I've been lurking here for awhile as I'm going to pull the plug and either get a used ST1300 or r1150rt. I've read the threads on "should I buy one etc, so I wont ask that again. I've owned honda bikes since 71, (last bike being a 1985 WING) and the ST seems to have less problems to worry about than the RT. BUT this HEAT ISSUE seems to be SCARY. (PS I havent ridden one yet, though I did ride a 2000 ST1100 in cool weather and I have ridden a couple of RT's). How can you enjoy the bike if the Heat is really that bad?
Anyways... has anyone tried something like the baker built air wings????? I thought I saw a thread somewhere mentioning that but I cant seem to find it anymore. Are they available for the ST? Both bikes are excellent with pros and cons for each and I think I would like to stick with Honda but????
Thanks..

Hi,
I pained over buying an ST1300 to replace my ST1100 and almost went to a BMW but man oh man am I 100% happy I didn't.
The ST is one h3ll of a bike and I have 7 buddies with BMW's (3 RT's, 1LT, 2 GS's and an RS) and they all comment and have ridden the ST. 3 others have an 05ST, 05FJR and a V-Strom.
The cost of maintenance and ease of "do it yourself" items on the ST makes it even that much more satisfying.
The heat issue for me has been very rare. I have 48000kms on my 05 and the heat is only ever noticeable when pounding the 400's and Interstates in temps >85.
Mid summer last year I added the fairing deflectors and mirror deflectors and they push enough off my left shin that I don't notice any heat even on the hottest of days. You should know however I almost always ride with my Aerostich pants on even if just over shorts. (See pic)
The choice between the ST any other ride is yours to make but my 05 have never caused me to second guess my decision.

The heat issue seems to be a personal one. My recommendation is to test ride before you buy in a similar climate that you feel you will have the most issues (if possible).
I have an 06 with no regrets and do not have any issues with heat off our ST.

Guess I was wrong about the air wings or I would think more/some people would have them
NightRDR Getting a ride now doesnt help much as it is only 40+ out and wont be up to 80+ for months...
RTETR bike looks good with the fairing trim! Need to get a ride soon on a 1300There are a few 1100's around right now which I might consider but I wasnt too impressed witht the low speed handling of the st1100 I rode. In a straight line on the hiway it was really nice though.

I am very happy with my ST1300. My choice was between theST, FJR1300 and RT. I eliminated the FRJ because of riding position and the RT because of mainenance. I have a friend that just loves his RT and the maintenance is not an issue. For me the heat is really noticeable only on the right side at the ankle.
