I posted this before the site crash of '07 and wanted to re-post
as this is something not many people get to do so when three of our
own - Crazykz (Curt), Birdman (Bill Thweatt) and Maura were selected, it just needed to be announced.
Please visit his Iron Butt page and let's support him any way we can.
Congrats Curt, Bill and Maura - Good Luck!

Hey Curt -
If you can, let us know where the rally checkpoints are, dates, times. I'd love to wtach the guys come and go for an hour or two, maybe take some pics, etc. I'd like to ride to St. Louis to watch the start, (at least I think that's where it starts)
Best of luck with this, I know you've planned for along time!
Eric
I think most of us could donate a tank of gas to Curts chase for the title as a show of support !! Lets not forget to help out one of our own that is doing something most of us will never get the chance to do, and he's also always willing to lend one of us a hand when he can ! Make us proud Curt

What am I missing? I had planned on doing the Newnan, GA SS1000 on April 28. Now I'm not so sure. From what I'm reading in this thread it is going to cost and arm and a leg. The way I figured, the added cost vs. say, a vacation, is the $42 processing fee. My costs are reduced somewhat (maybe $150) because my daughter lives in Newnan and I will have a place to stay the night before and when I return. I will travel about 1500 miles total that weekend which I have done many times. I will travel at my usual interstate speed so no reduced mileage. There will be no motels along the way 'cause I plan to finish before bedtime.

Thanks to everyone for your support. The Waffle jokes are still funny. ;)
It means a lot to me but the whole is experience is humbling. Biting off the IBR is a big chunk to do but I've been thinking about this since I heard about it way back in '85 when I was in high school.
I will try to keep you all posted on the times and days as much as I can. I will apologize ahead of time if I see someone and don't have the time or brain power to talk as I'll be nervous or tired.
Since this is my first IBR it does consume your life for over a year as I found out I got in right after I finished my Coast to Coast ride with Charlie. I'm still waiting for that ride to get approved.
Thanks again to everyone.

As far as Gorham goes - I would not count it out, while it's not a check point I will be suprise if it's not a bouns. But then in 2005 Hyder was not on the bouns list for the first time in many years. I got to go there in 2001 and then over to Miane...that was a very intersting ride.

Curt - the gas cost will not be your biggest issue - needing to stop and sleep for 4 hours - in the north east (can you say New York) will be the high $$ cost. And of course we will not even talk about the gas station food you will be eating. Butt by Dec. you will only be thinking about how you can get into 2009, the cost of 2007 will not even be on your radar.
My real cost is that for every dollar I spend my wife say's she get to spend shopping while I'm out playing and of course she thinks that I spend a lot.

Reynolds Motorsports in Gorham, Maine is usually one of the checkpoints. However this year is different. There is only one checkpoint and it is in St. Louis this time. The start, checkpoint, and the finish are in St. Louis.
If Bill (Birdman) is correct, and I think he is, then Reynolds will most likely be a bonus at some point on the rally. However it's going to be difficult to let anyone know if it comes up and when people would be showing up. If I can relay a message I'll try to let you know. Just so you know bonuses are an in and out thing. They require you to do a specific thing to get the bonus and record time/date, etc. So no one would really want to chit chat. They will be in and out. Just letting you know ahead of time.
Bonuses are released to the riders only and are not published until after the rally AFAIK.

Curt - Just a FYI - During the rider meeting you will be told not to tell people about the bouns locations during the rally. Lisa/Mike will have them posted after the rally but they do not want a lot of people showing up at a bonus location - this has cause a few problems in pass rallies.
If I understand correctly St. Louis is the only place we know of, and are 'allowed' to go to see the riders? I always thought that there were 2-3 checkpoints across the country too, or are these also only released to the riders and also not in advance?

I have asked what can be released and what can't. I've been told that we can release everything we know at this point but cannot repost it. Typically there are more checkpoints but this year there is only one.
I'm really not sure what if anything I can really say about the rally and I'll also say that I'm probably posting more than anyone has in the past which makes me nervous that I should not be talking about all of this.

People have used StarTrak systems but I don't feel like bothering with something like that. I'll just post from time to time how I'm doing and maybe where I'm headed but I don't know what I can let people know and what I can't so the best policy will probably be just to keep my mouth shut.

Thanks Curt, I will make plans to be in St. Louis (c/w a DRY stop in Moonshine). I would guess that my best bet would be to be there for the start and at that juncture possibly gleam additional info on potential vantage points. You are right about how little info is made public; no matter how much I search I find little current news. Is it because the organizers are trying for a cult status for the IBR or does it have to do with rider safety or simply keeping the riders honest? From my non-objective viewpoint the NASCAR TV station would do themselves and their ratings a favor with IBR type content on Tuesday nights rather than the schlock they hoist on us now.

