View Full Version : ST1300 Model Year Differences?

Steven

Need a little help from the keepers of model year data.

I'm scrounging for a ST1300 and wondered if there are any "significant" updates from the 2003 model year to present worthy of discussion. (no need to mention and claimed "speed" differences regarding paint color(!)).

Trying to justify any price differential between the model years versus equipment. And....whether the temptation to move up from my '93 ST1100 is worth the coin. (already read the threads on that).

Thanks in advance for the help.

Color... 03 ABS has electric screen, non-ABS doesn't. 04 thru current, all have electric screen ABS/Non ABS. Some mods were done after 04 for heat... 04 had 2 recalls, none life threatining. The 05 is the prettiest and fastest  :)

Why would you say that? You obviously have no loyalty! Unless there's another secret in the works?! LOL

Well, there's not really much to mention, then.

There are days when I miss the 05... looks sweet to me next to Doob's 03

Mark,
I think I remember the front of the seat flap to prevent heat coming up when the seat is in all positions on my 2005. I know 06 and 07 have it.

Good day to all

In looking at ST1300 for sale I am trying to figure out, besides the colors (daw) are there any significant changes that happened between the 2003-2006?

thanks

Somewhere in there the electric windshield became standard on the non ABS bike. 2004?

In 2004 the electric windshield became standard, a heat shield was added to the lower cowl, and there is some undetermined change to the fuel injection system. The fuel injection change is only alluded to by significan r&d done to provide an aftermarket remap settable by an aftermarket module. They got a 2003 model year box to work that did not work with the 2004 and susequant models. There was a modification to the grounding I think in 05 and previous years were recalled to make this electrical modification. All North American models were introduced in 2003 with substantial bracing from the 2002 model released in Europe. That is about it. All models are subject to owner modifications not cataloged except on this forum.

In the U.S. 03 and 04 had recalls that are fixed free by Honda if they haven't already been done.
The electric windshield was available only on ABS '03s and is on all ST1300s since then.
The '04 and newer has a heat shield built into the lower cowl.

Good luck.

You may want to look at the 03,04, and 06 models. The 05 is very fast and could get you in trouble with the :policeST: !!!!

Really, the main difference is color. Get one with ABS and you will be pleased.

I just bought an 03, and was amazed to find it DID NOT have a 4-way flasher hazard warning light system. (But, 03 1300A's do! Go figure...)

Even my 02 Sportster has that basic system.

I miss it cause I use 4-ways as I approach toll both here, most of which take EZ-Pass as well as cash. People just roll on thru em like there's no tomorrow.

I would hope Honda came to their senses and added 4-ways to all models post 03.

But I can't say for sure...

The wiki with the recall and model changes seems like a really cool idea. If I am reading this right I should be OK from 2004 on.

The 4-way flasher is built into the harness that includes the power shield. The '03 non-ABS is the only ST1300 that came without a power shield so it's also the only one that came without 4-way flashers. You can get 4-way flashers by upgrading your shield (power shield is one of the best features on any motorcycle -- do the upgrade) or with an aftermarket turn signal management unit.

I'm shopping for a used ABS ST1300, what changes have occured over the years? Any years better than others, because of a certain change or upgrade that took place? I'm thinking 05 or newer, because warranty would still be valid and maybe extendable. Any thoughts on this. Thanks.

One thing not noted there is that they got a little faster after 2003 and started getting progressively slower in 2005. :D

Will the color wars never end!!??

2005 and later have the "fixes" for the three recalls already in place. Thermostat, not so much. :D

2008 has the added plastic panels on the sides to try to control some heat flow.

2004 and forward all have 'lectric windscreens, 2003 was ABS model only.

Each year has been a different color so you can pick yur favorite.

It ain't about top speed, it's all about the long haul. Get an 1100 and save the difference for farkles. :D

Actually, there are some significant differences I noted immediately when I went from an ST1100 to an ST1300:

The ST1100 has lots "taller" gearing. The ST1100 does ~20MPH/1000RPM; the ST1300 takes a bit more revs for the same (displayed) speed. Mine is just above 3000RPM when the speedo reads 60MPH. I used to feel comfortable riding my ST1100 at 45MPH in 4th gear; the ST1300 seems to be revving a little too high for my tastes, so I tend to shift on up to 5th earlier on the street.
The ST1100 seemed to sit the driver a little further back. I felt like I was leaning forward more on the ST1100, and my legs seem to be bent a little more on the ST1300. Both had/have Corbin seats on them. Could be the handlebar positioning, or a dozen other factors, but I really feel more "crowded" on the ST1300, even riding alone.
ST1100 owners may think of the power windshield as more of a gimmick; something you'll use to set it where you like it, and then leave it there. But I find I use that feature much more than I expected. It's really nice to be able to raise the shield when you run into rain, or find yourself getting sandblasted by the occasional 18-wheeler.Having said all that, both are outstanding road bikes.

Hi. I'm new here and looking for an ST 1300 as a commuter bike. I am curious about the changes in the model years. I did some searching and did not come up with much. Have there been any significant changes in the bike? Thanks for the replies.

The fast answer is no. They made a few minor changes from '03 to '04 and again between '07 and '08 but the bikes are almost identical. We always joke here that the most significant change from one year to the next is the color....so we argue non-stop about which is the fastest color.....

Actually, it has been asked... in fact, found 4 thread and merged them all into this one..

They need to make them faster to compete with the C14 and FJR, so it will have to be BLUE.

They need to make them faster to compete with the C14 and FJR, so it will have to be BLUE.They've only been blue once since 2003, so it may be "that time" again? :)

(Clarification: The ROW (rest of the world) generally gets a choice of colors--only North America is forced to make do with one...)

Given Honda's history with this bike in the U.S., I'd bet on Black, Silver, or some shade of red. There's only been one year of ST of either model that wasn't one of those colors.

They haven't done a bright red (e.g., arrest-me-red) yet, so that's my bet.
