lbs, I have it set on 14. I will probably increase it more when I have the trailer hitched up - dang, I knew it needed 3 memory settings.
Just play around with it, if you feel like you're bouncing over bumps, stiffen it up a little, if you think it feels too hard, soften it.
Now, get them pics posted :D

I run 44-46 in both tires and the suspension all the way up.

Why? Seriously Mac, what did you discover that improves over the suggested settings?
Thanks,

I had a chat with the Metzler rep at Wing Ding a few years ago and he told me keeping the pressure up would keep the front tire from cuppping and he was right. I have been getting more mileage from my tires than most everyone on this board with the ST also. I keep the ST tire pressure high also. Don't know if the pressure is the reason or not, but it works for me.

I run 42/42 habit... LOL!!! Have suspension at 20 all the time... raises the rear of the bike for clearance. I had it set lower for a while but have dragged my centerstand over driveways

My Salesman recommended about the same as yours. He said to run 42 in the front and back. He said it gives a better ride and longer lifespan for the tires. HE has been riding GW for many years and is their most respected salesman for GW in the area. So I got to figure he must know what he is talking about.

Now the hard part will be to try to keep the odometers on both of them fairly equal.

Easy:
Mon - Fri ST goes to work and back
GL goes to dinner and back
Sat - ST goes to the hill country
Sun- GL goes to the hill country but the wife gets to go

I get a newspaper like ad from Chrischrome and Chromeworld about every quarter. They both have fair prices on GW related Farkles. I'm sure Dave is aware of them, but Mike you may not be. They are both on the web, so you may want to check them out.

VIP member at Wingstuff :D
Even over here in the UK with the shipping I save a bunch with them. The only thing that frustrates me about their site is that they don't tell you what items are in stock and which they have to get in - which always adds a delay... and did I mention... I hate waiting lol.
The VIP membership was hm, 35 dollars if I remember right... whatever it was I saved it on my first purchase and it's good for 12 months.