The problem is really with the perception most of the public has of an event like this. Even other riders have the perception that this is a bunch of maniacs out riding beyond their limits, speeding everywhere, and driving recklessly. It is far from that and to try and explain what goes into to riding an event like this is not something you want to explain to people. I'm all for keeping it low key.

Curt - I have seen nothing that you have posted would be a problem for the IBA. What I have done and will be doing is calling the wife (Tari) with information on what I am doing/done and she creates a e-mail (with her own interpertations - which she is really good at) telling people what is going on. My list is family, co-workers and some others. There is never enough information in any of the mails for someone to really know where I'm at or going to be at, at any given time. Hell most likely I do not even know that.....

You are right, for most people perception is reality, and education helps change perceptions. Uneducated perceptions of the IBR lend themselves to unfair prejudices against our sport in general and some of the disdain cast on us by motorists, for example. I do not think that changing public perceptions should be the IBA's mantra but I do believe that if their activities are perceived in a negative manner that they have a responsibility to their members to help change those perceptions through education. Having said that my hotel room in St. Louis is booked and I will be there in August to educate myself.

04-19-2007, 07:38 PM
Yeah, Bill. I'll probably do the same but since I'm wifeless I will probably be calling a friend or two to let them know what/how I'm doing.
Del, informing the public is a formidable task but I agree about educating them. However you're always going to have those that want to get on a soapbox and broadcast the wrong doings of others in their opinion. I do take the time to explain to some that are willing to listen but for most it's incomprehensible.
Great to see you booked a hotel. We'll see you in August.

Top # 10 items for Multi day rides to add???
# 10 ~~~ Correct windshield... Get it taller than you need so you can keep it lower instead of cranking it up... By keeping it lower,,, the Windshield angle will stay more laid back,,, smoother air,,, FAR quieter,,, better mileage... :)
# 9 ~~~ Heated Grips... Enough said... ;)
# 8 ~~~ Better grips... OR,,, get the grip puppies and thank me later... :-D
# 7 ~~~ Poke about,,, 1,987,234 holes in your front shroud... It will cool your glove boxes down from an oven... Though,,, trying to prepare Meatloaf or cook a Turkey leg straight from a fresh Road kill while you ride will be a far harder task... :chicken:
# 6 ~~~ Better headlights... I am sure you will have about 1,200,867 watts aimed on your ride Jason... :mcrider:
# 5 ~~~ MCL handle bar pullbacks... The farther,,, the better I say...
# 4 ~~~ Wind deflectors... I had the Mirror and the side ones... But,,, I might have tried not getting the mirror ones so as to have more wind allowed near my hands for those really hot days...
# 3 ~~~ Cruise Control... Curt can hook you up on the BESTEST ones as he installed mine...
# 2 ~~~ Better Seat... I liked the Sargent a LOT... But,,, 11,000 miles,,, in 11 days as a minimum??? I might invest on a shade better spot for my brain to rest...
# 1 ~~~ The BESTEST,,, thing to add to make miles cruise by??? MCL Highway wings... They help a TON on hot days getting your feet out of the heat... Also,,, just getting your arse,,, at a change of angle can keep you in the seat,,, instead of complaining,,, about your seat when you stop... :D
Congrats all of you and will follow along with you all!!!:bow1:

thanks for the info, terry. i ordered a laminar lip. combined with the stock shields on my other rides, this has proved to be more than adequate, but then i do like wind across my body. if'n i want a nice, quiet, windless pocket, i take the cage. :D
got the heated grips. cold hands = cold body.
i'll likely get some grip puppies, but need to ride it for a spell first. almost order some the other day, though.
generally, i'm not a fan of poking holes in pipes or plastic, but if it's warranted, i may. we'll see.
putting some phids on and smoking on a hid conversion, but the priority are the phids.
i went ahead and ordered the mcl riser plate and peg lowers even though i don't have a custom seat yet. these have proven necessary on several bikes so i figured what the hell. if i don't need them, i'll offer them up at a reduced price.
not sure what i'll do about the wind just yet. need some miles and those are coming soon.
i sure with the st came with standard cruise control. not sure if i'll install it or not. there are a few reasons for this, but primarily my inability to keep a constant speed using my wrist only is a good indicator of how tired i am. 121K miles on the gs, 45K on the strom, 28K on the rt and my wrist hasn't failed me yet.
the seat's going to be a no-brainer. i see a day-long in my future. my arse demands comfort.
haven't looked at the mcl highway wings, but will take a look.
sure hated missing moonshine this year, but my back put me out of commission for a few days. i won't be able to make the 16th either because i'll be in rhode island riding the in-state ss1k. thanks again for the info. it's all appreciated.

