I live in a condo, with a common parking garage. The rules frown on working on your vehicles in the garage. But I just gotta install the new Stebel horn that arrived last week.

So, I put the tools & parts on the little utility cart I keep in the front hall closet, and head down to the garage. I get all the plastic off, get the old horn removed, and get ready to enlarge the hole behind the mirror mount like the thread here said. Reach for the drill case, and OOPS - no 5/16 bit! Rats. I have a 5/16 bit, but it's on my boat, across town on Lake Union. I've got tools spread out, tupperware stacked against the bike. I need to get this DONE. Phooey. Move to Plan B.

Tie wraps. Yesss.

Got a whole package of 10" black nylon tie wraps here, lemme think...yep, that'll work. Figured out a way to hang the horn right where it needed to be, and after a couple of tries came up with a lashing that secures it tightly to the inside of the mirror bracket on the end of the fairing strut.

Pulled the heavy wiring from the battery, put the relay where the stock horn was, secured everything, hooked up the fuseholder, popped in a fuse, turned the key on, and hit the button...

HOOOOLY MOLY THIS THING IS LOUD! Makes the stock horn sound like chipmunk farts. Very European sound, and LOUD!

Stuck all the plastic back on, piled all the tools back on the cart, back up in the elevator, 4 hours. Satisfying project. Next time I ride, I hope I get to try it out on some doofus:cool:

hahahha :) chipmunk farts ... yup that's an accurate description of the old one.

One of my first changes was a stebel air horn. Put one on my VFR prior to the ST. Wouldn't leave home with out one now, just wouldn't do it.

Enjoy,

I can tell from expience you'll be looking for an excuse to use it. That 6th sense is on even more high alert after the Stebel is installed. And you develop a strange itch in the thumb right next to the horn trigger:mrgreen: :-D

+1. I get a little of that out of my system every morning giving it a little toot as part of my pre-ride checkout. But yeah, even after using it to prevent being killed, I find myself grinning a little... Especially if the other driver is observed checking his shorts afterward. :D

When my bike arrived at my house with the new horn installed, Larry pulled right into my garage and honked the new Stebel. Holy $%@#!!! It sounded like 3 cars honking, I had to laugh. I'm gonna want one for my car now.:)

Hi, is it a straight swap for the standard horn or you you need to put in a larger relay?

Sounds like i need to change the standard horn..........

Just wait til you til you come up through the blind spot of a no-signaling-want-to-lane-change-cell-phone-babblin-soccer-Mom and give that that thing a toot. The wide eyed look of the cager is worth a thousand words.

The Stebel Compact Nautilus comes with a relay. You'll need it because the new horn draws way more than the stock horn. Seach Stebel Install and you'll find all kinds of useful information.