I would imagine four riders on one board to qualify for the IBA rally is pretty good. Maybe the Beemer boards could boast having more, but they also have more rides to choose from. Haven't seen anything on the Wing boards, but I know of at least one entry on a Wing. He is a fellow Cantonian riding an orange '07 Wing.

Thanks Mellow!
My plan was to ride my ST1100, which was 'rally ready' with Ron Major fuel cell, risers, cruise, PIAA 910s, dash shelf, heated grips etc. but that bike did not work out and I traded it in for the 06 ST1300 at the eleventh hour, I had wanted to get all my farkling done before the riding season started in earnest, but nevertheless I am certain I made the right choice in switching STeeds. Since picking up the black beauty May 5, I have gone to Russell in California for the custom seat (awesome comfort , but higher, yikes!) and installed heated grips, powerlet accessory plugs, heli bar risers. I am hoping to install the Ron Smith shelf c/w my GPS mounts, and bring power from the Q harness to the shelf this weekend.
Still uncommitted on a windshield, cruise control and aux fuel tank supplier.
I have tipover bars, but have not installed them. I bought them before anything else because the new bike was blinding me with its sparkling shininess, but now that it is covered in mud and bugs I am a bit more blase about tipping over.
I have PIAA 910 lights but no harness, relay or switch or mounts so I have to figure out what I am going to do there. I also have Hella FF50 lights that I was considering using as fog lights (fork mounted) but I am undecided as to how important they will be.
Thanks to all for their interest and support for the IBA! :06biker:

Hey Maura,
If you need a cell and PIAA brackets check out http://www.blm-accessories.com
He makes a fuel cell that mounts to the pillion pan and also makes mounting brackets that are made for the PIAA 910's. Since Dick Seng was about the only other person that made PIAA 910 brackets I think Bill at BLM is about the only other major bracket maker. Bill's come out through the little hole between the mirror and the fairing. Dick Seng's mounted below the mirrors but you have to cut the plastic on the mirror to mount them.
Hope that helps.

Thanks Curt!
I know Bill and have been talking to him. I will probably go with his bracket. I am planning to ride down to see him, he is approx. 2 hours from me. For the fuel cell I was considering one that mounts on a rack above the passenger seat and retains the seat.

and no refunds either, but we know that going in. i'm getting used to canceling, though. over the past year i've had to cancel a number of rides and events because of work and my dedication to the client. no worries. i'm not planning on dieing anytime soon and work, just like a killer stone or a stubborn butt-nugget... this too shall pass. :)

Hey Russ!!!
It was a good reason to ride about 500 miles to eat!!! Really good food wasn't it!!!:eat1:
Also,,, so many Moonshine shirts I couldn't even count them all!!!
:::::that would be any # over #10 with austin brain power:::::
Just wish I could have visited with you and got to see your bike while you were there by it... I,,, THINK,,, I was looking at yours??? Was it parked over across in the same row as mine???
I show up at this thing,,, and from now on I am going to do the PERFECT thing that Jason did... Go from chair to chair and shake hands with everyone,,, and then you will see who all is there!!!
I was not even coming till about 18 hours before we ate!!! TLC and I had gotten home early from Mackinac Island and Toypro/Dan had poked me in the ribs about riding down... It didn't take a very big poke,,, and TLC was ready for me to leave her alone I think... ;)
Wish we could have visited down there and got to bend your ear about your bike!!!

Thane's last post got me to remembering...
The 2007 Iron Butt Rally will begin in St Louis, MO, on Monday, August 20, 2007 and finish on Friday, August 31, 2007.
Here's to wishing good luck and safe riding to those here on the site that are participating as well as all those others in the rally.

Curt,
Maybe this has been asked and answerd already, but are you planning on doing any web updates or anything on your progress? I know you'll probably be too busy or tired, but if you do, will it be here, or on your site?

There's a special On The Road sub-forum we created Mark (blrfl) did some magic in the background so Curt can text from his phone and those will show up in this forum
http://www.st-owners.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=264
No one can reply as it's a one-way communication from Curt while he's on the road.

Yep. Thanks to Joe and Mark I'll be able to post from the road. We're also going to try Jott also to see if I can relay messages by voicemail. Jott translates voicemail to text and emails it.

Funny, not having met many of the folks here, I never gave much thought to accents. Is Curt's something like a "yaah hey dere, I'm from Wiscaansin" accent?

You need to get a little further north to pick up that accent although I grew up with a friend across the street that had that kind of accent. I never understood where he got it from.

I just got back from the site of the 2007 Iron Butt and the bikes entered are impressive to say the least. Talked to Curt as he was finishing up the final prep work on his ST. Several of us from the St Louis area plan to attend the start of the rally on Monday, the check in next Friday, and possibly the end of the rally early on the 31st. Good luck to all.
